A Warning Against Hypocrisy(A)(B)
23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law(C) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(D)
5 “Everything they do is done for people to see:(E) They make their phylacteries[a](F) wide and the tassels on their garments(G) long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(H) 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(I)
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(J) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(K) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(L)
Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees
13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(M) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(N) [14] [b]
15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(O) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(P) as you are.
16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(Q) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(R) 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?(S) 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?(T) 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells(U) in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.(V)
23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth(W) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.(X) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides!(Y) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish,(Z) but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.(AA) 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(AB) which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets(AC) and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30 And you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets.(AD) 32 Go ahead, then, and complete(AE) what your ancestors started!(AF)
33 “You snakes! You brood of vipers!(AG) How will you escape being condemned to hell?(AH) 34 Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify;(AI) others you will flog in your synagogues(AJ) and pursue from town to town.(AK) 35 And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel(AL) to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah,(AM) whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.(AN) 36 Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.(AO)
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you,(AP) how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings,(AQ) and you were not willing. 38 Look, your house is left to you desolate.(AR) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’[c]”(AS)

4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
5 But all their works they do for to be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their garments,
6 And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues,
7 And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.
8 But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.
9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.
11 But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.
13 But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.
14 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.
15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.
16 Woe unto you, ye blind guides, which say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!
17 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold?
18 And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever sweareth by the gift that is upon it, he is guilty.
19 Ye fools and blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift?
20 Whoso therefore shall swear by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things thereon.
21 And whoso shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth therein.
22 And he that shall swear by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon.
23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.
24 Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat, and swallow a camel.
25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside of them may be clean also.
27 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.
28 Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
29 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,
30 And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets.
32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.
33 Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?
34 Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them ye shall kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute them from city to city:
35 That upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the temple and the altar.
36 Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
37 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!
38 Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.
39 For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Jesús denuncia a los fariseos y a los maestros de la ley(A)
23 Después de esto, Jesús dijo a la gente y a sus discípulos: 2 «Los maestros de la ley y los fariseos enseñan con la autoridad que viene de Moisés. 3 Por lo tanto, obedézcanlos ustedes y hagan todo lo que les digan; pero no sigan su ejemplo, porque ellos dicen una cosa y hacen otra. 4 Atan cargas tan pesadas que es imposible soportarlas, y las echan sobre los hombros de los demás, mientras que ellos mismos no quieren tocarlas ni siquiera con un dedo. 5 Todo lo hacen para que la gente los vea. Les gusta llevar en la frente y en los brazos porciones de las Escrituras escritas en anchas tiras, y ponerse ropas con grandes borlas. 6 Quieren tener los mejores lugares en las comidas y los asientos de honor en las sinagogas, 7 y desean que la gente los salude con todo respeto en la calle y que los llame maestros.
8 »Pero ustedes no deben pretender que la gente los llame maestros, porque todos ustedes son hermanos y tienen solamente un Maestro. 9 Y no llamen ustedes padre a nadie en la tierra, porque tienen solamente un Padre: el que está en el cielo. 10 Ni deben pretender que los llamen guías, porque Cristo es su único Guía. 11 El más grande entre ustedes debe servir a los demás. 12 Porque el que a sí mismo se engrandece, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será engrandecido.
13 »¡Ay de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas!, que cierran la puerta del reino de los cielos para que otros no entren. Y ni ustedes mismos entran, ni dejan entrar a los que quieren hacerlo.
15 »¡Ay de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas!, que recorren tierra y mar para ganar un adepto, y cuando lo han logrado, hacen de él una persona dos veces más merecedora del infierno que ustedes mismos.
16 »¡Ay de ustedes, guías ciegos!, que dicen: “Quien hace una promesa jurando por el templo, no se compromete a nada; pero si jura por el oro del templo, entonces sí queda comprometido.” 17 ¡Tontos y ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante: el oro, o el templo por cuya causa el oro queda consagrado? 18 También dicen ustedes: “Quien hace una promesa jurando por el altar, no se compromete a nada; pero si jura por la ofrenda que está sobre el altar, entonces sí queda comprometido.” 19 ¡Ciegos! ¿Qué es más importante: la ofrenda, o el altar por cuya causa la ofrenda queda consagrada? 20 El que jura por el altar, no está jurando solamente por el altar, sino también por todo lo que hay encima; 21 y el que jura por el templo, no está jurando solamente por el templo, sino también por Dios, que vive allí. 22 Y el que jura por el cielo, está jurando por el trono de Dios, y a la vez por Dios, que se sienta en él.
23 »¡Ay de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas!, que separan para Dios la décima parte de la menta, del anís y del comino, pero no hacen caso de las enseñanzas más importantes de la ley, que son la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad. Esto es lo que deben hacer, sin dejar de hacer lo otro. 24 ¡Ustedes, guías ciegos, cuelan el mosquito, pero se tragan el camello!
25 »¡Ay de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas!, que limpian por fuera el vaso y el plato, pero no les importa llenarlos con el robo y la avaricia. 26 ¡Fariseo ciego: primero limpia por dentro el vaso, y así quedará limpio también por fuera!
27 »¡Ay de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas!, que son como sepulcros blanqueados, bien arreglados por fuera, pero llenos por dentro de huesos de muertos y de toda clase de impureza. 28 Así son ustedes: por fuera aparentan ser gente honrada, pero por dentro están llenos de hipocresía y de maldad.
29 »¡Ay de ustedes, maestros de la ley y fariseos, hipócritas!, que construyen los sepulcros de los profetas y adornan los monumentos de los justos, 30 y luego dicen: “Si nosotros hubiéramos vivido en tiempos de nuestros antepasados, no habríamos tomado parte en la muerte de los profetas.” 31 Ya con esto, ustedes mismos reconocen que son descendientes de los que mataron a los profetas. 32 ¡Terminen de hacer, pues, lo que sus antepasados comenzaron!
33 »¡Serpientes! ¡Raza de víboras! ¿Cómo van a escapar del castigo del infierno? 34 Por esto yo les voy a enviar profetas, sabios y maestros. Pero ustedes matarán y crucificarán a algunos de ellos, y a otros los golpearán en las sinagogas y los perseguirán de pueblo en pueblo. 35 Así que sobre ustedes caerá el castigo por toda la sangre inocente que ha sido derramada desde Abel el justo hasta Zacarías, hijo de Berequías, a quien ustedes mataron entre el santuario y el altar. 36 Les aseguro que el castigo por todo esto caerá sobre la gente de hoy.

Jesús denuncia a los escribas y fariseos
23 (A)Entonces Jesús habló a la muchedumbre y a sus discípulos, 2 diciendo: Los escribas y los fariseos(B) se han sentado en la cátedra de Moisés. 3 De modo que haced y observad todo lo que os digan; pero no hagáis conforme a sus obras, porque ellos dicen y no hacen. 4 Atan cargas pesadas(C) y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre las espaldas de los hombres, pero ellos ni con un dedo quieren moverlas. 5 Sino que hacen todas sus obras para ser vistos por los hombres(D); pues ensanchan sus filacterias[a](E) y alargan los flecos de sus mantos(F); 6 aman el lugar de honor en los banquetes(G) y los primeros asientos en las sinagogas, 7 y los saludos respetuosos en las plazas y ser llamados por los hombres Rabí [b](H). 8 Pero vosotros no dejéis(I) que os llamen Rabí(J); porque uno es vuestro Maestro y todos vosotros sois hermanos. 9 Y no llaméis a nadie padre vuestro en la tierra, porque uno es vuestro Padre(K), el que está en los cielos. 10 Ni dejéis que os llamen preceptores[c]; porque uno es vuestro Preceptor, Cristo. 11 Pero el mayor de vosotros será vuestro servidor(L). 12 Y cualquiera que se ensalce, será humillado, y cualquiera que se humille, será ensalzado(M).
Ocho ayes contra los escribas y fariseos
13 Pero, ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas(N)!, porque cerráis el reino de los cielos(O) delante de los hombres, pues ni vosotros entráis, ni dejáis entrar a los que están entrando. 14 [d]¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque devoráis las casas de las viudas(P), aun cuando por pretexto hacéis largas oraciones; por eso recibiréis mayor condenación.
15 ¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque recorréis el mar y la tierra para hacer un prosélito(Q), y cuando llega a serlo, lo hacéis hijo del infierno[e](R) dos veces más que vosotros.
16 ¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos(S)!, que decís: «No es nada el que alguno jure por el templo[f](T); pero el que jura por el oro del templo[g], contrae obligación». 17 ¡Insensatos y ciegos!, porque ¿qué es más importante[h](U): el oro, o el templo[i] que santificó el oro? 18 También decís: «No es nada el que alguno jure por el altar; pero el que jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, contrae obligación». 19 ¡Ciegos!, porque ¿qué es más importante[j](V): la ofrenda, o el altar que santifica la ofrenda? 20 Por eso, el que jura por el altar, jura por él y por todo lo que está sobre él; 21 y el que jura por el templo[k], jura por él y por el que en él habita(W); 22 y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios(X) y por el que está sentado en él.
23 ¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas(Y)!, porque pagáis el diezmo de la menta, del eneldo y del comino, y habéis descuidado los preceptos de más peso de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fidelidad; y estas son las cosas que debíais haber hecho, sin descuidar aquellas. 24 ¡Guías ciegos(Z), que coláis el mosquito y os tragáis el camello!
25 ¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque limpiáis el exterior del vaso y del plato(AA), pero por dentro están llenos de[l] robo y de desenfreno. 26 ¡Fariseo ciego! Limpia primero lo de adentro del vaso y del plato(AB), para que lo de afuera también quede limpio.
27 ¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas(AC)!, porque sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera lucen hermosos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia. 28 Así también vosotros, por fuera parecéis justos a los hombres, pero por dentro estáis llenos de hipocresía y de iniquidad.
29 ¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas(AD)!, porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas y adornáis los monumentos de los justos, 30 y decís: «Si nosotros hubiéramos vivido[m] en los días de nuestros padres, no hubiéramos sido sus cómplices en derramar la sangre de los profetas». 31 Así que dais testimonio en contra de vosotros mismos, que sois hijos[n] de los que asesinaron a los profetas(AE). 32 Llenad, pues[o], la medida de la culpa de vuestros padres. 33 ¡Serpientes! ¡Camada de víboras(AF)! ¿Cómo escaparéis del juicio[p] del infierno[q](AG)? 34 (AH)Por tanto, mirad, yo os envío profetas, sabios y escribas(AI): de ellos, a unos los mataréis y crucificaréis, y a otros los azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas(AJ) y los perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad(AK), 35 para que recaiga[r] sobre vosotros la culpa de toda la sangre justa derramada sobre la tierra, desde la sangre del justo Abel(AL) hasta la sangre de Zacarías, hijo de Berequías(AM), a quien asesinasteis entre el templo[s] y el altar(AN). 36 En verdad os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación(AO).
Lamentación sobre Jerusalén
37 ¡(AP)Jerusalén, Jerusalén, la que mata a los profetas y apedrea a los que son enviados a ella(AQ)! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus pollitos debajo de sus alas(AR), y no quisiste! 38 He aquí, vuestra casa(AS) se os deja desierta[t]. 39 Porque os digo que desde ahora en adelante no me veréis más hasta que digáis: «Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor(AT)».
