Good News Translation
The Death of John the Baptist(A)
14 At that time Herod, the ruler of Galilee, heard about Jesus. 2 “He is really John the Baptist, who has come back to life,” he told his officials. “That is why he has this power to perform miracles.”
3 (B)For Herod had earlier ordered John's arrest, and he had him tied up and put in prison. He had done this because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife. 4 (C)For some time John the Baptist had told Herod, “It isn't right for you to be married to Herodias!” 5 Herod wanted to kill him, but he was afraid of the Jewish people, because they considered John to be a prophet.
6 On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced in front of the whole group. Herod was so pleased 7 that he promised her, “I swear that I will give you anything you ask for!”
8 At her mother's suggestion she asked him, “Give me here and now the head of John the Baptist on a plate!”
9 The king was sad, but because of the promise he had made in front of all his guests he gave orders that her wish be granted. 10 So he had John beheaded in prison. 11 The head was brought in on a plate and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. 12 John's disciples came, carried away his body, and buried it; then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus Feeds Five Thousand(D)
13 When Jesus heard the news about John, he left there in a boat and went to a lonely place by himself. The people heard about it, and so they left their towns and followed him by land. 14 Jesus got out of the boat, and when he saw the large crowd, his heart was filled with pity for them, and he healed their sick.
15 That evening his disciples came to him and said, “It is already very late, and this is a lonely place. Send the people away and let them go to the villages to buy food for themselves.”
16 “They don't have to leave,” answered Jesus. “You yourselves give them something to eat!”
17 “All we have here are five loaves and two fish,” they replied.
18 “Then bring them here to me,” Jesus said. 19 He ordered the people to sit down on the grass; then he took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. 20 Everyone ate and had enough. Then the disciples took up twelve baskets full of what was left over. 21 The number of men who ate was about five thousand, not counting the women and children.
Jesus Walks on the Water(E)
22 Then Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people away. 23 After sending the people away, he went up a hill by himself to pray. When evening came, Jesus was there alone; 24 and by this time the boat was far out in the lake, tossed about by the waves, because the wind was blowing against it.
25 Between three and six o'clock in the morning Jesus came to the disciples, walking on the water. 26 When they saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. “It's a ghost!” they said, and screamed with fear.
27 Jesus spoke to them at once. “Courage!” he said. “It is I. Don't be afraid!”
28 Then Peter spoke up. “Lord, if it is really you, order me to come out on the water to you.”
29 “Come!” answered Jesus. So Peter got out of the boat and started walking on the water to Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he was afraid and started to sink down in the water. “Save me, Lord!” he cried.
31 At once Jesus reached out and grabbed hold of him and said, “What little faith you have! Why did you doubt?”
32 They both got into the boat, and the wind died down. 33 Then the disciples in the boat worshiped Jesus. “Truly you are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.
Jesus Heals the Sick in Gennesaret(F)
34 They crossed the lake and came to land at Gennesaret, 35 where the people recognized Jesus. So they sent for the sick people in all the surrounding country and brought them to Jesus. 36 They begged him to let the sick at least touch the edge of his cloak; and all who touched it were made well.

Herod's soldiers kill John the Baptist
14 At that time, people told Herod about the things that Jesus was doing.[a] 2 Herod said to his servants, ‘That man Jesus is really John the Baptist. John died but he has become alive again. That is the reason why this man can do these very powerful things.’
3 Before that, Herod had commanded his soldiers, ‘Take hold of John. Tie his hands and feet and put him in prison.’ Herod had done this because of his wife Herodias. Before Herod married her, she was the wife of Herod's brother Philip. 4 John had said to Herod, ‘Herodias was your brother's wife. So it is not right for you to have her as your wife.’[b]
5 Herod wanted to tell his soldiers that they must kill John. But the people thought that John was a prophet from God. So Herod was afraid to kill him.
6 One day, when it was Herod's birthday, he asked people to come to a special meal. The daughter of Herodias danced in front of him and his visitors. Her dance caused Herod to become very happy. 7 He said to the girl, ‘Ask me for anything that you want. I make a strong promise that I will give it to you.’ 8 Herodias suggested to her daughter, ‘Ask Herod to give you John's head.’ So the girl said to Herod, ‘Give me the head of John the Baptist on a plate.’ 9 Then Herod felt sad. But he had made a special promise to the girl, and his visitors had heard him. So he sent his men to do what she had asked for. 10 He said to a soldier, ‘Go to the prison and cut off John's head.’ 11 The soldier did this. Then he brought the head on a plate and he gave it to the girl. The girl took it and gave it to her mother.
12 After this, John's disciples went to the prison. They took away John's body and they buried it. Then they went and they told Jesus what had happened.
Jesus gives food to 5,000 men and their families
13 Jesus heard about what had happened to John. After that, he went away from that place. He sailed in a boat to a quiet place where he could be alone. But the crowd heard where Jesus had gone. So they left their towns and they went on land to the place where he was going. 14 Jesus got out of the boat. He saw a large crowd there on the shore. He felt sorry for them. There were sick people among them and he made them well again.
15 When it was almost evening, Jesus' disciples came to speak to him. They said to him, ‘We are in a place where there are no houses. It will soon be dark. Send the crowd away now, so that they can go to the villages near here. Then they can buy some food for themselves to eat.’
16 Jesus said to them, ‘The people do not need to go away. You should give them some food to eat.’
17 But the disciples said, ‘We only have five loaves of bread and two fish.’
18 ‘Bring the bread and fish here to me,’ Jesus said. 19 Then he said to the large crowd, ‘Sit down on the grass.’ He took the five loaves of bread and the two fish. He looked up to heaven and he thanked God for the bread and the fish. Then he broke the bread into pieces. He gave the pieces of bread to his disciples, and they gave them to the crowd. 20 Then everybody ate. They all had enough food and they were not hungry any more. Then the disciples picked up all the bits of food that people had not eaten. They filled 12 baskets with little bits of bread and fish. 21 About 5,000 men ate the bread and fish. Women and children also ate it with them.[c]
Jesus walks on the water
22 Immediately after this, Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Get in the boat and sail across to the other side of the lake.’ Jesus said that he would first send the crowd away. Then he would also leave. 23 So Jesus sent the crowd away. After they had gone, he went up on a mountain alone to pray. When it became dark, he was still there alone. 24 At this time the boat with the disciples in it was in the middle of the lake. It was a long way from the land. The wind was blowing against the boat and the water was hitting it.
25 Then, when it was nearly dawn, Jesus walked on the water towards his disciples. 26 The disciples saw him walking on the water. They were very frightened. ‘It is a spirit,’ they said. They screamed loudly because they were afraid.
27 But immediately Jesus said to them. ‘Be brave! It is I. Do not be afraid.’
28 Peter replied, ‘Lord, is it really you? If it is you, say to me, “Come here! Walk to me on the water.” ’
29 Jesus said to him, ‘Come to me.’
So Peter got down out of the boat. He walked on the water and he came towards Jesus. 30 But then Peter saw that the wind was still blowing strongly. He became afraid and he began to go down into the water. He shouted to Jesus, ‘Lord, save me!’
31 Immediately, Jesus put out his hand and he took hold of Peter. He said to Peter, ‘You should trust me more than you do. Why did you not believe that I could help you?’
32 Jesus and Peter climbed up into the boat. Then the strong wind stopped. 33 The disciples who were in the boat went down on their knees. They praised Jesus and they said to him, ‘It is true. You are really the Son of God.’
34 They sailed across the lake and reached the shore at a place called Gennesaret.[d]
35 The people who lived in that place recognized Jesus. So they went to tell everyone who lived in places near there. People brought all their sick friends to him. 36 The sick people asked Jesus for help. They wanted to touch only the edge of his coat. Every sick person who touched him became well again.

- 14:1 Herod was the ruler in one of the four parts of Israel at that time.
- 14:4 Herodias had left Philip, her husband. Herod married her. So John told him what Moses had written in the Law. The Law said, ‘A man must not marry his brother's wife while his brother is still alive.’ Herod was not happy with John when he told him that. So Herod sent his men to put John in prison.
- 14:21 Only God could make five loaves of bread and two fish become enough to feed 5,000 men and their families. This showed them that God had caused Jesus to be very powerful.
- 14:34 Gennesaret was a part of the country on the west side of Lake Galilee.

Siya'y ibinangon mula sa kamatayan kaya't nagagawa niya ang mga himalang ito.” 3 Nauna noon ay (B) ipinadakip ni Herodes si Juan. Iginapos niya ito at ibinilanggo dahil kay Herodias, na asawa ng kanyang kapatid na si Felipe.[b] 4 Sapagkat (C) pinagsasabihan siya noon ni Juan, “Labag sa batas na angkinin mo ang babaing iyan.” 5 At kahit nais niyang ipapatay si Juan, natatakot siya sa taong-bayan sapagkat kinikilala nila si Juan na isang propeta. 6 Subalit pagsapit ng kaarawan ni Herodes, sumayaw sa gitna ng mga panauhin ang anak na babae ni Herodias na ikinalugod naman ni Herodes. 7 Kaya't nangako siya at nanumpa na ibibigay niya ang anumang hihingin ng dalaga. 8 Sa sulsol ng kanyang ina ay sinabi ng dalaga, “Ibigay ninyo sa akin ngayon, sa isang pinggan, ang ulo ni Juan na Tagapagbautismo!” 9 Ikinalungkot ito ng hari, subalit dahil sa kanyang binitawang pangako sa harap ng mga panauhin, ipinag-utos niyang ibigay ang kahilingang iyon. 10 Nagpadala siya ng tauhan at pinapugutan ng ulo si Juan sa bilangguan. 11 Dinala ang ulo ni Juan na nakalagay sa isang pinggan at ibinigay sa dalaga, at dinala naman niya ito sa kanyang ina. 12 Dumating ang mga alagad ni Juan, kinuha ang bangkay at inilibing ito. Papuntahin na po ninyo sa mga nayon ang mga tao para makabili sila ng makakain nila.” 16 Sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus, “Hindi na kailangang umalis pa sila; bigyan ninyo sila ng makakain.” 17 At sinabi naman nila sa kanya, “Limang tinapay lang po at dalawang isda ang mayroon tayo rito.” 18 “Dalhin ninyo rito sa akin” ang sabi niya. 19 Pinaupo niya sa damuhan ang napakaraming tao. Nang makuha niya ang limang tinapay at dalawang isda, tumingala siya sa langit at nagpasalamat para sa mga ito. Pinagputul-putol niya ang mga tinapay at ibinigay niya sa mga alagad. Ipinamahagi ito ng mga alagad sa mga tao. 20 Ang lahat ay kumain at nabusog. Pagkatapos ay tinipon ng mga alagad ang mga labis na mga pinagputul-putol na tinapay, at nakapuno sila ng labindalawang kaing. 21 Mga limang libong lalaki, bukod pa sa mga babae at sa mga bata ang mga kumain.

22 Pagkatapos ay agad niyang pinasakay sa bangka ang kanyang mga alagad at pinauna niya sa kabilang pampang, habang pinauuwi niya ang napakaraming tao. 23 Matapos niyang pauwiin ang mga tao, nag-iisang umakyat siya sa bundok upang manalangin. Pagsapit ng gabi, naroroon pa rin siyang nag-iisa. 24 Ngunit nang mga sandaling iyon, ang bangka ay pumapalaot na at hinahampas ng mga alon, sapagkat pasalungat sa kanila ang hangin. 25 Nang madaling-araw na,[c] lumapit sa kanila si Jesus na lumalakad sa ibabaw ng lawa. 26 Nang makita ng mga alagad na lumalakad siya sa ibabaw ng tubig, nasindak sila at nagsabi, “May multo!” At nagsisigaw sila sa takot. 27 Subalit nagsalita kaagad si Jesus, at sinabi sa kanila, “Laksan ninyo ang inyong loob; ako ito. Huwag kayong matakot.” 28 Sumagot sa kanya si Pedro, “Panginoon, kung ikaw po iyan, papuntahin mo ako diyan sa iyo sa ibabaw ng tubig.” 29 Sinabi niya, “Halika.” Kaya't bumaba si Pedro sa bangka at lumakad sa ibabaw ng tubig papalapit kay Jesus. 30 Ngunit nang mapansin ni Pedro[d] ang hangin, natakot siya. At nang siya'y nagsisimula nang lumubog ay sumigaw siya, “Panginoon, iligtas mo ako!” 31 Kaagad iniabot ni Jesus ang kamay niya at hinawakan si Pedro, at sinabihan, “Ikaw na maliit ang pananampalataya! Bakit ka nag-alinlangan?” 32 Nang makasampa na sila sa bangka ay huminto na ang hangin. 33 Sumamba sa kanya ang mga nasa bangka. Sabi nila, “Totoong ikaw ang Anak ng Diyos.”
Pinagaling ang mga Maysakit sa Genesaret(F)
34 Pagdating nila sa kabilang pampang, dumaong sila sa Genesaret. 35 Nang makilala siya ng mga tao sa lugar na iyon, ipinamalita nila ito sa buong lupain at dinala sa kanya ang lahat ng mga maysakit. 36 Nakiusap sila sa kanya na mahawakan nila kahit ang laylayan ng kanyang damit. At lahat ng nakahawak nito ay gumaling.
