The Twelve Apostles
10 (A)And he called to him his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every affliction. 2 (B)The names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, (C)who is called Peter, and (D)Andrew his brother; (E)James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and (F)Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;[a] 4 Simon the Zealot,[b] and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles
5 (G)These twelve Jesus sent out, instructing them, “Go nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no town of (H)the Samaritans, 6 (I)but go rather to (J)the lost sheep of (K)the house of Israel. 7 And proclaim as you go, saying, (L)‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’[c] 8 (M)Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers,[d] cast out demons. (N)You received without paying; give without pay. 9 (O)Acquire no gold or silver or copper for your belts, 10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics[e] or sandals or a staff, for (P)the laborer deserves his food. 11 And whatever town or village you enter, find out who is worthy in it and stay there until you depart. 12 As you enter the house, (Q)greet it. 13 And if the house is (R)worthy, let (S)your peace come upon it, but if it is not worthy, let (T)your peace return to you. 14 And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, (U)shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town. 15 Truly, I say to you, (V)it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for (W)the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.
Persecution Will Come
16 (X)“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be (Y)wise as serpents and (Z)innocent as doves. 17 Beware of men, for (AA)they will deliver you over to courts and flog you (AB)in their synagogues, 18 (AC)and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, (AD)to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. 19 (AE)When (AF)they deliver you over, (AG)do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for (AH)what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. 20 (AI)For it is not you who speak, but (AJ)the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. 21 (AK)Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, 22 (AL)and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. (AM)But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they (AN)persecute you in one town, (AO)flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel (AP)before the Son of Man comes.
24 (AQ)“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant[f] above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master. (AR)If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign[g] those of his household.
Have No Fear
26 “So have no fear of them, (AS)for nothing is covered that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 What I tell you in the dark, say in the light, and what you hear whispered, proclaim on (AT)the housetops. 28 And (AU)do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him (AV)who can destroy both soul and body in hell.[h] 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?[i] And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30 But (AW)even the hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Fear not, therefore; (AX)you are of more value than many sparrows. 32 (AY)So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33 but (AZ)whoever denies me before men, (BA)I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
Not Peace, but a Sword
34 (BB)“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. (BC)I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 (BD)For I have come (BE)to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 (BF)And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 (BG)Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And (BH)whoever does not take his cross and (BI)follow me is not worthy of me. 39 (BJ)Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Rewards
40 (BK)“Whoever receives you receives me, and (BL)whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 (BM)The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And (BN)whoever gives one of (BO)these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.”

10 (A)Poi, chiamati a sé i suoi dodici discepoli, diede loro il potere di scacciare gli spiriti immondi e di guarire qualunque malattia e qualunque infermità.
2 I nomi dei dodici apostoli sono questi: il primo, Simone detto Pietro, e Andrea suo fratello; Giacomo di Zebedeo e Giovanni suo fratello; 3 Filippo e Bartolomeo; Tommaso e Matteo il pubblicano; Giacomo d’Alfeo e Taddeo[a]; 4 Simone lo Zelota[b] e Giuda l’Iscariota[c], quello stesso che poi lo tradì.
5 Questi sono i dodici che Gesù mandò, dando loro queste istruzioni: «Non andate tra i pagani e non entrate in nessuna città dei Samaritani, 6 ma andate piuttosto verso le pecore perdute della casa d’Israele. 7 Andando, predicate e dite: “Il regno dei cieli è vicino”. 8 Guarite gli ammalati, risuscitate i morti[d], purificate i lebbrosi, scacciate i demòni; gratuitamente avete ricevuto, gratuitamente date. 9 Non provvedetevi d’oro, né d’argento, né di rame nelle vostre cinture, 10 né di sacca da viaggio, né di due tuniche, né di calzari, né di bastone, perché l’operaio è degno del suo nutrimento.
11 In qualunque città o villaggio sarete entrati, informatevi se vi sia qualcuno degno, e lì rimanete finché partirete. 12 Quando entrerete nella casa, salutatela[e]. 13 Se quella casa ne è degna, venga la vostra pace su di essa; se invece non ne è degna, la vostra pace torni a voi. 14 Se qualcuno non vi riceve né ascolta le vostre parole, uscendo da quella casa o da quella città, scuotete la polvere dai vostri piedi. 15 In verità vi dico che, nel giorno del giudizio, la sorte del paese di Sodoma e Gomorra sarà più tollerabile di quella di tale città.
Le persecuzioni imminenti
16 (B)«Ecco, io vi mando come pecore in mezzo ai lupi; siate dunque prudenti come i serpenti e semplici come le colombe. 17 Guardatevi dagli uomini; perché vi metteranno in mano ai tribunali e vi flagelleranno nelle loro sinagoghe; 18 e sarete condotti davanti a governatori e re per causa mia, per servire di testimonianza davanti a loro e ai pagani. 19 Ma quando vi metteranno nelle loro mani, non preoccupatevi di come parlerete o di quello che dovrete dire; perché in quel momento stesso vi sarà dato ciò che dovrete dire. 20 Poiché non siete voi che parlate, ma è lo Spirito del Padre vostro che parla in voi.
21 Il fratello darà il fratello a morte, e il padre il figlio; i figli insorgeranno contro i genitori e li faranno morire. 22 Sarete odiati da tutti a causa del mio nome; ma chi avrà perseverato sino alla fine sarà salvato. 23 Quando vi perseguiteranno in una città, fuggite in un’altra; perché io vi dico in verità che non avrete finito di percorrere le città d’Israele, prima che il Figlio dell’uomo sia venuto.
24 Un discepolo non è superiore al maestro, né un servo superiore al suo signore. 25 Basti al discepolo essere come il suo maestro e al servo essere come il suo signore. Se hanno chiamato Belzebù[f] il padrone, quanto più chiameranno così quelli di casa sua! 26 Non li temete dunque; perché non c’è niente di nascosto che non debba essere scoperto, né di occulto che non debba essere conosciuto. 27 Quello che io vi dico nelle tenebre, ditelo nella luce; e quello che udite dettovi all’orecchio, predicatelo sui tetti. 28 E non temete coloro che uccidono il corpo, ma non possono uccidere l’anima; temete piuttosto colui che può far perire l’anima e il corpo nella geenna. 29 Due passeri non si vendono per un soldo[g]? Eppure non ne cade uno solo in terra senza il volere del Padre vostro. 30 Quanto a voi, perfino i capelli del vostro capo sono tutti contati. 31 Non temete dunque; voi valete più di molti passeri.
32 Chi dunque mi riconoscerà davanti agli uomini, anch’io riconoscerò lui davanti al Padre mio che è nei cieli. 33 Ma chiunque mi rinnegherà davanti agli uomini, anch’io rinnegherò lui davanti al Padre mio che è nei cieli.
34 Non pensate che io sia venuto a mettere pace sulla terra; non sono venuto a metter pace, ma spada. 35 Perché sono venuto a mettere l’uomo contro suo padre, la figlia contro sua madre e la nuora contro sua suocera; 36 e i nemici dell’uomo saranno quelli stessi di casa sua[h]. 37 Chi ama padre o madre più di me, non è degno di me; e chi ama figlio o figlia più di me, non è degno di me. 38 Chi non prende la sua croce e non viene dietro a me, non è degno di me. 39 Chi avrà trovato la sua vita la perderà; e chi avrà perduto la sua vita per causa mia, la troverà.
40 (C)«Chi riceve voi, riceve me; e chi riceve me, riceve colui che mi ha mandato. 41 Chi riceve un profeta perché è un[i] profeta, riceverà premio di profeta; e chi riceve un giusto perché è un[j] giusto, riceverà premio di giusto. 42 E chi avrà dato da bere anche un solo bicchiere d’acqua fresca a uno di questi piccoli, perché è un[k] discepolo, io vi dico in verità che non perderà affatto il suo premio».

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[b] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(AK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(AL)
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
