25 The baptism of John, (A)from where did it come? (B)From heaven or from man?” And they discussed it among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say to us, (C)‘Why then did you not believe him?’

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, (A)the Son of God.[a]

(B)As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,[b]

(C)“Behold, I send my messenger before your face,
    who will prepare your way,
(D)the voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(E)‘Prepare[c] the way of the Lord,
    make his paths straight,’”

(F)John appeared, baptizing in (G)the wilderness and proclaiming (H)a baptism of (I)repentance (J)for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, (K)confessing their sins. Now John was (L)clothed with camel's hair and (M)wore a leather belt around his waist and ate (N)locusts and (O)wild honey. And he preached, saying, (P)“After me comes he who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. (Q)I have baptized you with water, but (R)he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism of Jesus

(S)In those days Jesus (T)came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And when he came up out of the water, immediately he (U)saw (V)the heavens being torn open (W)and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And (X)a voice came from heaven, (Y)“You are my beloved Son;[d] with you I am well pleased.”

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

(A)In those days (B)John the Baptist came preaching in (C)the wilderness of Judea, (D)“Repent, for (E)the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”[a] For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said,

(F)“The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
(G)‘Prepare[b] the way of the Lord;
    make his paths straight.’”

Now John wore (H)a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was (I)locusts and (J)wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, (K)confessing their sins.

But when he saw many of (L)the Pharisees and (M)Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, (N)“You brood of (O)vipers! Who warned you to flee from (P)the wrath to come? Bear fruit (Q)in keeping with repentance. And do not presume to say to yourselves, (R)‘We have Abraham as our father,’ for I tell you, God is able from (S)these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. (T)Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.

11 (U)“I baptize you with water (V)for repentance, but (W)he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you (X)with the Holy Spirit and (Y)fire. 12 His (Z)winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and (AA)gather his wheat into the barn, (AB)but the chaff he will burn with (AC)unquenchable fire.”

  2. Matthew 3:3 Or crying: Prepare in the wilderness

37 Though he had done so many signs before them, they still did not believe in him, 38 (A)so that the word spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:

(B)“Lord, who has believed what he heard from us,
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?”

39 Therefore they (C)could not believe. For again Isaiah said,

40 (D)“He has blinded their eyes
    and (E)hardened their heart,
lest they see with their eyes,
and understand with their heart, and turn,
    and I would heal them.”

41 Isaiah said these things because (F)he saw his glory and (G)spoke of him. 42 Nevertheless, (H)many even of the authorities believed in him, but (I)for fear of the Pharisees they did not (J)confess it, so that they would not be (K)put out of the synagogue; 43 (L)for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

44 How can you believe, when you receive glory from one another and (A)do not seek the glory that comes from (B)the only God? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. There is one who accuses you: Moses, (C)on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe me; for (D)he wrote of me. 47 But (E)if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?”

33 (A)You sent to John, and he has borne witness to the truth. 34 Not that (B)the testimony that I receive is from man, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 He was a burning and (C)shining lamp, and (D)you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light. 36 But (E)the testimony that I have is greater than that of John. For (F)the works that the Father has given me (G)to accomplish, the very works that I am doing, (H)bear witness about me that (I)the Father has sent me.

26 And they came to John and said to him, (A)“Rabbi, he who was with you across the Jordan, (B)to whom you bore witness—look, he is baptizing, and (C)all are going to him.” 27 John answered, (D)“A person cannot receive even one thing (E)unless it is given him (F)from heaven. 28 You yourselves bear me witness, that I said, (G)‘I am not the Christ, but (H)I have been sent before him.’ 29 (I)The one who has the bride is the bridegroom. (J)The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, (K)rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. 30 (L)He must increase, but I must decrease.”[a]

31 (M)He who comes from above (N)is above all. He who is of the earth belongs to the earth and (O)speaks in an earthly way. (P)He who comes from heaven (Q)is above all. 32 (R)He bears witness to what he has seen and heard, (S)yet no one receives his testimony. 33 Whoever receives his testimony (T)sets his seal to this, (U)that God is true. 34 For he whom (V)God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit (W)without measure. 35 (X)The Father loves the Son and (Y)has given all things into his hand. 36 (Z)Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; (AA)whoever does not obey the Son shall not (AB)see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.

  1. John 3:30 Some interpreters hold that the quotation continues through verse 36

25 They asked him, (A)“Then why are you baptizing, if you are neither the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?” 26 John answered them, (B)“I baptize with water, but among you stands one you do not know, 27 even (C)he who comes after me, the strap of whose sandal I am not worthy to untie.” 28 These things took place in Bethany across the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

Behold, the Lamb of God

29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, (D)the Lamb of God, who (E)takes away the sin (F)of the world! 30 This is he of whom I said, (G)‘After me comes a man who ranks before me, because he was before me.’ 31 I myself did not know him, but (H)for this purpose I came baptizing with water, that he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John (I)bore witness: (J)“I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and (K)it remained on him. 33 I myself did not know him, but (L)he who sent me to baptize (M)with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, (N)this is he who baptizes (O)with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son[a] of God.”
