Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

“Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L) 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)

16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.

21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)

24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!

26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[b] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(AK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(AL)

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(AM)
36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[c](AN)

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)

Jesús elige y envía a sus apóstoles

10 Jesús llamó a sus doce seguidores y les dio el poder de expulsar los espíritus malignos y de sanar toda clase de enfermedades. Estos son los nombres de los doce apóstoles:

Simón (también llamado Pedro),

su hermano Andrés,

Santiago hijo de Zebedeo,

su hermano Juan,

Felipe,

Bartolomé,

Tomás,

Mateo el cobrador de impuestos,

Santiago, hijo de Alfeo,

Tadeo,

Simón el zelote[a],

Judas Iscariote (que también le entregó).

Jesús envió a los doce y les dio estas instrucciones: «No vayan a la gente que no es judía y tampoco a ningún pueblo donde vivan los samaritanos. En vez de eso, vayan a las ovejas perdidas del pueblo de Israel. Vayan allá y díganles: “El reino de Dios está cerca”. Sanen a los enfermos, resuciten a los muertos, sanen a los leprosos y expulsen demonios. Ustedes han recibido gratuitamente, así que también den gratuitamente. No lleven nada de dinero consigo: ni oro, ni plata, ni cobre. 10 No lleven provisiones para el camino, ni ropa para cambiarse, ni otro par de sandalias, ni un bastón, porque los que trabajan merecen recibir su sustento.

11 »Cuando entren a una ciudad o a un pueblo, busquen a alguien que sea digno de confianza y quédense en su casa hasta que ustedes se vayan. 12 Cuando entren a esa casa, digan: “La paz sea con ustedes”. 13 Si esa familia les da la bienvenida, entonces ellos son dignos de su bendición de paz y esa bendición se quedará con ellos. Pero si la gente de allí no les da la bienvenida, entonces llévense consigo la bendición de paz que les desearon, porque no la merecen. 14 Si en una casa o pueblo no les dan la bienvenida ni los escuchan, salgan de ahí y sacúdanse el polvo de los pies.[b] 15 Les digo la verdad: en el día del juicio le irá mejor a Sodoma y Gomorra que a la gente de ese pueblo.

Jesús hace una advertencia

16 »Tengan en cuenta que los envío como ovejas en medio de lobos. Así que sean astutos como las serpientes, pero sencillos como las palomas. 17 Cuídense de la gente porque los entregarán a las autoridades, los llevarán para juzgarlos y los azotarán en las sinagogas. 18 Los harán presentarse ante gobernadores y reyes por ser mis seguidores. Ustedes serán mis testigos ante ellos y ante los que no son judíos. 19 Cuando los arresten, no se preocupen por lo que van a decir o cómo lo van a decir. En ese momento Dios les dirá lo que han de decir, 20 ya que no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu de su Padre a través de ustedes.

21 »El hermano traicionará y entregará a la muerte al hermano. El papá entregará a la muerte al hijo. Los hijos se pondrán en contra de los padres y los matarán. 22 A ustedes, todos los van a odiar por causa de mi nombre, pero al que se mantenga fiel hasta el final, será salvo. 23 Cuando los persigan en una ciudad, vayan a otra. Porque les digo la verdad: el Hijo del hombre regresará antes de que ustedes terminen su trabajo en las ciudades de Israel.

24 »Un estudiante no es más importante que su maestro, ni un esclavo más importante que su amo. 25 Un estudiante debe estar satisfecho de ser como su maestro. Un esclavo debe estar satisfecho de ser como su amo. Si al jefe del hogar se atrevieron a llamarlo Beelzebú[c], ¿qué no le dirán al resto de la familia?

Témanle a Dios, no a la gente

26 »Así que no tengan miedo de ellos, pues no hay nada escondido que no llegue a descubrirse, ni nada oculto que no llegue a darse a conocer. 27 Lo que les digo en la oscuridad, repítanlo a pleno día; lo que les digo al oído, quiero que lo proclamen desde las azoteas. 28 No les tengan miedo a los que matan el cuerpo pero no el alma. Más bien témanle a Dios que puede destruir tanto el cuerpo como el alma en el infierno. 29 Se compran dos pajaritos con sólo una moneda, pero aun cuando son capturados no dejan de estar bajo el cuidado del Padre de ustedes.[d] 30 Dios les tiene contados a ustedes hasta sus cabellos. 31 Así que no tengan miedo, ustedes valen más que muchos pajaritos.

No se avergüencen de Jesús

32 »Si ante la gente alguien está dispuesto a decir que cree en mí, yo también lo reconoceré ante mi Padre que está en el cielo. 33 Pero al que me niegue ante los demás, yo también lo negaré ante mi Padre que está en el cielo.

Jesús provocará desacuerdos

34 »No crean que he venido para traer paz a la tierra. No he venido para traer paz, sino para traer desacuerdo y para 35 causar divisiones en la familia:

»“El hijo estará en contra de su papá.
    La hija estará en contra de su mamá.
La nuera estará en contra de su suegra.
36     (A)Los enemigos de uno serán sus propios parientes”.[e]

37 »El que ama a su papá o a su mamá más que a mí, no le doy el honor de ser mi seguidor. El que ama a su hijo o a su hija más que a mí, tampoco puede ser uno de mis seguidores. 38 El que no acepta la cruz que se le entrega al seguirme, no merece ser de los míos. 39 El que se aferra a su vida, la perderá; pero el que dé su vida por mí, la encontrará.

La recompensa de un seguidor

40 »El que los reciba a ustedes, también me recibe a mí y el que me recibe, recibe al que me envió. 41 El que reciba a un profeta por ser profeta, recibirá la recompensa que Dios da a un profeta. Y el que reciba a un hombre bueno por ser bueno, recibirá la recompensa que Dios da a un hombre bueno. 42 Y el que le dé aunque sea un vaso de agua fresca a uno de mis seguidores menos importantes, por solo el hecho de ser mi seguidor, les digo la verdad: también será recompensado».

Sending Out the Twelve(F)

These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: (G)“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of (H)the Samaritans. (I)But go rather to the (J)lost sheep of the house of Israel. (K)And as you go, preach, saying, (L)‘The kingdom of heaven [c]is at hand.’ Heal the sick, [d]cleanse the lepers, [e]raise the dead, cast out demons. (M)Freely you have received, freely give. (N)Provide neither gold nor silver nor (O)copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; (P)for a worker is worthy of his food.

11 (Q)“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out. 12 And when you go into a household, greet it. 13 (R)If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. (S)But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 (T)And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, (U)shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Assuredly, I say to you, (V)it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!

Persecutions Are Coming(W)

16 (X)“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. (Y)Therefore be wise as serpents and (Z)harmless[f] as doves. 17 But beware of men, for (AA)they will deliver you up to councils and (AB)scourge you in their synagogues. 18 (AC)You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 (AD)But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For (AE)it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 (AF)for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

21 (AG)“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And (AH)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. (AI)But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23 (AJ)When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have (AK)gone through the cities of Israel (AL)before the Son of Man comes.
