The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived; with him was a large crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 At once he came up to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” and kissed him.(A) 50 Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you are here to do.”[a] Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and arrested him.(B) 51 Suddenly one of those with Jesus put his hand on his sword, drew it, and struck the slave of the high priest, cutting off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place, for all who take the sword will die by the sword.(C) 53 Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels?(D) 54 But how then would the scriptures be fulfilled, which say it must happen in this way?”(E) 55 At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest me as though I were a rebel? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56 But all this has taken place, so that the scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.(F)

Jesus before the High Priest

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had gathered. 58 But Peter was following him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and going inside he sat with the guards in order to see how this would end.(G) 59 Now the chief priests and the whole council were looking for false testimony against Jesus so that they might put him to death, 60 but they found none, though many false witnesses came forward. At last two came forward(H) 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”(I) 62 The high priest stood up and said, “Have you no answer? What is it that they testify against you?” 63 But Jesus was silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I put you under oath before the living God, tell us if you are the Messiah,[b] the Son of God.”(J) 64 Jesus said to him, “You have said so. But I tell you,

From now on you will see the Son of Man
seated at the right hand of Power
and coming on the clouds of heaven.”(K)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? You have now heard his blasphemy.(L) 66 What do you think?” They answered, “He deserves death.”(M) 67 Then they spat in his face and struck him, and some slapped him,(N) 68 saying, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah![c] Who is it that struck you?”

Peter’s Denial of Jesus

69 Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A female servant came to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before all of them, saying, “I do not know what you are talking about.” 71 When he went out to the porch, another female servant saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene.”[d] 72 Again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you are also one of them, for your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to curse, and he swore an oath, “I do not know the man!” At that moment the cock crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered what Jesus had said: “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.(O)

Jesus Brought before Pilate

27 When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus in order to bring about his death. They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate the governor.(P)

The Suicide of Judas

When Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus[e] was condemned, he repented and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders.(Q) He said, “I have sinned by betraying innocent[f] blood.” But they said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.”(R) Throwing down the pieces of silver in the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.(S) But the chief priests, taking the pieces of silver, said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since they are blood money.” After conferring together, they used them to buy the potter’s field as a place to bury foreigners. For this reason that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day.(T) Then was fulfilled what had been spoken through the prophet Jeremiah,[g] “And they took[h] the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one on whom a price had been set,[i] on whom some of the people of Israel had set a price,(U) 10 and they gave[j] them for the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”

Pilate Questions Jesus

11 Now Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” Jesus said, “You say so.” 12 But when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he did not answer.(V) 13 Then Pilate said to him, “Do you not hear how many accusations they make against you?”(W) 14 But he gave him no answer, not even to a single charge, so that the governor was greatly amazed.(X)

Barabbas or Jesus?

15 Now at the festival the governor was accustomed to release a prisoner for the crowd, anyone whom they wanted. 16 At that time they had a notorious prisoner called Jesus[k] Barabbas. 17 So after they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you, Jesus[l] Barabbas or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”[m] 18 For he realized that it was out of jealousy that they had handed him over. 19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that innocent man, for today I have suffered a great deal because of a dream about him.”(Y) 20 Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus killed.(Z) 21 The governor again said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release for you?” And they said, “Barabbas.” 22 Pilate said to them, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”[n] All of them said, “Let him be crucified!” 23 Then he asked, “Why, what evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Let him be crucified!”

Pilate Hands Jesus Over to Be Crucified

24 So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing but rather that a riot was beginning, he took some water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood;[o] see to it yourselves.”(AA) 25 Then the people as a whole answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”(AB) 26 So he released Barabbas for them, and after flogging Jesus he handed him over to be crucified.(AC)

The Soldiers Mock Jesus

27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the governor’s headquarters,[p] and they gathered the whole cohort around him.(AD) 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29 and after twisting some thorns into a crown they put it on his head. They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”(AE) 30 They spat on him and took the reed and struck him on the head.(AF) 31 After mocking him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AG)

The Crucifixion of Jesus

32 As they went out, they came upon a man from Cyrene named Simon; they compelled this man to carry his cross.(AH) 33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it.(AI) 35 And when they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among themselves by casting lots;[q](AJ) 36 then they sat down there and kept watch over him.(AK) 37 Over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.”

38 Then two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left.(AL) 39 Those who passed by derided[r] him, shaking their heads(AM) 40 and saying, “You who would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”(AN) 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking him, saying, 42 “He saved others; he cannot save himself.[s] He is the King of Israel; let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.(AO) 43 He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he wants to, for he said, ‘I am God’s Son.’ ”(AP) 44 The rebels who were crucified with him also taunted him in the same way.

The Death of Jesus

45 From noon on, darkness came over the whole land[t] until three in the afternoon.(AQ) 46 And about three o’clock Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” that is, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”(AR) 47 When some of the bystanders heard it, they said, “This man is calling for Elijah.” 48 At once one of them ran and got a sponge, filled it with sour wine, put it on a stick, and gave it to him to drink.(AS) 49 But the others said, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to save him.”[u] 50 Then Jesus cried again with a loud voice and breathed his last.[v] 51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook, and the rocks were split.(AT) 52 The tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised. 53 After his resurrection they came out of the tombs and entered the holy city and appeared to many. 54 Now when the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were terrified and said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”[w](AU)

55 Many women were also there, looking on from a distance; they had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.(AV) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[x] and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.(AW)

The Burial of Jesus

57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who also was himself a disciple of Jesus.(AX) 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 So Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth 60 and laid it in his new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock. He then rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb and went away.(AY) 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.

Jesus Arrested(A)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(B) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(C) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[a](D)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(E) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(F)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(G) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(H) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(I) that say it must happen in this way?”

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching,(J) and you did not arrest me. 56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.”(K) Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin(L)

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas(M) the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.(N) He entered and sat down with the guards(O) to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin(P) were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses(Q) came forward.

Finally two(R) came forward 61 and declared, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’”(S)

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, “Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?” 63 But Jesus remained silent.(T)

The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath(U) by the living God:(V) Tell us if you are the Messiah,(W) the Son of God.”(X)

64 “You have said so,”(Y) Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One(Z) and coming on the clouds of heaven.”[b](AA)

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes(AB) and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?”

“He is worthy of death,”(AC) they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists.(AD) Others slapped him 68 and said, “Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?”(AE)

Peter Disowns Jesus(AF)

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. “You also were with Jesus of Galilee,” she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. “I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, “This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

72 He denied it again, with an oath: “I don’t know the man!”

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, “Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.”

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, “I don’t know the man!”

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.”(AG) And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Judas Hangs Himself

27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(AH) So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(AI) to Pilate the governor.(AJ)

When Judas, who had betrayed him,(AK) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(AL) to the chief priests and the elders. “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(AM)

So Judas threw the money into the temple(AN) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(AO)

The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(AP) to this day. Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(AQ) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[c](AR)

Jesus Before Pilate(AS)

11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(AT)

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(AU) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(AV) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(AW) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(AX) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[d] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(AY) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.

19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(AZ) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(BA) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(BB) because of him.”

20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(BC)

21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.

“Barabbas,” they answered.

22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(BD) Pilate asked.

They all answered, “Crucify him!”

23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(BE) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(BF) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(BG) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(BH)

25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(BI)

26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(BJ) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(BK)

27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(BL) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(BM) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(BN) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(BO) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(BP)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(BQ)

32 As they were going out,(BR) they met a man from Cyrene,(BS) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(BT) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(BU) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(BV) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(BW) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(BX) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.

38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(BY) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(BZ) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(CA) save yourself!(CB) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(CC) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(CD) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(CE) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(CF) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(CG)

45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(CH) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[e] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[f](CI)

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(CJ) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(CK)

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(CL) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(CM) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[g] went into the holy city(CN) and appeared to many people.

54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(CO) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(CP)

55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(CQ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[h] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(CR)

The Burial of Jesus(CS)

57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(CT) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
