7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, (A)“Brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from (B)the wrath to come? 8 Therefore bear fruits worthy of repentance, 9 and do not think to say to yourselves, (C)‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I say to you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones. 10 And even now the ax is laid to the root of the trees. (D)Therefore every tree which does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 (E)I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. (F)He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit [a]and fire. 12 (G)His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will (H)burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
John Baptizes Jesus(I)
13 (J)Then Jesus came (K)from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. 14 And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”
15 But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.
16 (L)When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and [b]He saw (M)the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17 (N)And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, (O)“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Satan Tempts Jesus(P)
4 Then (Q)Jesus was led up by (R)the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. 3 Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
4 But He answered and said, “It is written, (S)‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
5 Then the devil took Him up (T)into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
(U)‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and,
(V)‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
7 Jesus said to him, “It is written again, (W)‘You shall not [c]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
8 Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and (X)showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
10 Then Jesus said to him, [d]“Away with you, Satan! For it is written, (Y)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
11 Then the devil (Z)left Him, and behold, (AA)angels came and ministered to Him.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to where he was baptizing, he said to them: “You brood of vipers!(A) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(B) 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.(C) 9 And do not think you can say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(D) I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 10 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.(E)
11 “I baptize you with[a] water for repentance.(F) But after me comes one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with[b] the Holy Spirit(G) and fire.(H) 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor, gathering his wheat into the barn and burning up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(I)
The Baptism of Jesus(J)
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.(K) 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,(L) and he saw the Spirit of God(M) descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven(N) said, “This is my Son,(O) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”(P)
Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(Q)
4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[c](R) by the devil.(S) 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights,(T) he was hungry. 3 The tempter(U) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,(V) tell these stones to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[d]”(W)
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city(X) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. 6 “If you are the Son of God,”(Y) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[e]”(Z)
7 Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[f]”(AA)
8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. 9 “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”
10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!(AB) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[g]”(AC)
11 Then the devil left him,(AD) and angels came and attended him.(AE)
