Matthew 10

10 1-4 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to expel evil spirits and heal all kinds of disease and infirmity. The names of the twelve apostles were: First, Simon, called Peter, with his brother Andrew; James, and his brother John, sons of Zebedee; Philip and Bartholomew, Thomas, and Matthew the tax-collector, James, the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, Simon the Patriot, and Judas Iscariot, who later turned traitor.
5-8 These were the twelve whom Jesus sent out, with the instructions: “Don’t turn off into any of the heathen roads, and don’t go into any Samaritan town. Concentrate on the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go proclaim that the kingdom of Heaven has arrived. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cure the lepers, drive out devils—give, as you have received, without any charge whatever.
9-10 “Don’t take any gold or silver or even coppers to put in your purse; nor a knapsack for the journey, nor even a change of clothes, or sandals or a staff—the workman is worth his keep!
11-13 “Wherever you go, whether it is into a town or a village, find out someone who is respected, and stay with him until you leave. As you enter his house give it your blessing. If the house deserves it, the peace of your blessing will come to it. But if it doesn’t, your peace will return to you.
14-15 “And if no one will welcome you or even listen to what you have to say, leave that house or town, and once outside it shake off the dust of that place from your feet. Believe me, Sodom and Gomorrah will fare better in the day of judgment than that town.”
He warns them of troubles that lie ahead
16-18 “Here I am sending you out like sheep with wolves all round you; so be as wise as serpents and yet as harmless as doves. But be on your guard against men. For they will take you to the court and flog you in their synagogues. You will be brought into the presence of governors and kings because of me—to give your witness to them and to the heathen.
19-20 “But when they do arrest you, never worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say. You will be told at the time what you are to say. For it will not be really you who are speaking but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21-22 “Brothers are going to betray their brothers to death, and fathers their children. Children are going to betray their parents and have them executed. You yourselves will be universally hated because of my name. But the man who endures to the very end will be safe and sound.
23-27 “But when they persecute you in one town make your escape to the next. Believe me, you will not have covered the towns of Israel before the Son of Man arrives. The disciple is not superior to his teacher any more than the servant is superior to his master, for what is good enough for the teacher is good enough for the disciple as well, and the servant will not fare better than his master. If men call the master of the household the ‘Prince of Evil’, what sort of names will they give to his Servants? But never let them frighten you, for there is nothing covered up which is not going to be exposed nor anything private which will not be made public. The things I tell you in the dark you must say in the daylight, and the things you hear in your private ear you must proclaim from the house-tops.
They should reverence God but have no fear of man
28 “Never be afraid of those who can kill the body but are powerless to kill the soul! Far better to stand in awe of the one who has the power to destroy body and soul in the fires of destruction!
29-31 “Two sparrows sell for a farthing, don’t they? Yet not a single sparrow falls to the ground without your Father’s knowledge. The very hairs of your head are all numbered. Never be afraid, then—you are far more valuable than sparrows.
32-33 “Every man who publicly acknowledges me I shall acknowledge in the presence of my Father in Heaven, but the man who disowns me before men I shall disown before my Father in Heaven.
The Prince of Peace comes to bring division
34-36 “Never think I have come to bring peace upon the earth. No, I have not come to bring peace but a sword! For I have come to set a man against his own father, a daughter against her own mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. A man’s enemies will be those who live in his own house.
37-39 “Anyone who puts his love for father or mother above his love for me does not deserve to be mine, and he who loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me, and neither is the man who refuses to take up his cross and follow my way. The man who has found his own life will lose it, but the man who has lost it for my sake will find it.
40 “Whoever welcomes you, welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me is welcoming the one who sent me.
41-42 “Whoever welcomes a prophet just because he is a prophet will get a prophet’s reward. And whoever welcomes a good man just because he is a good man will get a good man’s reward. Believe me, anyone who gives even a drink of water to one of these little ones, just because he is my disciple, will by no means lose his reward.”

10 예수님은 열두 제자를 불러 그들에게 더러운 귀신을 쫓아내며 모든 병 과 허약한 체질을 고치는 권능을 주셨다.
2 이 열두 사도의 이름은 이렇다: 베드로라는 시몬, 시몬의 형제 안드레, 세베대의 아들 야고보, 야고보의 형제 요한,
3 빌립, 바돌로매, 도마, 세무원 마태, 알패오의 아들 야고보, 다대오,
4 [a]가나안 사람 시몬, 그리고 예수님을 판 가룟 사람 유다였다.
전도자의 각오
5 예수님은 이 열두 사람을 보내시며 이렇게 명령하셨다. “너희는 이방인들이나 사마리아 사람들에게 가지 말고
6 하나님의 잃어버린 양과 같은 이스라엘 사람들에게 가거라.
7 가서 ‘하늘 나라가 가까웠다’ 고 전하여라.
8 병든 사람을 고치고 죽은 사람을 살리고 문둥병자를 깨끗하게 하며 귀신을 쫓아내어라. 너희가 거저 받았으니 거저 주어라.
9 [b]돈은 일체 가지고 가지 말아라.
10 여행 가방이나 갈아 입을 옷이나 여분의 신발이나 지팡이도 갖고 가지 말아라. 일꾼이 자기 먹을 것을 받는 것이 마땅하다.
11 어느 도시나 마을에 들어가든지 [c]너희를 기꺼이 영접하고자 하는 사람을 찾아 너희가 떠날 때까지 그 집에 머물러라.
12 너희는 그 집에 들어가면서 [d]평안을 빌어 주어라.
13 만일 그 집이 너희 평안의 축복을 받을 만하면 너희가 빈 평안이 그 집에 내릴 것이고 그렇지 못하면 그 평안이 너희에게 되돌아올 것이다.
14 누구든지 너희를 영접하지도 않고 너희 말도 듣지 않거든 그 집이나 그 마을을 떠날 때 신발에 묻은 먼지를 떨어 버려라.
15 내가 분명히 말하지만 심판 날에는 소돔과 고모라가 그 마을보다 더 견디기 쉬울 것이다.
16 “내가 너희를 보내는 것이 양을 이리떼 속으로 보내는 것과 같다. 그러므로 너희는 뱀처럼 지혜롭고 비둘기처럼 순결하여라.
17 사람들을 조심하라. 그들이 너희를 [e]법정에 넘겨 주고 회당에서 채찍질할 것이다.
18 너희는 나 때문에 총독들과 왕들 앞에 끌려가서 그들과 이방인들에게 내 증인이 될 것이다.
19 그러나 그들이 너희를 법정에 넘길 때 무엇을 어떻게 말할까 걱정하지 말아라. 그 때에 너희가 할 말을 일러 주실 것이다.
20 이때 말하는 이는 너희가 아니라 너희 속 에서 말씀하시는 너희 아버지의 성령이시다.
21 또 형제가 형제를, 아버지가 자식을 고발하여 죽게 할 것이며 자식이 부모를 대적하여 죽게 할 것이다.
22 그리고 너희가 나 때문에 모든 사람에게서 미움을 받을 것이나 끝까지 견디는 사람은 구원을 받을 것이다.
23 어떤 마을에서 사람들이 너희를 괴롭히거든 다른 마을로 피하라. 내가 분명히 말해 두지만 너희가 이곳 저곳으로 피하며 이스라엘의 마을들을 다 다니기 전에 [f]내가 올 것이다.
24 “제자가 스승보다 높지 못하고 종이 주인보다 높지 못하다.
25 제자는 스승과 같이 되는 것으로 만족해야 하고 종은 주인과 같이 되는 것으로 만족해야 한다. 집 주인인 나를 [g]사탄이라고 불렀으니 [h]너희에게야 오죽하겠느냐?
26 그러나 너희를 위협하는 사람들을 두려워하지 말아라. 감추어진 일이 드러나지 않을 것이 없고 숨겨진 일이 알려지지 않을 것이 없다.
27 너희는 내가 너희에게 어두운 데서 말한 것을 밝은 데서 말하고 너희 귀에 조용히 들려 준 것을 옥상에서 큰 소리로 전파하라.
28 몸은 죽여도 영혼은 죽이지 못하는 사람들을 두려워하지 말고 영혼과 몸을 [i]지옥에서 다 멸망시킬 수 있는 분을 두려워하라.
29 참새 두 마리가 [j]동전 몇 푼에 팔리지 않느냐? 그러나 너희 아버지께서 허락하지 않으시면 그 참새 한 마리도 그저 땅에 떨어지는 법이 없다.
30 하나님은 너희 머리카락도 다 세고 계신다.
31 그러므로 두려워하지 말아라. 너희는 많은 참새들보다 더 귀하다.
32 누구든지 사람들 앞에서 나를 안다고 하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 안다고 할 것이다.
33 그러나 누구든지 사람들 앞에서 나를 모른다고 하면 나도 하늘에 계신 내 아버지 앞에서 그를 모른다고 할 것이다.
34 “너희는 내가 세상에 평화를 주러 왔다고 생각하지 말아라. 평화가 아니라 칼을 주려고 왔다.
35 나는 아들과 아버지, 딸과 어머니, 며느리와 시어머니가 서로 다투게 하려고 왔다.
36 그러므로 사람의 원수는 자기 식구가 될 것이다.
37 나보다 자기 부모를 더 사랑하는 사람은 내 제자가 되기에 적합하지 않고 나보다 자기 자식을 더 사랑하는 사람도 적합하지 않으며
38 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따르지 않는 사람 역시 내 제자로서 적합하지 않다.
39 자기 생명을 아끼는 사람은 잃을 것이며 나를 위해 자기 생명을 버리는 사람은 얻을 것이다.
40 “너희를 영접하는 사람은 나를 영접하는 것이며 나를 영접하는 사람은 나를 보내신 하나님을 영접하는 것이다.
41 누구든지 예언자를 영접하면 예언자가 받는 상을 받을 것이며 의로운 사람을 영접하면 의로운 사람이 받는 상을 받을 것이다.
42 내가 분명히 말해 둔다. [k]아주 보잘것없는 사람이지만 그가 내 제자라는 이유로 그에게 냉수 한 그릇이라도 대접하는 사람은 반드시 상을 받을 것이다.”

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)
10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[b] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(AK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(AL)
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(AM)—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[c](AN)
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)
