The Great Commandment

³⁴^(A)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced ^(B)the Sadducees, they gathered together. ³⁵^(C)And one of them, ^(D)a lawyer, asked him a question ^(E)to test him. ³⁶“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” ³⁷And he said to him, ^(F)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ³⁸This is the great and first commandment. ³⁹And ^(G)a second is like it: ^(H)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ⁴⁰^(I)On these two commandments depend ^(J)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

⁴¹^(K)Now while the Pharisees ^(L)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, ⁴²saying, “What do you think about ^(M)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, ^(N)“The son of David.” ⁴³He said to them, “How is it then that David, ^(O)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

⁴⁴^(P)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

⁴⁵If then David calls him Lord, ^(Q)how is he his son?” ⁴⁶^(R)And no one was able to answer him a word, ^(S)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

23 Then Jesus ^(T)said to the crowds and to his disciples, ²^(U)“The scribes and the Pharisees ^(V)sit on Moses' seat, ³so do and observe whatever they tell you, ^(W)but not the works they do. ^(X)For they preach, but do not practice. ⁴^(Y)They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear,^[a] and lay them on people's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. ⁵^(Z)They do all their deeds ^(AA)to be seen by others. For they make ^(AB)their phylacteries broad and ^(AC)their fringes long, ⁶and they ^(AD)love the place of honor at feasts and ^(AE)the best seats in the synagogues ⁷and ^(AF)greetings in ^(AG)the marketplaces and being called ^(AH)rabbi^[b] by others. ⁸^(AI)But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are ^(AJ)all brothers.^[c] ⁹^(AK)And call no man your father on earth, for ^(AL)you have one Father, who is in heaven. ¹⁰Neither be called instructors, for you have one instructor, ^(AM)the Christ. ¹¹^(AN)The greatest among you shall be your servant. ¹²^(AO)Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
