Religious Hypocrites Denounced
23 Then(A) Jesus spoke to the crowds and to his disciples:(B) 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses.(C) 3 Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do, because they don’t practice what they teach.(D) 4 They tie up heavy loads that are hard to carry[a] and put them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves aren’t willing to lift a finger to move them.(E) 5 They do everything[b] to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries(F) and lengthen their tassels.[c](G) 6 They love the place of honor at banquets, the front seats in the synagogues,(H) 7 greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by people.
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ because you have one Teacher,[d] and you are all brothers and sisters.(I) 9 Do not call anyone on earth your father, because you have one Father, who is in heaven.(J) 10 You are not to be called instructors either, because you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(K) 12 Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.(L)
13 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you don’t go in, and you don’t allow those entering to go in.[e](M)
15 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to make one convert,(N) and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a child of hell as you are!
16 “Woe to you, blind guides,(O) who say, ‘Whoever takes an oath by the temple, it means nothing. But whoever takes an oath(P) by the gold of the temple is bound by his oath.’[f] 17 Blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctified the gold? 18 Also, ‘Whoever takes an oath by the altar, it means nothing; but whoever takes an oath by the gift that is on it is bound by his oath.’ 19 Blind people![g] For which is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?(Q) 20 Therefore, the one who takes an oath by the altar takes an oath by it and by everything on it. 21 The one who takes an oath by the temple takes an oath by it and by him who dwells(R) in it. 22 And the one who takes an oath by heaven takes an oath by God’s throne(S) and by him who sits on it.(T)
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of[h] mint, dill, and cumin, and yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice,(U) mercy, and faithfulness.[i] These things should have been done without neglecting the others. 24 Blind guides!(V) You strain out a gnat, but gulp down a camel!
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed[j] and self-indulgence.(W) 26 Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup,[k] so that the outside of it[l] may also become clean.
27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs,(X) which appear beautiful on the outside, but inside are full of the bones of the dead and every kind of impurity. 28 In the same way, on the outside you seem righteous to people, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, 30 and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we wouldn’t have taken part with them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ 31 So you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your ancestors’ sins!(Y)
33 “Snakes! Brood of vipers! How can you escape being condemned to hell?[m](Z) 34 This is why I am sending you prophets,(AA) sages, and scribes. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and some of them you will flog in your synagogues(AB) and pursue from town to town. 35 So all the righteous blood shed on the earth will be charged to you,[n] from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah,(AC) son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.(AD) 36 Truly I tell you, all these things will come on this generation.(AE)
Jesus’s Lamenting over Jerusalem
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem,(AF) who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her. How often I wanted to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks[o] under her wings, but you were not willing!(AG) 38 See, your house is left to you desolate.(AH) 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’!”[p](AI)

Jesús acusa a escribas y fariseos(A)
23 Entonces habló Jesús a la gente y a sus discípulos, diciendo:
2 «En la cátedra de Moisés se sientan los escribas y los fariseos. 3 Así que, todo lo que os digan que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; pero no hagáis conforme a sus obras, porque dicen, pero no hacen. 4 Atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; pero ellos ni con un dedo quieren moverlas. 5 Antes bien, hacen todas sus obras para ser vistos por los hombres, pues ensanchan sus filacterias y extienden los flecos de sus mantos; 6 aman los primeros asientos en las cenas, las primeras sillas en las sinagogas, 7 las salutaciones en las plazas y que los hombres los llamen: “Rabí, Rabí”.
8 »Pero vosotros no pretendáis que os llamen “Rabí”, porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo, y todos vosotros sois hermanos. 9 Y no llaméis padre vuestro a nadie en la tierra, porque uno es vuestro Padre, el que está en los cielos. 10 Ni seáis llamados maestros, porque uno es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo. 11 El que es el mayor de vosotros sea vuestro siervo, 12 porque el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido.
13 »Pero ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque cerráis el reino de los cielos delante de los hombres, pues ni entráis vosotros, ni dejáis entrar a los que están entrando.
14 »¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque devoráis las casas de las viudas, y como pretexto hacéis largas oraciones; por esto recibiréis mayor condenación.
15 »¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque recorréis mar y tierra para hacer un prosélito y, cuando lo conseguís, lo hacéis dos veces más hijo del infierno que vosotros.
16 »¡Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos!, que decís: “Si alguien jura por el Templo, no es nada; pero si alguien jura por el oro del Templo, es deudor.” 17 ¡Insensatos y ciegos!, porque ¿cuál es mayor, el oro o el Templo que santifica al oro? 18 También decís: “Si alguien jura por el altar, no es nada; pero si alguien jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, es deudor.” 19 ¡Necios y ciegos!, porque ¿cuál es mayor, la ofrenda o el altar que santifica la ofrenda? 20 El que jura por el altar, jura por él y por todo lo que está sobre él; 21 y el que jura por el Templo, jura por él y por el que lo habita; 22 y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios y por aquel que está sentado en él.
23 »¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque diezmáis la menta, el anís y el comino, y dejáis lo más importante de la Ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fe. Esto era necesario hacer, sin dejar de hacer aquello. 24 ¡Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito y tragáis el camello!
25 »¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque limpiáis lo de fuera del vaso y del plato, pero por dentro estáis llenos de robo y de injusticia. 26 ¡Fariseo ciego!, limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, para que también lo de fuera quede limpio.
27 »¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera, a la verdad, se muestran hermosos, pero por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia. 28 Así también vosotros por fuera, a la verdad, os mostráis justos a los hombres, pero por dentro estáis llenos de hipocresía e iniquidad.
29 »¡Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas y adornáis los monumentos de los justos, 30 y decís: “Si hubiéramos vivido en los días de nuestros padres, no habríamos sido sus cómplices en la sangre de los profetas.” 31 Con esto dais testimonio contra vosotros mismos de que sois hijos de aquellos que mataron a los profetas. 32 ¡Vosotros, pues, colmad la medida de vuestros padres! 33 ¡Serpientes, generación de víboras!, ¿cómo escaparéis de la condenación del infierno? 34 Por tanto, yo os envío profetas, sabios y escribas; de ellos, a unos mataréis y crucificaréis, y a otros azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas y perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad. 35 Así recaerá sobre vosotros toda la sangre justa que se ha derramado sobre la tierra, desde la sangre de Abel, el justo, hasta la sangre de Zacarías hijo de Berequías, a quien matasteis entre el Templo y el altar. 36 De cierto os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación.

37 »¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas y apedreas a los que te son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos como la gallina junta sus polluelos debajo de las alas, pero no quisiste! 38 Vuestra casa os es dejada desierta, 39 pues os digo que desde ahora no volveréis a verme hasta que digáis: “¡Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor!”»

A Warning Against Hypocrisy(A)(B)
23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 “The teachers of the law(C) and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. 3 So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.(D)
5 “Everything they do is done for people to see:(E) They make their phylacteries[a](F) wide and the tassels on their garments(G) long; 6 they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues;(H) 7 they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called ‘Rabbi’ by others.(I)
8 “But you are not to be called ‘Rabbi,’ for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9 And do not call anyone on earth ‘father,’ for you have one Father,(J) and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant.(K) 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.(L)
Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees
13 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites!(M) You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to.(N) [14] [b]
15 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert,(O) and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell(P) as you are.
16 “Woe to you, blind guides!(Q) You say, ‘If anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.’(R) 17 You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred?(S) 18 You also say, ‘If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.’ 19 You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?(T) 20 Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21 And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells(U) in it. 22 And anyone who swears by heaven swears by God’s throne and by the one who sits on it.(V)
23 “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth(W) of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness.(X) You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24 You blind guides!(Y) You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
