16 And Jacob begot Joseph the husband of (A)Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations, from David until the captivity in Babylon are fourteen generations, and from the captivity in Babylon until the Christ are fourteen generations.

Christ Born of Mary(B)

18 Now the (C)birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child (D)of the Holy Spirit. 19 Then Joseph her husband, being [a]a just man, and not wanting (E)to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. 20 But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, (F)for that which is [b]conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 (G)And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name [c]Jesus, (H)for He will save His people from their sins.”

22 So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: 23 (I)“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”

24 Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife,

17 So all the generations from Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen generations, and from the deportation to Babylon to (B)the Christ fourteen generations.

The Birth of Jesus Christ

18 Now the birth of (C)Jesus Christ[a] took place in this way. (D)When his mother Mary had been betrothed[b] to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child (E)from the Holy Spirit. 19 And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling (F)to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. 20 But as he considered these things, behold, (G)an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a son, and (H)you shall call his name Jesus, (I)for he will save his people from their sins.” 22 (J)All this took place (K)to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:

23 (L)“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name (M)Immanuel”

(which means, God (N)with us). 24 When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife,

16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary,(A) and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.(B)

17 Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.

Joseph Accepts Jesus as His Son

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[a]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.(C) 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[b] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce(D) her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel(E) of the Lord appeared to him in a dream(F) and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[c](G) because he will save his people from their sins.”(H)

22 All this took place to fulfill(I) what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[d](J) (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel(K) of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
