The Parable of the Sower

13 On that day Jesus went out of the house and[a] was sitting by the sea.[b] And large crowds gathered close around him, so that he got into a boat to sit down, and all the crowd was standing on the shore. And he spoke many things to them in parables, saying, “Behold, the sower went out to sow, and while he was sowing, some seed[c] fell on the side of the path, and the birds came and[d] devoured it. And other seed fell on the rocky ground, where it did not have much soil, and it sprang up at once because it did not have any depth of soil. But when[e] the sun rose it was scorched, and because it did not have enough root, it withered. And other seed fell among the thorn plants, and the thorn plants came up and choked it. But other seed fell on the good soil and produced grain,[f] this one a hundred times as much and this one sixty and this one thirty. The one who has ears, let him hear!”

The Reason for the Parables

10 And the disciples came up and[g] said to him, “Why[h] do you speak to them in parables?” 11 And he answered and[i] said to them, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to those people it has not been granted. 12 For whoever has, to him more will be given, and he will have an abundance. But whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 13 For this reason I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand, 14 and with reference to them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says,

You will listen carefully[j] and will never understand,
    and you will look closely[k] and will never perceive.
15 For the heart of this people has become dull,
    and with their ears they hear with difficulty,
    and they have shut their eyes,
so that they would not see with their eyes
    and hear with their ears
    and understand with their heart
    and turn, and I would heal them.”[l]

16 But your eyes are blessed because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17 For truly I say to you that many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, and did not see it,[m] and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it![n]

The Parable of the Sower Interpreted

18 “You, therefore, listen to the parable of the sower: 19 When[o] anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it,[p] the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is what was sown on the side of the path. 20 And what was sown on the rocky ground—this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. 21 But he does not have a root in himself, but lasts only a little while,[q] and when[r] affliction or persecution happens because of the word, immediately he falls away. 22 And what was sown into the thorn plants—this is the one who hears the word, and the anxiety of this world[s] and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word and it becomes unproductive. 23 But what was sown on the good soil—this is the one who hears the word and understands it,[t] who indeed bears fruit and produces, this one a hundred times as much, and this one sixty, and this one thirty.”

The Parable of the Weeds Among the Wheat

24 He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while his[u] people were sleeping, his enemy came and sowed darnel[v] in the midst of the wheat and went away. 26 So when the wheat[w] sprouted and yielded grain, then the darnel appeared also. 27 So the slaves of the master of the house came and[x] said to him, ‘Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have darnel?’ 28 And he said to them, ‘An enemy has done this!’ So the slaves said to him, ‘Then do you want us to go and[y] gather them?’ 29 But he said, “No, lest when you[z] gather the darnel you uproot the wheat together with it. 30 Let both grow together until the harvest, and at the season of the harvest I will tell the reapers, “First gather the darnel and tie it into bundles to burn them, but gather the wheat into my storehouse.”’”

The Parable of the Mustard Seed

31 He put before them another parable, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and[aa] sowed in his field. 32 It[ab] is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it is grown it is larger than the garden herbs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the sky come and nest in its branches.”

The Parable of the Yeast

33 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and[ac] put into three measures of wheat flour until the whole batch was leavened.”

Parables Fulfill Prophecy

34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables, and he was saying nothing to them without a parable, 35 in order that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled, who said,

“I will open my mouth in parables;
    I will proclaim what has been hidden since the creation.”[ad][ae]

The Parable of the Weeds Interpreted

36 Then he left the crowds and[af] came into the house, and his disciples came to him saying, “Explain the parable of the darnel in the field to us.” 37 So he answered and[ag] said, “The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man, 38 and the field is the world. And the good seed—these are the sons of the kingdom, but the darnel are the sons of the evil one. 39 And the enemy who sowed them is the devil, and the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Thus just as the darnel is gathered and burned[ah] with fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all the causes of sin and those who do lawless deeds, 42 and throw them into the fiery furnace.[ai] In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth! 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father.[aj] The one who has ears, let him hear!

The Parable of the Treasure Hidden in a Field

44 “The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, that a man found and[ak] concealed, and in his joy he goes and sells everything that he has and buys that field.

The Parable of the Valuable Pearl

45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant searching for fine pearls. 46 And when he[al] found one very valuable pearl, he went and[am] sold everything that he possessed and purchased it.

The Parable of the Dragnet

47 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet that was thrown into the sea and gathered fish[an] of every kind, 48 which when it was filled they pulled to shore and sat down and[ao] collected the good fish[ap] into containers, but the bad they threw out. 49 Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the evil from among the righteous 50 and throw them into the fiery furnace.[aq] In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth!

51 “Have you understood all these things?” They said to him, “Yes.” 52 And he said to them, “For this reason every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of the house who brings out of his storeroom new things and old things.”

Rejected at Nazareth

53 And it happened that when Jesus had finished these parables he went away from there. 54 And he came to his hometown and[ar] began to teach[as] them in their synagogue, so that they were amazed and said, “From where did this man get this wisdom and these miracles? 55 Is not this one the son of the carpenter? Is not his mother called Mary and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? 56 And are not all his sisters with us? From where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not perform many miracles in that place because of their unbelief.

“May isang magsasakang naghasik ng binhi. Sa kanyang paghahasik, may mga binhing nahulog sa tabi ng daan. Dumating ang mga ibon at tinuka ang mga binhing iyon. May mga binhi namang nahulog sa mabatong lugar, kung saan walang gaanong lupa. Mabilis na tumubo ang binhi dahil mababaw ang lupa. Ngunit natuyo rin ito nang masikatan ng araw, at dahil hindi malalim ang ugat, namatay ito. May mga binhi namang nahulog sa lupang may matitinik na damo. Lumago ang mga damo at natakpan ang mga tumubong binhi. Ang iba namaʼy nahulog sa mabuting lupa, lumago at namunga. Ang ibaʼy napakarami ng bunga, ang ibaʼy marami-rami, at ang iba namaʼy katamtaman lang.[a] Kayong mga nakikinig, dapat ninyo itong pag-isipan!”[b]

Ang Layunin ng mga Talinghaga(B)

10 Pagkatapos, lumapit kay Jesus ang mga tagasunod niya at nagtanong, “Bakit po kayo gumagamit ng talinghaga sa pagtuturo sa mga tao?” 11 Sumagot si Jesus, “Ipinagkaloob sa inyo na malaman ang mga lihim tungkol sa paghahari ng Dios,[c] pero hindi ito ipinagkaloob sa iba. 12 Sapagkat ang taong sumusunod sa narinig niyang katotohanan ay bibigyan pa ng higit na pang-unawa. Ngunit ang taong hindi sumusunod sa katotohanan, kahit ang kaunti niyang naunawaan ay kukunin pa sa kanya. 13 Kaya nagsasalita ako sa kanila sa pamamagitan ng talinghaga, dahil tumitingin sila pero hindi nakakakita, at nakikinig pero hindi naman nakakaunawa. 14 Sa kanila natupad ang sinabi noon ni Isaias:

    ‘Makinig man kayo nang makinig, hindi kayo makakaunawa.
    Tumingin man kayo nang tumingin, hindi kayo makakakita.
15 Dahil matigas ang puso ng mga taong ito.
    Tinakpan nila ang kanilang mga tainga,
    at ipinikit ang kanilang mga mata,
    dahil baka makakita sila at makarinig,
    at maunawaan nila kung ano ang tama,
    at magbalik-loob sila sa akin,
    at pagalingin ko sila.’[d]

16 Ngunit mapalad kayo, dahil nakakakita kayo at nakakaunawa. 17 Sinasabi ko sa inyo ang totoo, maraming propeta at matutuwid na tao noon ang naghangad na makakita at makarinig ng nakikita at naririnig ninyo ngayon, pero hindi ito nangyari sa kanilang panahon.”

18 “Pakinggan ninyo ang kahulugan ng talinghaga tungkol sa manghahasik: 19 Ang tabi ng daan, kung saan nahulog ang ilang binhi ay ang mga taong nakinig ng mensahe tungkol sa paghahari ng Dios pero hindi nakaunawa. Dumating si Satanas at inagaw ang salita sa kanilang puso. 20 Ang mabatong lugar, kung saan nahulog ang ibang binhi ay ang mga taong nakinig ng salita ng Dios at masaya itong tinanggap agad. 21 Ngunit hindi taimtim sa puso ang kanilang pagtanggap, kaya hindi tumagal ang kanilang pananampalataya. Pagdating ng kahirapan o pag-uusig dahil sa salita ng Dios na kanilang tinanggap, agad silang tumatalikod sa kanilang pananampalataya. 22 Ang lupang may matitinik na damo, kung saan nahulog ang iba pang binhi ay ang mga taong nakinig ng salita ng Dios. Ngunit dahil sa mga alalahanin dito sa mundo at sa paghahangad na yumaman, nakalimutan nila ang salita ng Dios, kaya hindi namunga ang salita sa buhay nila. 23 Ngunit ang mabuting lupang hinasikan ng binhi ay ang mga taong nakikinig sa salita ng Dios at nakakaunawa nito. Kaya namumunga ito sa kanilang buhay. Ang ibaʼy napakarami ang bunga, ang ibaʼy marami, at ang iba namaʼy katamtaman lang.”[e]

Ang Talinghaga tungkol sa mga Damo sa Triguhan

24 Muling nagbigay ng talinghaga si Jesus sa kanila, “Ang paghahari ng Dios ay maitutulad sa kwentong ito: May isang taong naghasik ng mabuting binhi sa kanyang bukid. 25 Pero kinagabihan, habang natutulog ang mga tao, dumating ang kanyang kaaway at naghasik ng masasamang damo at umalis. 26 Nang tumubo ang mga tanim at namunga, lumitaw din ang masasamang damo. 27 Kaya pumunta sa kanya ang kanyang mga alipin at sinabi, ‘Hindi po ba mabubuting binhi lamang ang inihasik ninyo sa inyong bukid? Paano po ba ito nagkaroon ng masasamang damo?’ 28 Sinabi ng may-ari, ‘Isang kaaway ang may kagagawan nito.’ Tinanong siya ng mga utusan, ‘Gusto po ba ninyong bunutin namin ang masasamang damo?’ 29 Sumagot siya, ‘Huwag, baka mabunot din ninyo pati ang trigo. 30 Hayaan na lang muna ninyong lumagong pareho hanggang sa anihan. Kapag dumating na ang panahong iyon, sasabihin ko sa mga tagapag-ani na unahin muna nilang bunutin ang masasamang damo, at bigkisin para sunugin. Pagkatapos, ipapaani ko sa kanila ang trigo at ipapaimbak sa aking bodega.’ ”

Ang Paghahalintulad sa Buto ng Mustasa(D)

31 Ikinuwento pa sa kanila ni Jesus ang paghahalintulad na ito: “Ang kaharian ng Dios ay katulad ng isang buto ng mustasa[f] na itinanim ng isang tao sa kanyang bukid. 32 Ito ang pinakamaliit sa lahat ng buto. Ngunit kapag tumubo at lumaki na, nagiging mas mataas ito kaysa sa ibang mga halamang gulay, na parang punongkahoy ang taas, at pinupugaran ng mga ibon ang mga sanga nito.”

Ang Paghahalintulad sa Pampaalsa(E)

33 Isa pang paghahalintulad ang ikinuwento ni Jesus: “Ang kaharian ng Dios ay katulad ng pampaalsang inihalo ng babae sa isang malaking planggana ng harina, at napaalsa nito ang buong masa ng harina.”

Ang Paggamit ni Jesus ng mga Paghahalintulad o mga Talinghaga(F)

34 Gumamit si Jesus ng mga paghahalintulad o mga talinghaga sa lahat ng kanyang pangangaral tungkol sa paghahari ng Dios. Hindi siya nangaral sa mga tao nang hindi sa pamamagitan nito. 35 Sa ganitong paraan ay natupad ang sinabi ng Dios sa pamamagitan ng kanyang propeta:

    “Magsasalita ako sa kanila sa pamamagitan ng paghahalintulad.
    Sasabihin ko sa kanila ang mga bagay na nalilihim mula pa nang likhain ang mundo.”[g]

Ang Kahulugan ng Talinghaga tungkol sa mga Damo sa Triguhan

36 Pagkatapos, iniwan ni Jesus ang mga tao at pumasok siya sa isang bahay. Nilapitan siya ng mga tagasunod niya at sinabi, “Pakipaliwanag po sa amin ang talinghaga tungkol sa masasamang damo.” 37 Sumagot si Jesus, “Ang naghasik ng mabuting binhi ay walang iba kundi ako na Anak ng Tao. 38 Ang bukid ay ang mundo, at ang mabuting binhi ay ang mga kabilang sa kaharian ng Dios. Ang masasamang damo naman ay ang mga sakop ni Satanas. 39 Si Satanas ang kaaway na nagtanim sa kanila. Ang anihan ay ang katapusan ng mundo, at ang tagapag-ani ay ang mga anghel. 40 Kung paanong binubunot at sinusunog ang masasamang damo, ganoon din ang mangyayari sa katapusan ng mundo. 41 Ako na Anak ng Tao ay magpapadala ng mga anghel, at aalisin nila sa aking kaharian ang lahat ng gumagawa ng kasalanan at nagiging dahilan ng pagkakasala ng iba. 42 Itatapon sila sa nagliliyab na apoy, at dooʼy iiyak sila at magngangalit ang kanilang ngipin.[h] 43 Pero ang matutuwid ay magniningning na parang araw sa kaharian ng kanilang Ama. Kayong mga nakikinig, dapat ninyo itong pag-isipan!”

Ang Paghahalintulad sa Natatagong Kayamanan

44 Sinabi pa ni Jesus, “Ang kaharian ng Dios ay katulad ng kayamanang nakabaon sa isang bukid. Nang mahukay ito ng isang tao, itinago[i] niya itong muli. At sa tuwa niyaʼy umuwi siya at ipinagbili ang lahat ng kanyang ari-arian, at binili niya ang bukid na iyon.”

Ang Paghahalintulad sa Perlas

45 “Ang kaharian ng Dios ay katulad din nito: May isang negosyante na naghahanap ng magagandang perlas. 46 Nang makatagpo siya ng isang mamahaling perlas, ipinagbili niya ang lahat ng kanyang ari-arian at binili ang perlas na iyon.”

Ang Paghahalintulad sa Lambat

47 “Ang kaharian ng Dios ay katulad din ng isang lambat na inihagis ng mga mangingisda sa lawa at nakahuli ng sari-saring isda. 48 Nang mapuno ang lambat, hinila nila ito papunta sa dalampasigan. Pagkatapos, naupo sila para pagbukud-bukurin ang mga isda. Ang mabubuting isda ay inilagay nila sa mga basket, at ang mga walang kwenta[j] ay itinapon nila. 49 Ganyan din ang mangyayari sa katapusan ng mundo. Darating ang mga anghel at ihihiwalay nila ang masasama sa matutuwid. 50 Itatapon ang masasama sa nagliliyab na apoy, at dooʼy iiyak sila at magngangalit ang kanilang ngipin.”

51 Pagkatapos, tinanong sila ni Jesus, “Naunawaan ba ninyong lahat ang sinabi ko?” Sumagot sila, “Opo.” 52 At sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila, “Kaya nga, ang bawat tagapagturo ng Kautusan na naturuan tungkol sa kaharian ng Dios ay maitutulad sa isang may-ari ng bahay na maraming ari-arian sa bodega niya. Hindi lang ang mga lumang bagay ang kanyang inilalabas sa bodega kundi pati ang mga bago.”[k]

Hindi Tinanggap si Jesus sa Nazaret(G)

53 Pagkatapos mangaral ni Jesus sa pamamagitan ng mga talinghaga ay umalis na siya. 54 Pumunta siya sa sarili niyang bayan at nangaral doon sa kanilang sambahan. Nagtaka sa kanya ang mga kababayan niya. Sinabi nila, “Saan kaya niya nakuha ang karunungang iyan at ang kapangyarihang gumawa ng himala? 55 Hindi baʼt anak siya ng karpintero? Hindi baʼt si Maria ang kanyang ina at ang mga kapatid niya ay sina Santiago, Jose, Simon at Judas? 56 Hindi baʼt ang lahat ng kapatid niyang babae ay dito rin nakatira sa atin? Saan niya nakuha ang ganyang kakayahan?” 57 At hindi nila siya pinaniwalaan. Kaya sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila, “Ang isang propeta ay iginagalang kahit saan, maliban lang sa sarili niyang bayan at pamilya.” 58 Kaya hindi gumawa si Jesus ng maraming himala roon dahil sa kawalan nila ng pananampalataya sa kanya.
