12 In that time Jesus went by corns in the sabbath day [on the sabbath day]; and his disciples hungered, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.
2 And the Pharisees, seeing, said to him, Lo! thy disciples do that thing that is not leaveful to them to do in [the] sabbaths.
3 And he said to them, Whether ye have not read, what David did, when he hungered, and they that were with him?
4 how he entered into the house of God, and ate loaves of proposition, which loaves it was not leaveful to him to eat, neither to them that were with him, but to priests alone?[a]
5 Or whether ye have not read in the law, that in the sabbaths priests in the temple defoul the sabbaths, and they be without blame?
6 And I say to you, that here is a greater than the temple. [Soothly I say to you, for this is more than the temple.]
7 And if ye knew, what it is, I will mercy, and not sacrifice, ye should never have condemned innocents.
8 For man's Son is Lord, yea, of the sabbath. [Truly man's Son is Lord also of the sabbath.]

The disciples pluck the ears of grain. He defends them, heals the withered hand, helps the possessed man who was blind and dumb, rebukes the unfaithful who insist on having signs, and shows who are his brother, sister, and mother.
12 At that time Jesus went through the grain on the Sabbath days. And his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck the ears of grain and to eat. 2 When the Pharisees saw that, they said to him, Look, your disciples are doing that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbath day. 3 He said to them, Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, and those also who were with him? 4 How he entered into the house of God and ate the hallowed loaves, which were not lawful for him to eat, neither for those who were with him, but only for the priests? 5 Or have you not read in the law how the priests in the temple break the Sabbath day, and yet are blameless? 6 But I say to you that there is one here greater than the temple. 7 So then if you had known what this means: I require mercy, and not sacrifice – you would never have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the Sabbath day.

6 But I say unto you, that here is one greater than the Temple.
7 Wherefore if ye knew what this is, (F)I will have mercy and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the innocents.

12 At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain(C) and eat them. 2 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, “Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath.”(D)
3 He answered, “Haven’t you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(E) 4 He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests.(F) 5 Or haven’t you read in the Law that the priests on Sabbath duty in the temple desecrate the Sabbath(G) and yet are innocent? 6 I tell you that something greater than the temple is here.(H) 7 If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’[a](I) you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man(J) is Lord of the Sabbath.”
