Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

“Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L) 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)

16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.

21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)

24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!

26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[b] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(AK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(AL)

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(AM)
36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[c](AN)

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who ·turned against [betrayed] Jesus.

Jesus sent out these twelve men with the following ·order [instructions]: “Don’t go ·to [L on the way/road of] the ·Gentiles [non-Jewish people] or ·to [L enter] any town where the Samaritans live. But go to the ·people of Israel, who are like lost sheep [L lost sheep of the house of Israel]. When you go, ·preach [announce; proclaim] this: ‘The kingdom of heaven is ·near [at hand].’ Heal the sick, raise the dead to life again, ·heal [L cleanse] ·those who have skin diseases [T the lepers; see 8:2], and ·force demons out of people [L cast out demons]. ·I give you these powers freely, so help other people freely [L Freely you have received, freely give]. 11 “When you enter a city or town, ·find [seek out] some ·worthy [honorable; respected] person there and stay in that home until you leave. 12 When you enter that home, ·give it your blessing [L greet it; C typically, “Peace be with you”; see Luke 10:5]. 13 If the ·people there welcome you [L house is worthy], let your peace ·stay there [L come upon it]. But if ·they don’t welcome you [L it is not worthy], ·take back the peace you wished for them [L let your peace return to you]. 14 And if ·a home or town [L anyone] refuses to welcome you or ·listen to you [heed your words/message], leave that ·place [L home or town] and shake its dust off your feet [C in protest and as a warning of judgment]. 15 I tell you the truth, on the judgment day it will be ·better [more bearable/tolerable] for the ·towns [L land] of Sodom and Gomorrah [C evil cities destroyed by God; Gen. 19] than for the people of that town.

Jesus Warns His Apostles(B)

16 “·Listen [L Look; T Behold], I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as ·clever [wise; shrewd; cunning] as ·snakes [serpents] and as ·innocent [harmless] as doves. 17 ·Be careful of [Beware of; Watch out for] people, because they will ·arrest you and take you to court [hand you over to the courts/councils; C local councils associated with Jewish synagogues] and ·whip [flog; scourge] you in their synagogues. 18 ·Because of me [On my account; For my sake] you will be taken to stand before governors and kings, ·and you will tell them and the Gentiles about me [L as a witness/testimony to them and to the Gentiles]. 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about what to say or how to say it. [L For] At that time you will be given the things to say. 20 It will not really be you speaking but the Spirit of your Father speaking ·through [in] you.

21 “Brothers will ·give [betray; hand over] their own brothers to ·be killed [death], and fathers will give their own children to ·be killed [death]. Children will ·fight [rebel; rise up] against their own parents and have them put to death. 22 All people will hate you because ·you follow me [L of my name], but those people who ·keep their faith [endure; stand firm; persevere] until the end will be saved. 23 When you are ·treated badly [persecuted] in one city, ·run [flee] to ·another city [the next]. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes [Dan. 7:13–14].

24 “A ·student [disciple; follower] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his teacher, and a ·servant [slave] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his ·master [lord]. 25 ·A student should be satisfied [L It is enough for a student/disciple/follower] to become like his teacher; ·a servant should be satisfied to become [L and a servant/slave] like his master. Fear God, Not People(C)

26 “So don’t be afraid of those people, because everything that is ·hidden [concealed; covered up] will be ·shown [revealed; uncovered; disclosed]. Everything that is ·secret [hidden] will be made ·known [clear]. 27 I tell you these things in the dark, but I want you to tell them in the ·light [daylight]. What you hear whispered in your ear you should ·shout [proclaim] from the housetops. 28 Don’t be afraid of people, who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. The only one you should fear is the one who can destroy [L both] the soul and the body in ·hell [L Gehenna; 5:22]. 29 Two sparrows are sold [L Are not two sparrows sold…?] for only a penny [C Greek: assarion; a copper coin of very low value], but not even one of them can ·die [L fall to the ground] ·without your Father’s knowing it [or apart from your Father’s will]. 30 God even ·knows [numbers; counts] how many hairs are on your head. 31 So don’t be afraid. 32 “All those who ·stand before others and say they believe in me [L confess/acknowledge me before people], I will ·say before my Father in heaven that they belong to me [L confess/acknowledge them before my Father in heaven]. 33 But all who ·stand before others and say they do not believe in me [L deny/disown me before people] I will ·say before my Father in heaven that they do not belong to me [L also deny/disown them before my Father in heaven].

Divisions Within Households(D)

34 “Don’t ·think [suppose] that I came to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 [L For] I have come ·so that

‘a son will be [L to turn a man] against his father,
    a daughter ·will be against [against] her mother,
a daughter-in-law ·will be against [against] her mother-in-law.
36     A person’s enemies will be members of his own ·family [household; Mic. 7:6].’

Conditions and Rewards of Discipleship(E)

37 “·Those who love [L The one who loves…] their father or mother more than they love me are not worthy ·to be my followers [L of me]. Those who love their son or daughter more than they love me are not worthy ·to be my followers [L of me]. 38 Whoever ·is not willing to carry the [L does not take up his] cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Those who ·try to hold on to [cling to; seek to preserve; L find] their lives will ·give up true life [lose them]. Those who ·give up [lose] their lives for ·me [my sake] will ·hold on to true life [L find them]. 40 Whoever ·accepts [receives; welcomes] you also ·accepts [receives; welcomes] me, and whoever ·accepts [receives; welcomes] me also ·accepts [receives; welcomes] the One who sent me. 41 Whoever ·accepts [receives; welcomes] a prophet ·because he is a prophet [L in the name of a prophet] will receive the ·reward of [same reward as] a prophet. And whoever ·accepts [receives; welcomes] a ·good [righteous; upright] person because that person is ·good [righteous; upright] will receive the ·reward of [same reward as] a ·good [righteous; upright] person. 42 Those who give one of these little ones [even; so much as] a cup of cold water because they are my ·followers [disciples] will ·truly get [L certainly not lose] their reward.”

10 At pinalapit niya sa kaniya ang kaniyang labingdalawang alagad, at binigyan niya sila ng kapamahalaan laban sa mga karumaldumal na espiritu, upang mapalabas nila, at upang kanilang mapagaling ang lahat ng sarisaring sakit at ang lahat ng sarisaring karamdaman.

Ang mga pangalan nga ng labingdalawang apostol ay ito: Ang una'y si Simon na tinatawag na Pedro, at si Andres na kaniyang kapatid; si Santiago na anak ni Zebedeo, at ang kaniyang kapatid na si Juan;

Si Felipe, at si Bartolome; si Tomas, at si Mateo na maniningil ng buwis; si Santiago na anak ni Alfeo at si Tadeo;

Si Simon na Cananeo, at si Judas Iscariote, na siya ring sa kaniya'y nagkanulo.

Ang labingdalawang ito'y sinugo ni Jesus, at sila'y pinagbilinan, na sinasabi, Huwag kayong magsitungo sa alin mang daan ng mga Gentil, at huwag kayong magsipasok sa alin mang bayan ng mga taga Samaria:

Kundi bagkus magsiparoon kayo sa mga tupang nangawaglit sa bahay ni Israel.

At samantalang kayo'y nangaglalakad, ay magsipangaral kayo, na mangagsabi, Ang kaharian ng langit ay malapit na.

Mangagpagaling kayo ng mga may sakit, mangagpabangon kayo ng mga patay, mangaglinis kayo ng mga ketong, mangagpalabas kayo ng mga demonio: tinanggap ninyong walang bayad, ay ibigay ninyong walang bayad.

Huwag kayong mangagbaon ng ginto, kahit pilak, kahit tanso sa inyong mga supot:

10 Kahit supot ng pagkain sa paglalakad, kahit dalawang tunika, kahit mga pangyapak, o tungkod: sapagka't ang manggagawa ay karapatdapat sa kaniyang pagkain.

11 At sa alin mang bayan o nayon na inyong pasukin, siyasatin ninyo kung sino roon ang karapatdapat; at magsitahan kayo roon hanggang sa kayo'y magsialis.

12 At pagpasok ninyo sa bahay, ay batiin ninyo ito.

13 At kung karapatdapat ang bahay, ay dumoon ang inyong kapayapaan: datapuwa't kung hindi karapatdapat, ay mabalik sa inyo ang kapayapaan ninyo.

14 At sinomang hindi tumanggap sa inyo, ni duminig sa inyong mga pananalita, pagalis ninyo sa bahay o bayang yaon, ay ipagpag ninyo ang alabok ng inyong mga paa.

15 Katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo, Higit na mapagpapaumanhinan ang lupa ng Sodoma at ng Gomorra sa araw ng paghuhukom, kay sa bayang yaon.

16 Narito, sinusugo ko kayong gaya ng mga tupa sa gitna ng mga lobo: mangagpakatalino nga kayong gaya ng mga ahas at mangagpakatimtimang gaya ng mga kalapati.

17 Datapuwa't mangagpakaingat kayo sa mga tao: sapagka't kayo'y ibibigay nila sa mga Sanedrin at kayo'y hahampasin sa kanilang mga sinagoga;

18 Oo at kayo'y dadalhin sa harap ng mga gobernador at mga hari dahil sa akin, sa pagpapatotoo sa kanila at sa mga Gentil.

19 Datapuwa't pagka kayo'y ibinigay nila, huwag ninyong ikabalisa kung paano o kung ano ang inyong sasabihin: sapagka't sa oras na yaon ay ipagkakaloob sa inyo ang inyong sasabihin.

20 Sapagka't hindi kayo ang mangagsasalita, kundi ang Espiritu ng inyong Ama ang sa inyo'y magsasalita.

21 At ibibigay ng kapatid ang kapatid sa kamatayan, at ng ama ang kaniyang anak: at mangaghihimagsik ang mga anak laban sa kanilang mga magulang, at sila'y ipapapatay.

22 At kayo'y kapopootan ng lahat ng mga tao dahil sa aking pangalan: datapuwa't ang magtitiis hanggang sa wakas, ay siyang maliligtas.

23 Datapuwa't pagka kayo'y pinagusig nila sa isang bayang ito, ay magsitakas kayo tungo sa kasunod na bayan: sapagka't sa katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo, Hindi ninyo matatapos libutin ang mga bayan ng Israel, hanggang sa pumarito ang Anak ng tao.

24 Hindi mataas ang alagad sa kaniyang guro, ni hindi rin mataas ang alila sa kaniyang panginoon.

25 Sukat na sa alagad ang maging katulad ng kaniyang guro, at sa alila ang maging katulad ng kaniyang panginoon. Kung pinanganlan nilang Beelzebub ang panginoon ng sangbahayan, gaano pa kaya ang mga kasangbahay niya!

26 Huwag nga ninyo silang katakutan: sapagka't walang bagay na natatakpan, na hindi mahahayag; at natatago na hindi malalaman.

27 Ang sinasabi ko sa inyo sa kadiliman, ay sabihin ninyo sa kaliwanagan; at ang narinig ninyo sa bulong, ay inyong ipagsigawan sa mga bubungan.

28 At huwag kayong mangatakot sa mga nagsisipatay ng katawan, datapuwa't hindi nangakakapatay sa kaluluwa: kundi bagkus ang katakutan ninyo'y yaong makapupuksa sa kaluluwa at sa katawan sa impierno.

29 Hindi baga ipinagbibili ng isang beles ang dalawang maya? at kahit isa sa kanila'y hindi mahuhulog sa lupa kung hindi pahintulot ng inyong Ama:

30 Datapuwa't maging ang mga buhok ng inyong ulo ay pawang bilang na lahat.

31 Huwag nga kayong mangatakot: kayo'y lalong mahalaga kay sa maraming maya.

32 Kaya't ang bawa't kumikilala sa akin sa harap ng mga tao, ay kikilalanin ko naman siya sa harap ng aking Ama na nasa langit.

33 Datapuwa't sinomang sa aki'y magkaila sa harap ng mga tao, ay ikakaila ko naman siya sa harap ng aking Ama na nasa langit.

34 Huwag ninyong isiping ako'y naparito upang magdala ng kapayapaan sa lupa: hindi ako naparito upang magdala ng kapayapaan, kundi tabak.

35 Sapagka't ako'y naparito upang papagalitin ang lalake laban sa kaniyang ama, at ang anak na babae laban sa kaniyang ina, at ang manugang na babae laban sa kaniyang biyanang babae:

36 At ang magiging kaaway ng tao ay ang kaniya ring sariling kasangbahay.

37 Ang umiibig sa ama o sa ina ng higit kay sa akin ay hindi karapatdapat sa akin; at ang umiibig sa anak na lalake o anak na babae ng higit kay sa akin ay hindi karapatdapat sa akin.

38 At ang hindi nagpapasan ng kaniyang krus at sumusunod sa akin, ay hindi karapatdapat sa akin.

39 Ang nakasusumpong ng kaniyang buhay ay mawawalan nito; at ang mawalan ng buhay dahil sa akin ay makasusumpong niyaon.

40 Ang tumatanggap sa inyo ay ako ang tinatanggap, at ang tumatanggap sa akin ay tinatanggap ang nagsugo sa akin.

41 Ang tumatanggap sa isang propeta dahil sa pangalan ng propeta ay tatanggap ng ganti ng isang propeta: at ang tumatanggap sa isang taong matuwid dahil sa pangalan ng isang taong matuwid ay tatanggap ng ganti ng isang taong matuwid.

42 At sinomang magpainom sa isa sa maliliit na ito ng kahit isang sarong tubig na malamig, dahil sa pangalang alagad, katotohanang sinasabi ko sa inyo na hindi mawawala ang ganti sa kaniya.

The Twelve Apostles(A)

10 And (B)when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, (C)who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and [a]Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; (D)Simon the [b]Cananite, and Judas (E)Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

Sending Out the Twelve(F)

These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: (G)“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of (H)the Samaritans. (I)But go rather to the (J)lost sheep of the house of Israel. (K)And as you go, preach, saying, (L)‘The kingdom of heaven [c]is at hand.’ Heal the sick, [d]cleanse the lepers, [e]raise the dead, cast out demons. (M)Freely you have received, freely give. (N)Provide neither gold nor silver nor (O)copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; (P)for a worker is worthy of his food.

11 (Q)“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out. 12 And when you go into a household, greet it. 13 (R)If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. (S)But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 (T)And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, (U)shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Assuredly, I say to you, (V)it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!

Persecutions Are Coming(W)

16 (X)“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. (Y)Therefore be wise as serpents and (Z)harmless[f] as doves. 17 But beware of men, for (AA)they will deliver you up to councils and (AB)scourge you in their synagogues. 18 (AC)You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 (AD)But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For (AE)it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 (AF)for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

21 (AG)“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And (AH)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. (AI)But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23 (AJ)When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have (AK)gone through the cities of Israel (AL)before the Son of Man comes.

Jesus Teaches the Fear of God(AP)

Christ Brings Division(AZ)

34 (BA)“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 (BJ)And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”
