Matthew 11

John the Baptist sends his disciples to Christ, who gives them their answer. He rebukes the unthankful cities, and lovingly exhorts people to take his yoke upon them.
11 And when Jesus had made an end of instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and to preach in their towns.
2 When John, being in prison, heard about the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples 3 and asked him, Are you he that was to come, or should we look for another? 4 Jesus answered and said to them, Go and tell John what you have heard and seen: 5 the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise up again, and the glad tidings are preached to the poor. 6 And blessed is the person who is not offended by me.
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to speak to the people about John: What did you go out into the wilderness to see? Did you go to see a reed shaken with the wind? 8 Or what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. 9 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and more than a prophet. 10 For this is he of whom it is written: Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.
11 Truly I say to you, among the children of women none greater than John the Baptist has arisen. Notwithstanding, he who is less in the kingdom of heaven, is greater than he.
12 From the time of John the Baptist to now, the kingdom of heaven is sorely pressed, and those who go to it with effort seize it for themselves. 13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied with a view to the time of John. 14 And also, if you will receive it, this is Elijah who was to come. 15 He who has ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But to what can I liken this generation? It is like children who sit in the market and call to their fellows, 17 and say, We have piped to you, and you have not danced; we have mourned to you, and you have not sorrowed. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say he has the devil. 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Here is a glutton and drinker of wine, and a friend of publicans and sinners! Nevertheless, wisdom is justified by her children.
20 Then Jesus began to upbraid the places in which most of his miracles had been done, because they did not turn: 21 Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were shown in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I say to you, it will be easier for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment than for you. 23 And you Capernaum, who are lifted up to heaven, shall be brought down to hell. For if the miracles which have been done in you had been shown in Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I say to you, it will be easier for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.
25 At that time Jesus concluded and said, I praise you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and learned, and have revealed them to babes; 26 Even so, Father, for so it pleased you.
27 All things are given to me by my Father. And no one knows the Son but the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and the person to whom the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

2 Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
3 And said unto him, Art thou he that should come, or do we look for another?
4 Jesus answered and said unto them, Go and shew John again those things which ye do hear and see:
5 The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
6 And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.
7 And as they departed, Jesus began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
8 But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? behold, they that wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.
9 But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? yea, I say unto you, and more than a prophet.
10 For this is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.
11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
12 And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force.
13 For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14 And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
15 He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented.
18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil.
19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.
20 Then began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not:
21 Woe unto thee, Chorazin! woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
22 But I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the day of judgment, than for you.
23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
24 But I say unto you, That it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment, than for thee.
25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
26 Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight.
27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

11 Und es geschah, als Jesus die Befehle an seine zwölf Jünger vollendet hatte, zog er von dort weg, um in ihren Städten zu lehren und zu verkündigen.
2 Als aber Johannes im Gefängnis von den Werken des Christus hörte, sandte er zwei seiner Jünger
3 und ließ ihm sagen: Bist du derjenige, der kommen soll[a], oder sollen wir auf einen anderen warten?
4 Und Jesus antwortete und sprach zu ihnen: Geht hin und berichtet dem Johannes, was ihr hört und seht:
5 Blinde werden sehend und Lahme gehen, Aussätzige werden rein und Taube hören, Tote werden auferweckt, und Armen wird das Evangelium verkündigt.
6 Und glückselig ist, wer nicht Anstoß nimmt an mir!
7 Als aber diese unterwegs waren, fing Jesus an, zu der Volksmenge über Johannes zu reden: Was seid ihr in die Wüste hinausgegangen zu sehen? Ein Rohr, das vom Wind bewegt wird?
8 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Menschen, mit weichen Kleidern bekleidet? Siehe, die, welche weiche Kleider tragen, sind in den Häusern der Könige!
9 Oder was seid ihr hinausgegangen zu sehen? Einen Propheten? Ja, ich sage euch: einen, der mehr ist als ein Prophet!
10 Denn dieser ist"s, von dem geschrieben steht: »Siehe, ich sende meinen Boten vor deinem Angesicht her, der deinen Weg vor dir bereiten soll«.[b]
11 Wahrlich, ich sage euch: Unter denen, die von Frauen geboren sind, ist kein Größerer aufgetreten als Johannes der Täufer; doch der Kleinste im Reich der Himmel ist größer als er.
12 Aber von den Tagen Johannes des Täufers an bis jetzt leidet das Reich der Himmel Gewalt, und die, welche Gewalt anwenden, reißen es an sich.
13 Denn alle Propheten und das Gesetz haben geweissagt bis hin zu Johannes.
14 Und wenn ihr es annehmen wollt: Er ist der Elia, der kommen soll.
15 Wer Ohren hat zu hören, der höre!
16 Wem soll ich aber dieses Geschlecht vergleichen? Es ist Kindern gleich, die an den Marktplätzen sitzen und ihren Freunden zurufen
17 und sprechen: Wir haben euch aufgespielt, und ihr habt nicht getanzt; wir haben euch Klagelieder gesungen, und ihr habt nicht geweint!
18 Denn Johannes ist gekommen, der aß nicht und trank nicht; da sagen sie: Er hat einen Dämon!
19 Der Sohn des Menschen ist gekommen, der isst und trinkt; da sagen sie: Wie ist der Mensch ein Fresser und Weinsäufer, ein Freund der Zöllner und Sünder! Und doch ist die Weisheit gerechtfertigt worden von ihren Kindern.
Weheruf über unbußfertige Städte
20 Da fing er an, die Städte zu schelten, in denen die meisten seiner Wundertaten geschehen waren, weil sie nicht Buße getan hatten:
21 Wehe dir, Chorazin! Wehe dir, Bethsaida! Denn wenn in Tyrus und Zidon die Wundertaten geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind, so hätten sie längst in Sack und Asche Buße getan.
22 Doch ich sage euch: Es wird Tyrus und Zidon erträglicher gehen am Tag des Gerichts als euch!
23 Und du, Kapernaum, die du bis zum Himmel erhöht worden bist, du wirst bis zum Totenreich[c] hinabgeworfen werden! Denn wenn in Sodom die Wundertaten geschehen wären, die bei dir geschehen sind, es würde noch heutzutage stehen.
24 Doch ich sage euch: Es wird dem Land Sodom erträglicher gehen am Tag des Gerichts als dir!
Jesus, der Heiland für die Unmündigen und Bedrückten
25 Zu jener Zeit begann Jesus und sprach: Ich preise dich, Vater, Herr des Himmels und der Erde, dass du dies vor den Weisen und Klugen verborgen und es den Unmündigen geoffenbart hast!
26 Ja, Vater, denn so ist es wohlgefällig gewesen vor dir.
27 Alles ist mir von meinem Vater übergeben worden, und niemand erkennt den Sohn als nur der Vater; und niemand erkennt den Vater als nur der Sohn und der, welchem der Sohn es offenbaren will.
28 Kommt her zu mir alle, die ihr mühselig und beladen seid, so will ich euch erquicken[d]!
29 Nehmt auf euch mein Joch[e] und lernt von mir, denn ich bin sanftmütig und von Herzen demütig; so werdet ihr Ruhe finden für eure Seelen!
30 Denn mein Joch ist sanft und meine Last ist leicht.
