41 (A)Watch and (B)pray that you (C)may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, (D)your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for (E)their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for (F)the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.[a] See, (G)the hour is at hand, and (H)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (I)While he was still speaking, (J)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” 49 And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, (K)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. 50 Jesus said to him, (L)“Friend, (M)do what you came to do.”[b] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. 51 And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his (N)sword and struck the servant[c] of the high priest and cut off his ear. 52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For (O)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. 53 (P)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me (Q)more than twelve (R)legions of angels? 54 (S)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?”

41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.(A) The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.”(B)

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour(C) has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”

Jesus Arrested(D)

47 While he was still speaking, Judas,(E) one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: “The one I kiss is the man; arrest him.” 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, “Greetings, Rabbi!”(F) and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”[a](G)

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword,(H) drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.(I)

52 “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.(J) 53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?(K) 54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled(L) that say it must happen in this way?”
