Jesus Predicts the Destruction of the Temple(A)

24 Then (B)Jesus went out and departed from the temple, and His disciples came up to show Him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said to them, “Do you not see all these things? Assuredly, I say to you, (C)not one stone shall be left here upon another, that shall not be thrown down.”

The Signs of the Times and the End of the Age(D)

Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, (E)the disciples came to Him privately, saying, (F)“Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”

And Jesus answered and said to them: (G)“Take heed that no one deceives you. For (H)many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ (I)and will deceive many. And you will hear of (J)wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for [a]all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For (K)nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be (L)famines, [b]pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.

(M)“Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and kill you, and you will be hated by all nations for My name’s sake. 10 And then many will be offended, will betray one another, and will hate one another. 11 Then (N)many false prophets will rise up and (O)deceive many. 12 And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow (P)cold. 13 (Q)But he who endures to the end shall be saved. 14 And this (R)gospel of the kingdom (S)will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.

The Great Tribulation(T)

15 (U)“Therefore when you see the (V)‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (W)(whoever reads, let him understand), 16 “then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. 17 Let him who is on the housetop not go down to take anything out of his house. 18 And let him who is in the field not go back to get his clothes. 19 But (X)woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 And pray that your flight may not be in winter or on the Sabbath. 21 For (Y)then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been since the beginning of the world until this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And unless those days were shortened, no flesh would be saved; (Z)but for the [c]elect’s sake those days will be shortened.

23 (AA)“Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There!’ do not believe it. 24 For (AB)false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, (AC)if possible, even the elect. 25 See, I have told you beforehand.

26 “Therefore if they say to you, ‘Look, He is in the desert!’ do not go out; or ‘Look, He is in the inner rooms!’ do not believe it. 27 (AD)For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes to the west, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 28 (AE)For wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.

The Coming of the Son of Man(AF)

29 (AG)“Immediately after the tribulation of those days (AH)the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 (AI)Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, (AJ)and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 (AK)And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His [d]elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The Parable of the Fig Tree(AL)

32 “Now learn (AM)this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So you also, when you see all these things, know (AN)that [e]it is near—at the doors! 34 Assuredly, I say to you, (AO)this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take place. 35 (AP)Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

No One Knows the Day or Hour(AQ)

36 (AR)“But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of [f]heaven, (AS)but My Father only. 37 But as the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 38 (AT)For as in the days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, 39 and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be. 40 (AU)Then two men will be in the field: one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding at the mill: one will be taken and the other left. 42 (AV)Watch therefore, for you do not know what [g]hour your Lord is coming. 43 (AW)But know this, that if the master of the house had known what [h]hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. 44 (AX)Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

The Faithful Servant and the Evil Servant(AY)

45 (AZ)“Who then is a faithful and wise servant, whom his master made ruler over his household, to give them food [i]in due season? 46 (BA)Blessed is that servant whom his master, when he comes, will find so doing. 47 Assuredly, I say to you that (BB)he will make him ruler over all his goods. 48 But if that evil servant says in his heart, ‘My master (BC)is delaying [j]his coming,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow servants, and to eat and drink with the drunkards, 50 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is (BD)not aware of, 51 and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. (BE)There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The Parable of the Wise and Foolish Virgins

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet (BF)the bridegroom. (BG)Now five of them were wise, and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil with them, but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. But while the bridegroom was delayed, (BH)they all slumbered and slept.

“And at midnight (BI)a cry was heard: ‘Behold, the bridegroom [k]is coming; go out to meet him!’ Then all those virgins arose and (BJ)trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise answered, saying, ‘No, lest there should not be enough for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.’ 10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding; and (BK)the door was shut.

11 “Afterward the other virgins came also, saying, (BL)‘Lord, Lord, open to us!’ 12 But he answered and said, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, (BM)I do not know you.’

13 (BN)“Watch therefore, for you (BO)know neither the day nor the hour [l]in which the Son of Man is coming.

The Parable of the Talents(BP)

14 (BQ)“For the kingdom of heaven is (BR)like a man traveling to a far country, who called his own servants and delivered his goods to them. 15 And to one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one, (BS)to each according to his own ability; and immediately he went on a journey. 16 Then he who had received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 17 And likewise he who had received two gained two more also. 18 But he who had received one went and dug in the ground, and hid his lord’s money. 19 After a long time the lord of those servants came and settled accounts with them.

20 “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ 21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were (BT)faithful over a few things, (BU)I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into (BV)the joy of your lord.’ 22 He also who had received two talents came and said, ‘Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ 23 His lord said to him, (BW)‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into (BX)the joy of your lord.’

24 “Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’

26 “But his lord answered and said to him, ‘You (BY)wicked and lazy servant, you knew that I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I have not scattered seed. 27 So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him, and give it to him who has ten talents.

29 (BZ)‘For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the unprofitable servant (CA)into the outer darkness. (CB)There will be weeping and (CC)gnashing of teeth.’

The Son of Man Will Judge the Nations

31 (CD)“When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the [m]holy angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 (CE)All the nations will be gathered before Him, and (CF)He will separate them one from another, as a shepherd divides his sheep from the goats. 33 And He will set the (CG)sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, (CH)inherit the kingdom (CI)prepared for you from the foundation of the world: 35 (CJ)for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; (CK)I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was (CL)naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; (CM)I was in prison and you came to Me.’

37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, (CN)inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

41 “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, (CO)‘Depart from Me, you cursed, (CP)into the everlasting fire prepared for (CQ)the devil and his angels: 42 for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’

44 “Then they also will answer [n]Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, (CR)inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And (CS)these will go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

The Plot to Kill Jesus(CT)

26 Now it came to pass, when Jesus had finished all these sayings, that He said to His disciples, (CU)“You know that after two days is the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered up to be crucified.”

(CV)Then the chief priests, [o]the scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, and (CW)plotted to take Jesus by [p]trickery and kill Him. But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the (CX)people.”

The Anointing at Bethany(CY)

And when Jesus was in (CZ)Bethany at the house of Simon the leper, a woman came to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and she poured it on His head as He sat at the table. (DA)But when His disciples saw it, they were indignant, saying, “Why this waste? For this fragrant oil might have been sold for much and given to the poor.”

10 But when Jesus was aware of it, He said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a good work for Me. 11 (DB)For you have the poor with you always, but (DC)Me you do not have always. 12 For in pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My (DD)burial. 13 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her.”

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(DE)

14 (DF)Then one of the twelve, called (DG)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests 15 and said, (DH)“What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?” And they counted out to him thirty pieces of silver. 16 So from that time he sought opportunity to betray Him.

Jesus Celebrates Passover with His Disciples(DI)

17 (DJ)Now on the first day of the Feast of the Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”

18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, (DK)“My time is at hand; I will keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ”

19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.

20 (DL)When evening had come, He sat down with the twelve. 21 Now as they were eating, He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you will (DM)betray Me.”

22 And they were exceedingly sorrowful, and each of them began to say to Him, “Lord, is it I?”

23 He answered and said, (DN)“He who dipped his hand with Me in the dish will betray Me. 24 The Son of Man indeed goes just (DO)as it is written of Him, but (DP)woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! (DQ)It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”

25 Then Judas, who was betraying Him, answered and said, “Rabbi, is it I?”

He said to him, “You have said it.”

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper(DR)

26 (DS)And as they were eating, (DT)Jesus took bread, [q]blessed and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; (DU)this is My body.”

27 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, (DV)“Drink from it, all of you. 28 For (DW)this is My blood (DX)of the [r]new covenant, which is shed (DY)for many for the [s]remission of sins. 29 But (DZ)I say to you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on (EA)until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom.”

30 (EB)And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(EC)

31 Then Jesus said to them, (ED)“All of you will (EE)be [t]made to stumble because of Me this night, for it is written:

(EF)‘I will strike the Shepherd,
And the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’

32 But after I have been raised, (EG)I will go before you to Galilee.”

33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are [u]made to stumble because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”

34 Jesus said to him, (EH)“Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”

35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”

And so said all the disciples.

The Prayer in the Garden(EI)

36 (EJ)Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples, “Sit here while I go and pray over there.” 37 And He took with Him Peter and (EK)the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed. 38 Then He said to them, (EL)“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and (EM)prayed, saying, (EN)“O My Father, if it is possible, (EO)let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, (EP)not as I will, but as You will.

40 Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, “What! Could you not watch with Me one hour? 41 (EQ)Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. (ER)The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 Again, a second time, He went away and prayed, saying, “O My Father, [v]if this cup cannot pass away from Me unless I drink it, Your will be done.” 43 And He came and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy.

44 So He left them, went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. 45 Then He came to His disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour [w]is at hand, and the Son of Man is being (ES)betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going. See, My betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(ET)

47 And (EU)while He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, with a great multitude with swords and clubs, came from the chief priests and elders of the people.

48 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him.” 49 Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” (EV)and kissed Him.

50 But Jesus said to him, (EW)“Friend, why have you come?”

Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him. 51 And suddenly, (EX)one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear.

52 But Jesus said to him, “Put your sword in its place, (EY)for all who take the sword will [x]perish by the sword. 53 Or do you think that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with (EZ)more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then could the Scriptures be fulfilled, (FA)that it must happen thus?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Have you come out, as against a robber, with swords and clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in the temple, and you did not seize Me. 56 But all this was done that the (FB)Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.”

Then (FC)all the disciples forsook Him and fled.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(FD)

57 (FE)And those who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. 58 But (FF)Peter followed Him at a distance to the high priest’s courtyard. And he went in and sat with the servants to see the end.

59 Now the chief priests, [y]the elders, and all the council sought (FG)false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death, 60 [z]but found none. Even though (FH)many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last (FI)two [aa]false witnesses came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, (FJ)‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”

62 (FK)And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 63 But (FL)Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, (FM)“I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”

64 Jesus said to him, It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, (FN)hereafter you will see the Son of Man (FO)sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

65 (FP)Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His (FQ)blasphemy! 66 What do you think?”

They answered and said, (FR)“He is deserving of death.”

67 (FS)Then they spat in His face and beat Him; and (FT)others struck Him with [ab]the palms of their hands, 68 saying, (FU)“Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(FV)

69 (FW)Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”

70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are saying.”

71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!”

73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter, “Surely you also are one of them, for your (FX)speech betrays you.”

74 Then (FY)he began to [ac]curse and [ad]swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, (FZ)“Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” So he went out and wept bitterly.

He Is Risen(A)

24 Now (B)on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, [a]and certain other women with them, came to the tomb (C)bringing the spices which they had prepared. (D)But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. (E)Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. And it happened, as they were [b]greatly perplexed about this, that (F)behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen! (G)Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, saying, ‘The Son of Man must be (H)delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’

And (I)they remembered His words. (J)Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, (K)Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. 11 (L)And their words seemed to them like [c]idle tales, and they did not believe them. 12 (M)But Peter arose and ran to the tomb; and stooping down, he saw the linen cloths [d]lying by themselves; and he departed, marveling to himself at what had happened.

The Road to Emmaus(N)

13 (O)Now behold, two of them were traveling that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was [e]seven miles from Jerusalem. 14 And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15 So it was, while they conversed and reasoned, that (P)Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. 16 But (Q)their eyes were restrained, so that they did not know Him.

17 And He said to them, “What kind of conversation is this that you have with one another as you [f]walk and are sad?”

18 Then the one (R)whose name was Cleopas answered and said to Him, “Are You the only stranger in Jerusalem, and have You not known the things which happened there in these days?”

19 And He said to them, “What things?”

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, (S)who was a Prophet (T)mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20 (U)and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered Him to be condemned to death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping (V)that it was He who was going to redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, today is the third day since these things happened. 22 Yes, and (W)certain women of our company, who arrived at the tomb early, astonished us. 23 When they did not find His body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 And (X)certain of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but Him they did not see.”

25 Then He said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 (Y)Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His (Z)glory?” 27 And beginning at (AA)Moses and (AB)all the Prophets, He [g]expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

The Disciples’ Eyes Opened

28 Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and (AC)He [h]indicated that He would have gone farther. 29 But (AD)they constrained Him, saying, (AE)“Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.” And He went in to stay with them.

30 Now it came to pass, as (AF)He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight.

32 And they said to one another, “Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us on the road, and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” 33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, “The Lord is risen indeed, and (AG)has appeared to Simon!” 35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was [i]known to them in the breaking of bread.

Jesus Appears to His Disciples(AH)

36 (AI)Now as they said these things, Jesus Himself stood in the midst of them, and said to them, “Peace to you.” 37 But they were terrified and frightened, and supposed they had seen (AJ)a spirit. 38 And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Behold My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. (AK)Handle Me and see, for a (AL)spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see I have.”

40 [j]When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41 But while they still did not believe (AM)for joy, and marveled, He said to them, (AN)“Have you any food here?” 42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish [k]and some honeycomb. 43 (AO)And He took it and ate in their presence.

The Scriptures Opened

44 Then He said to them, (AP)“These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.” 45 And (AQ)He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

46 Then He said to them, (AR)“Thus it is written, [l]and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, 47 and that repentance and (AS)remission of sins should be preached in His name (AT)to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 And (AU)you are witnesses of these things. 49 (AV)Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city [m]of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

The Ascension(AW)

50 And He led them out (AX)as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 (AY)Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. 52 (AZ)And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually (BA)in the temple [n]praising and blessing God.
