The Genealogy of Jesus Christ
1 The book of the genealogy of [a]Jesus [b]Christ, (A)the son of David, (B)the son of Abraham:
2 Abraham [c]was the father of Isaac,
and Isaac was the father of Jacob,
and Jacob was the father of [d]Judah and his brothers.
3 And Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar,
and (C)Perez was the father of Hezron,
and Hezron was the father of [e]Ram.
4 And Ram was the father of Amminadab,
and Amminadab was the father of Nahshon,
and Nahshon was the father of Salmon.
5 And Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab,
and Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth,
and Obed was the father of Jesse.
6 And Jesse was the father of David the king.
And David (D)was the father of Solomon by [f]the wife of Uriah.
7 And Solomon (E)was the father of Rehoboam,
and Rehoboam was the father of Abijah,
and Abijah was the father of [g]Asa.
8 And Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat,
and Jehoshaphat was the father of [h]Joram,
and Joram was the father of Uzziah.
9 And Uzziah was the father of [i]Jotham,
and Jotham was the father of Ahaz,
and Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah.
10 And Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh,
and Manasseh was the father of [j]Amon,
and Amon was the (F)father of Josiah.
11 And Josiah was the father of [k]Jeconiah and his brothers, at the time of the (G)deportation to Babylon.
12 And after the (H)deportation to Babylon:
Jeconiah was the father of [l]Shealtiel,
and Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel.
13 And Zerubbabel was the father of [m]Abihud,
and Abihud was the father of Eliakim,
and Eliakim was the father of Azor.
14 And Azor was the father of Zadok,
and Zadok was the father of Achim,
and Achim was the father of Eliud.
15 And Eliud was the father of Eleazar,
and Eleazar was the father of Matthan,
and Matthan was the father of Jacob.
16 And Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, by whom Jesus was born, (I)who is called [n]Christ.
17 Therefore all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David to the (J)deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the (K)deportation to Babylon to [o]the Christ, fourteen generations.
The Conception and Birth of Jesus
18 Now the birth of Jesus [p]Christ was as follows: when His (L)mother Mary had been [q]betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was (M)found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned [r](N)to send her away secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the [s]Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “(O)Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for [t]the One who has been [u]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she will bear a Son; and (P)you shall call His name Jesus, for [v]He (Q)will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this [w]took place in order that what was (R)spoken by the [x]Lord through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying, 23 “(S)Behold, the virgin shall be with (T)child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name [y]Immanuel,” which translated means, “(U)God with us.” 24 And Joseph got up from his sleep and did as the angel of the [z]Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 [aa]but kept her a virgin until she [ab](V)gave birth to a Son; and (W)he called His name Jesus.

17 Alltså blir det tillsammans fjorton släktled[d] från Abraham till David, fjorton led från David till fångenskapen i Babylon och fjorton led från fångenskapen i Babylon till Kristus.
Jesu födelse
18 (L) Med Jesu Kristi födelse gick det till så: hans mor Maria var trolovad[e] med Josef, men innan de hade varit tillsammans visade det sig att hon var havande genom den helige Ande. 19 Hennes man Josef var rättfärdig och ville inte dra skam över henne[f], och därför beslöt han att skilja sig från henne i hemlighet.
20 Men när han funderade över detta, då visade sig en Herrens ängel för honom i en dröm och sade: "Josef, Davids son! Var inte rädd för att ta till dig Maria som din hustru, för barnet i henne har blivit till genom den helige Ande. 21 (M) Hon ska föda en son, och du ska ge honom namnet Jesus[g], för han ska frälsa sitt folk från deras synder."
22 Allt detta hände för att det som Herren hade sagt genom profeten skulle uppfyllas: 23 (N) Se, jungfrun ska bli havande och föda en son, och man ska ge honom namnet Immanuel. Det betyder: Gud med oss.[h]
24 När Josef vaknade upp ur sömnen, gjorde han som Herrens ängel hade befallt och tog sin hustru till sig. 25 (O) Men han rörde henne inte förrän hon hade fött en son. Och han gav honom namnet Jesus.

Symmetrin med fjorton släktled rimmar nämligen med det hebreiska talvärdet för "David" (jfr not till 1:1). Det var inte ovanligt att släkttavlor förkortades (jfr t ex Esra 7:1-5), eftersom ordet "far" också kan användas om en förfader (jfr Matt 3:9).
- 1:18 trolovad En juridiskt bindande överlåtelse i väntan på bröllop. Trolovning ingicks normalt i tonåren, och redan vid detta stadium kunde otrohet bestraffas med döden (5 Mos 22:23f).
- 1:19 ville inte dra skam över henne Genom att anklaga henne offentligt för otrohet.

Nacimiento de Jesucristo
18 El nacimiento de Jesucristo fue así: Su madre, María, estaba comprometida para casarse con José; pero, antes de unirse a él, resultó que estaba embarazada por el poder del Espíritu Santo. 19 Como José, su esposo, era un hombre justo y no quería exponerla a vergüenza pública, decidió romper en secreto el compromiso.
20 Pero cuando él estaba considerando hacerlo, se le apareció en sueños un ángel del Señor y le dijo: «José, hijo de David, no temas recibir a María por esposa, porque ella ha concebido por el poder del Espíritu Santo. 21 Dará a luz un hijo y le pondrás por nombre Jesús,[d] porque él salvará a su pueblo de sus pecados».
22 Todo esto sucedió para que se cumpliera lo que el Señor había dicho por medio del profeta: 23 «La virgen concebirá y dará a luz un hijo y lo llamarán Emanuel»[e] (que significa «Dios con nosotros»).
24 Cuando José se despertó, hizo lo que el ángel del Señor le había mandado y recibió a María por esposa. 25 Pero no tuvo relaciones conyugales con ella hasta que dio a luz un hijo,[f] a quien le puso por nombre Jesús.
