10 And (B)when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease. 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, (C)who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and [a]Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; 4 (D)Simon the [b]Cananite, and Judas (E)Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.
Sending Out the Twelve(F)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: (G)“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of (H)the Samaritans. 6 (I)But go rather to the (J)lost sheep of the house of Israel. 7 (K)And as you go, preach, saying, (L)‘The kingdom of heaven [c]is at hand.’ 8 Heal the sick, [d]cleanse the lepers, [e]raise the dead, cast out demons. (M)Freely you have received, freely give. 9 (N)Provide neither gold nor silver nor (O)copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; (P)for a worker is worthy of his food.
11 (Q)“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out. 12 And when you go into a household, greet it. 13 (R)If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. (S)But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 (T)And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, (U)shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Assuredly, I say to you, (V)it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!
Persecutions Are Coming(W)
16 (X)“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. (Y)Therefore be wise as serpents and (Z)harmless[f] as doves. 17 But beware of men, for (AA)they will deliver you up to councils and (AB)scourge you in their synagogues. 18 (AC)You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 (AD)But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For (AE)it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 (AF)for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
21 (AG)“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And (AH)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. (AI)But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23 (AJ)When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have (AK)gone through the cities of Israel (AL)before the Son of Man comes.
24 (AM)“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If (AN)they have called the master of the house [g]Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! 26 Therefore do not fear them. (AO)For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.
Jesus Teaches the Fear of God(AP)
27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, (AQ)speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28 (AR)And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Jesus Sends Out the Twelve Apostles

Persecution Will Come

Have No Fear

Not Peace, but a Sword

A Hard Road Ahead of Them
16 “(X)Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be as (Y)wary as serpents, and as (Z)innocent as doves. 17 But be on guard against people, for they will hand you over to the (AA)courts and flog you (AB)in their synagogues; 18 and you will even be brought before governors and kings on My account, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 (AC)But when they hand you over, (AD)do not worry about how or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given you in that hour. 20 For (AE)it is not you who are speaking, but it is the Spirit of your Father who is speaking [o]in you.
21 “Now (AF)brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; and (AG)children will rise up against parents and [p]cause them to be put to death. 22 And (AH)you will be hated by all because of My name, but (AI)it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.
23 “But whenever they (AJ)persecute you in [q]one city, flee to the [r]next; for truly I say to you, you will not finish going through the cities of Israel (AK)until the Son of Man comes.
The Meaning of Discipleship
24 “(AL)A [s]disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. 25 It is enough for the disciple that he may become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. (AM)If they have called the head of the house [t](AN)Beelzebul, how much more will they insult the members of his household!
26 “So do not (AO)fear them, (AP)for there is nothing concealed that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known. 27 (AQ)What I tell you in the darkness, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered in your ear, proclaim (AR)on the housetops. 28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather (AS)fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in [u](AT)hell. 29 (AU)Are two sparrows not sold for an [v]assarion? Som får bland vargar
16 (I) Se, jag sänder er som får in bland vargar. Var därför listiga som ormar och oskyldiga som duvor. 17 (J) Akta er för människorna. De ska utlämna er åt domstolar och piska[p] er i sina synagogor. 18 (K) Ni ska föras inför ståthållare och kungar för min skull, för att vittna inför dem och hedningarna. 19 (L) Men när de utlämnar er, bekymra er då inte för hur ni ska tala eller vad ni ska säga. Det kommer att ges åt er i den stunden, 20 och då är det inte ni som talar, utan er Fars Ande som talar genom er.
21 (M) En bror ska utlämna sin bror till att dödas och en far sitt barn, och barn ska göra uppror mot sina föräldrar och döda dem. 22 (N) Ni kommer att bli hatade av alla för mitt namns skull. Men den som håller ut till slutet ska bli frälst. 23 Och när man förföljer er i en stad, så fly till en annan. Jag säger er sanningen: Ni hinner inte igenom Israels städer innan Människosonen kommer.
24 (O) En lärjunge står inte över sin lärare, och en tjänare står inte över sin herre. 25 (P) Det räcker för lärjungen att bli som sin lärare, och för tjänaren att bli som sin herre. Om husets Herre blir kallad för Beelsebul[q], hur mycket mer ska då inte hans tjänare bli det?
26 (Q) Var alltså inte rädda för dem. Det finns inget dolt som inte ska uppenbaras, och inget gömt som inte ska bli känt. 27 Vad jag säger till er i mörkret ska ni säga i ljuset, och vad ni hör viskas i ert öra ska ni ropa ut på taken.
28 Var inte rädda för dem som dödar kroppen men inte kan döda själen. Frukta i stället honom som kan fördärva både själ och kropp i Gehenna. 29 Säljs inte två sparvar för ett kopparmynt[r]? Ändå faller inte en enda av dem till marken utan er Far[s]. 30 (R) Och på er är till och med alla hårstrån räknade. 31 (S) Var alltså inte rädda. Ni är mer värda än många sparvar.
32 (T) Den som bekänner mig inför människorna ska också jag bekänna inför min Far i himlen. 33 (U) Men den som förnekar mig inför människorna ska också jag förneka inför min Far i himlen.
Inte fred utan svärd
34 (V) Tro inte att jag har kommit för att skapa fred på jorden. Jag har inte kommit för att sända fred, utan svärd. 35 Jag har kommit för att skilja en son från sin far, en dotter från sin mor och en sonhustru från sin svärmor,[t] 36 (W) och var och en får sin familj till fiender.
37 (X) Den som älskar far eller mor mer än mig är inte värdig mig, och den som älskar son eller dotter mer än mig är inte värdig mig. 38 (Y) Den som inte tar sitt kors och följer mig är inte värdig mig. 39 (Z) Den som finner sitt liv ska mista det, och den som mister sitt liv för min skull ska finna det.
40 (AA) Den som tar emot er tar emot mig, och den som tar emot mig tar emot honom som har sänt mig. 41 (AB) Den som tar emot en profet för att det är en profet ska få en profets lön, och den som tar emot en rättfärdig för att det är en rättfärdig ska få en rättfärdigs lön. 42 Och den som bara ger till en av dessa små en bägare friskt vatten, därför att det är en lärjunge – jag säger er sanningen: Han ska inte gå miste om sin lön."

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)
10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) 6 Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) 7 As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.
9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[b] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)
32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(AK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(AL)
34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn
“‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(AM)—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[c](AN)
37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)
