The Baptism of Jesus

13 (A)Then Jesus *arrived (B)from Galilee at the Jordan, coming to John to be baptized by him. 14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I have the need to be baptized by You, and yet You are coming to me?” 15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us (C)to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he *allowed Him. 16 After He was baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and [a](D)he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and [b]settling on Him, 17 and behold, a voice from the heavens said, “(E)This is [c]My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

The Temptation of Jesus

(F)Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness (G)to be tempted by the devil. And after He had (H)fasted for forty days and forty nights, He [d]then became hungry. And (I)the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the (J)Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written: ‘(K)Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes out of the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil *took Him along into (L)the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and he *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written:

(M)He will give His angels orders concerning You’;

and

On their hands they will lift You up,
So that You do not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, [e]On the other hand, it is written: ‘(N)You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

(O)Again, the devil *took Him along to a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, “(P)All these things I will give You, if You fall down and [f]worship me.” 10 Then Jesus *said to him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘(Q)You shall worship the Lord your God, and [g]serve Him only.’” 11 Then the devil *left Him; and behold, (R)angels came and began to serve Him.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

12 Now when Jesus heard that (S)John had been taken into custody, (T)He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and (U)settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This happened so that what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled:

15 (V)The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
[h]By the way of the sea, on the other side of the Jordan, Galilee of the [i]Gentiles
16 (W)The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”

17 (X)From that time Jesus began to [j]preach and say, (Y)Repent, for the kingdom of heaven [k]is at hand.”

The Baptism of Jesus(A)

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John.(B) 14 But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?”

15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.

16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened,(C) and he saw the Spirit of God(D) descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven(E) said, “This is my Son,(F) whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”(G)

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(H)

Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted[a](I) by the devil.(J) After fasting forty days and forty nights,(K) he was hungry. The tempter(L) came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God,(M) tell these stones to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’[b](N)

Then the devil took him to the holy city(O) and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,”(P) he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[c](Q)

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[d](R)

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”

10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!(S) For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[e](T)

11 Then the devil left him,(U) and angels came and attended him.(V)

Jesus Begins to Preach

12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison,(W) he withdrew to Galilee.(X) 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum,(Y) which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill(Z) what was said through the prophet Isaiah:

15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
    Galilee of the Gentiles—
16 the people living in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
    a light has dawned.”[f](AA)

17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven(AB) has come near.”
