Jesus sänder ut de tolv
10 (A) Jesus kallade till sig sina tolv lärjungar och gav dem makt att driva ut orena andar och att bota alla slags sjukdomar och krämpor. 2 Detta är namnen på de tolv apostlarna[a]: först Simon som kallas Petrus[b] och hans bror Andreas[c], sedan Jakob, Sebedeus son[d], och hans bror Johannes[e], 3 Filippus[f] och Bartolomeus[g], Tomas[h] och tullindrivaren Matteus[i], Jakob, Alfeus son[j], och Taddeus[k], 4 Simon seloten[l] och Judas Iskariot[m], han som skulle förråda honom.
5 (B) Dessa tolv sände Jesus ut, och han befallde dem: "Gå inte bort till hedningarnas område eller in i någon samarisk stad. 6 (C) Gå i stället till de förlorade fåren av Israels hus. 7 (D) Där ni går fram ska ni predika: Himmelriket är nära. 8 Bota sjuka, uppväck döda, gör spetälska rena och driv ut onda andar. Det ni har fått som gåva ska ni ge som gåva. 9 (E) Skaffa er inte guld, silver eller koppar i era bälten, 10 (F) inte väska för resan, inte två tunikor eller sandaler eller stav, för arbetaren är värd sin mat.
11 När ni kommer in i en stad eller by, ta då reda på vem som är värdig och stanna där tills ni går vidare. 12 Och när ni kommer in i ett hus[n], så hälsa[o] det. 13 Om huset är värdigt ska er frid vila över det, men är det inte värdigt ska er frid återvända till er. 14 (G) Och om man inte tar emot er eller lyssnar till era ord, så lämna det huset eller den staden och skaka av dammet från era fötter. 15 (H) Jag säger er sanningen: Sodoms och Gomorras land ska få det lindrigare på domens dag än den staden.
Som får bland vargar
16 (I) Se, jag sänder er som får in bland vargar. Var därför listiga som ormar och oskyldiga som duvor. 17 (J) Akta er för människorna. De ska utlämna er åt domstolar och piska[p] er i sina synagogor. 18 (K) Ni ska föras inför ståthållare och kungar för min skull, för att vittna inför dem och hedningarna. 19 (L) Men när de utlämnar er, bekymra er då inte för hur ni ska tala eller vad ni ska säga. Det kommer att ges åt er i den stunden, 20 och då är det inte ni som talar, utan er Fars Ande som talar genom er.
21 (M) En bror ska utlämna sin bror till att dödas och en far sitt barn, och barn ska göra uppror mot sina föräldrar och döda dem. 22 (N) Ni kommer att bli hatade av alla för mitt namns skull. Men den som håller ut till slutet ska bli frälst. 23 Och när man förföljer er i en stad, så fly till en annan. Jag säger er sanningen: Ni hinner inte igenom Israels städer innan Människosonen kommer.
24 (O) En lärjunge står inte över sin lärare, och en tjänare står inte över sin herre. 25 (P) Det räcker för lärjungen att bli som sin lärare, och för tjänaren att bli som sin herre. Om husets Herre blir kallad för Beelsebul[q], hur mycket mer ska då inte hans tjänare bli det?
26 (Q) Var alltså inte rädda för dem. Det finns inget dolt som inte ska uppenbaras, och inget gömt som inte ska bli känt. 27 Vad jag säger till er i mörkret ska ni säga i ljuset, och vad ni hör viskas i ert öra ska ni ropa ut på taken.
28 Var inte rädda för dem som dödar kroppen men inte kan döda själen. Frukta i stället honom som kan fördärva både själ och kropp i Gehenna. 29 Säljs inte två sparvar för ett kopparmynt[r]? Ändå faller inte en enda av dem till marken utan er Far[s]. 30 (R) Och på er är till och med alla hårstrån räknade. 31 (S) Var alltså inte rädda. Ni är mer värda än många sparvar.
32 (T) Den som bekänner mig inför människorna ska också jag bekänna inför min Far i himlen. 33 (U) Men den som förnekar mig inför människorna ska också jag förneka inför min Far i himlen.
Inte fred utan svärd
34 (V) Tro inte att jag har kommit för att skapa fred på jorden. Jag har inte kommit för att sända fred, utan svärd. 35 Jag har kommit för att skilja en son från sin far, en dotter från sin mor och en sonhustru från sin svärmor,[t] 36 (W) och var och en får sin familj till fiender.
37 (X) Den som älskar far eller mor mer än mig är inte värdig mig, och den som älskar son eller dotter mer än mig är inte värdig mig. 38 (Y) Den som inte tar sitt kors och följer mig är inte värdig mig. 39 (Z) Den som finner sitt liv ska mista det, och den som mister sitt liv för min skull ska finna det.
40 (AA) Den som tar emot er tar emot mig, och den som tar emot mig tar emot honom som har sänt mig. 41 (AB) Den som tar emot en profet för att det är en profet ska få en profets lön, och den som tar emot en rättfärdig för att det är en rättfärdig ska få en rättfärdigs lön. 42 Och den som bara ger till en av dessa små en bägare friskt vatten, därför att det är en lärjunge – jag säger er sanningen: Han ska inte gå miste om sin lön."

- 10:2 Jakob, Sebedeus son Tillhörde Jesu närmaste lärjungar (4:21f, 17:1f, 20:20f, 26:37, Luk 9:54) och blev som den förste av apostlarna martyr, halshuggen på 40-talet e Kr i Jerusalem (Apg 12:2).
- 10:2 hans bror Johannes Författare till Johannesevangeliet, Johannesbreven och troligen Uppenbarelseboken, "den lärjunge som Jesus älskade" (Joh 13:23, 19:26, 20:2, 21:7), en av kyrkans "pelare" (Gal 2:9) som längre fram levde till hög ålder i Efesos.
- 10:3 Filippus figurerar huvudsakligen i Johannesevangeliet (1:43f, 6:5f, 12:21, 14:8). Enligt traditionen förkunnade han sedan i nuvarande Turkiet där han blev korsfäst i Hierapolis.
- 10:3 Bartolomeus Arameiska för "Tolmais son", troligen samma person som bar förnamnet Natanael (Joh 1:45f). Enligt traditionen missionerade han bl a i Indien och sedan i Armenien där han till sist blev flådd levande.
- 10:3 Tomas kallas ibland Tvivlaren (jfr Joh 20:24f, se även 11:16 och 14:5). Enligt traditionen förkunnade han sedan i Syrien, Persien och Indien.
- 10:3 Matteus Författare till Matteusevangeliet, också kallad Levi (Luk 5:27). Längre fram kan han ha förkunnat i Persien och Etiopien.
- 10:3 Jakob, Alfeus son är mindre känd då han hamnat i skuggan av sin mer kände namne Jakob, Herrens bror som skrev Jakobsbrevet.
- 10:3 Taddeus Andra handskrifter: "Lebbeus" (de båda namnen är smeknamn för ett älskat barn, av arameiska för "bröst" respektive "hjärta"). Troligen samma person som Judas, Jakobs son (Luk 6:16). Enligt traditionen förkunnade han i Edessa, Mesopotamien och Persien.
- 10:4 Simon seloten Seloterna (av grek. zélos, iver, jfr eng. "zeal") var nationalister som ivrade för uppror mot romarna. I denna vers används deras hebreiska namnform, kananaíos. Traditionen kring Simons vidare öden är flertydig.
- 10:4 Judas Iskariot stal ur kassan (Joh 12:6), förrådde Jesus för pengar (Matt 26:14f) och begick sedan självmord (27:5). Namnet Iskariot syftar troligen på Keriot, en stad i södra Judeen.
- 10:12 hus Grek. oikía betecknar både byggnaden och den familj som bor där (jfr "hushåll").
- 10:12 hälsa Den normala hälsningen var en tillönskan om frid och välgång (hebr. shalóm, jfr dubbeltydigheten i det svenska ordet "hälsa"). Se även Rut 2:4.
- 10:17 piska Hos judarna verkställdes kroppsstraff normalt med läderpiska (5 Mos 25:2f).
- 10:25 Beelsebul Judiskt namn för djävulen, de onda andarnas furste (12:24). Alternativ form för hebr. Baal-Zebúb, "flugornas herre" som tillbads bland filisteerna i Ekron (2 Kung 1:2f).
- 10:29 kopparmynt Grek. as, en sextondels denar eller en halv timlön för den enkle arbetaren.
- 10:29 utan er Far Inte utan Guds närvaro, vetskap, delaktighet eller vilja (jfr Luk 12:6).
- 10:35f Mika 7:6.

10 Vid den tiden kallade Jesus till sig sina tolv lärjungar och gav dem fullmakt att driva ut onda andar och att bota alla slags sjukdomar.
2 Här följer namnen på dessa tolv: Simon (som senare kom att kallas Petrus), Andreas (Petrus bror), Jakob och Johannes (söner till Sebedaios),
3 Filippos, Bartolomaios, Tomas, Matteus (skatteindrivaren), Jakob (Alfaios son), Taddaios,
4 Simon (en medlem av seloternas revolutionära parti) och Judas Iskariot (som senare förrådde honom).
5 Dessa tolv sände Jesus iväg med följande instruktioner: Gå inte till samarierna eller till andra folk,
6 utan bara till Israels folk - Guds förlorade får.
7 Gå och tala om för dem att himmelriket är nära.
8 Bota sjuka, väck upp döda, bota leprasjuka och driv ut de onda andarna. Gör allt utan betalning, för också ni har fått det som gåva!
9 Ta inga pengar med er.
10 Inte heller någon väska med extra kläder och skor eller någon vandringsstav. Ni kommer att få mat och allt det ni behöver för det är arbetaren värd.
11 Varje gång ni kommer in i en stad eller en by, så sök upp någon som tar emot er och lyssnar till ert budskap och stanna i hans hem tills ni fortsätter till nästa stad.
12 Om det visar sig vara ett gudfruktigt hem, ge det då er välsignelse.
13 Om det inte är det, behåll välsignelsen för er själva.
14 Och om man inte tar emot er i en stad eller ett hem så bekymra er inte mer om människorna där. Skaka i stället dammet av era fötter och gå därifrån.
15 Men en sak är säker: Människorna i de onda städerna Sodom och Gomorra kommer att få det lättare på domens dag än dem som inte välkomnar er.
Jesus förbereder lärjungarna på förföljelse
16 Jag sänder ut er som får bland vargar. Var vaksamma som ormar och beskedliga som duvor.
17 Men akta er! Ni kommer nämligen att arresteras och ställas inför rätta och bli misshandlade i synagogorna.
18 Ja, ni ska också för min skull bli anklagade inför kungar och makthavare. Då får ni anledning att berätta för dem om mig - ja, att vittna för världen.
19 Men när ni ställs inför rätta och man förhör er behöver ni inte oroa er för vad ni ska säga, för ni ska få de rätta orden i rätt ögonblick.
20 Och det är inte ni som kommer att tala, utan er himmelske Fars ande ska tala genom er.
21 Bröder ska förråda varandra och låta döda varandra, och föräldrar ska förråda sina egna barn. Och barn kommer att göra uppror mot sina föräldrar och ta livet av dem.
22 Alla kommer att hata er därför att ni tillhör mig. Men de som håller ut till slutet ska bli frälsta.
23 När ni blir förföljda i en stad så fly till en annan. Men jag försäkrar er att Människosonen kommer att återvända innan ni hunnit till dem alla!
24 En elev är inte förmer än sin lärare, och en tjänare står inte över sin herre.
25 Och både eleven och tjänaren får lov att acceptera att det går med dem som med deras lärare och herre. När nu jag, husets herre, har kallats 'Satan
26 Men var inte rädda för dem som hotar er, för den dag kommer när sanningen ska komma fram! Deras hemliga sammansvärjningar kommer då att dras fram i offentlighetens ljus.
27 Vad jag nu säger er i mörkret ska ni ropa ut när dagen kommer. Och vad jag viskar i era öron ska ni ropa ut från hustaken!
28 Var inte rädda för dem som bara kan döda kroppen, men inte kan döda själen! Frukta bara Gud, som kan döda både kropp och själ i helvetet.
29 Inte en enda sparv, hur lite den än är värd, kan falla död till marken utan att er Far vet det.
30 Till och med vartenda hårstrå på era huvuden är räknade.
31 Oroa er alltså inte! För honom är ni mycket mer värda än många sparvar.
32 Om någon offentligt bekänner sig till mig ska jag försvara honom inför min Far i himlen.
33 Men om någon inte vill kännas vid mig, så ska inte heller jag kännas vid honom inför min Far i himlen.
34 Inbilla er inte att jag har kommit för att skapa frid på jorden! Nej, snarare tvärtom.
35 Jag kommer att orsaka splittring så att en son sätter sig upp mot sin far, en dotter mot sin mor, och en svärdotter mot sin svärmor.
36 De värsta fienderna kommer för många att finnas i deras egna hem!
37 Om ni älskar er far och mor mer än ni älskar mig, är ni inte värdiga att tillhöra mig. Och om ni älskar er son eller dotter mer än mig, är ni inte värdiga att tillhöra mig.
38 Och om ni vägrar att ta upp ert kors och följa mig, kan ni inte tillhöra mig.
39 Om ni klamrar er fast vid livet kommer ni till sist att förlora det, men om ni vågar ge det för min skull, kommer ni att rädda det.
40 De som tar emot er, tar emot mig. Och när de tar emot mig, tar de emot Gud som har sänt mig.
41 Om ni tar emot en profet, därför att han är en gudsman, kommer ni att få samma lön som profeten. Och om ni tar emot goda och rättfärdiga män som lever för Gud, ska ni få samma belöning som de.
42 Ja, om ni så bara ger ett glas friskt vatten till den minst ansedde av mina efterföljare, därför att han tillhör mig, så ska ni verkligen få lön för det.

Jesus Sends Out His Apostles(A)
10 Jesus called his twelve ·followers [disciples] together and gave them authority to drive [force; cast] out ·evil [defiling; L unclean] spirits and to heal every kind of disease and sickness. 2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; 4 Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who ·turned against [betrayed] Jesus.
5 Jesus sent out these twelve men with the following ·order [instructions]: “Don’t go ·to [L on the way/road of] the ·Gentiles [non-Jewish people] or ·to [L enter] any town where the Samaritans live. 6 But go to the ·people of Israel, who are like lost sheep [L lost sheep of the house of Israel]. 7 When you go, ·preach [announce; proclaim] this: ‘The kingdom of heaven is ·near [at hand].’ 8 Heal the sick, raise the dead to life again, ·heal [L cleanse] ·those who have skin diseases [T the lepers; see 8:2], and ·force demons out of people [L cast out demons]. ·I give you these powers freely, so help other people freely [L Freely you have received, freely give]. 9 Don’t ·carry [or acquire] any money ·with you [L in your belts]—gold or silver or copper. 10 Don’t carry a ·bag [traveler’s bag; or beggar’s purse] or ·extra clothes [L two tunics] or sandals or a ·walking stick [staff]. 16 “·Listen [L Look; T Behold], I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. So be as ·clever [wise; shrewd; cunning] as ·snakes [serpents] and as ·innocent [harmless] as doves. 17 ·Be careful of [Beware of; Watch out for] people, because they will ·arrest you and take you to court [hand you over to the courts/councils; C local councils associated with Jewish synagogues] and ·whip [flog; scourge] you in their synagogues. 18 ·Because of me [On my account; For my sake] you will be taken to stand before governors and kings, ·and you will tell them and the Gentiles about me [L as a witness/testimony to them and to the Gentiles]. 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about what to say or how to say it. [L For] At that time you will be given the things to say. 20 It will not really be you speaking but the Spirit of your Father speaking ·through [in] you.
21 “Brothers will ·give [betray; hand over] their own brothers to ·be killed [death], and fathers will give their own children to ·be killed [death]. Children will ·fight [rebel; rise up] against their own parents and have them put to death. 22 All people will hate you because ·you follow me [L of my name], but those people who ·keep their faith [endure; stand firm; persevere] until the end will be saved. 23 When you are ·treated badly [persecuted] in one city, ·run [flee] to ·another city [the next]. I tell you the truth, you will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes [Dan. 7:13–14].
24 “A ·student [disciple; follower] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his teacher, and a ·servant [slave] is not ·better than [superior to; L above] his ·master [lord]. 25 ·A student should be satisfied [L It is enough for a student/disciple/follower] to become like his teacher; ·a servant should be satisfied to become [L and a servant/slave] like his master. If the head of the family [C here referring to Jesus] is called Beelzebul [C another name for Satan], ·then the other members of the family will be called worse names [L how much more the members of his household]!
Fear God, Not People(C)
26 “So don’t be afraid of those people, because everything that is ·hidden [concealed; covered up] will be ·shown [revealed; uncovered; disclosed]. Everything that is ·secret [hidden] will be made ·known [clear]. 27 I tell you these things in the dark, but I want you to tell them in the ·light [daylight]. What you hear whispered in your ear you should ·shout [proclaim] from the housetops. 28 Don’t be afraid of people, who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. The only one you should fear is the one who can destroy [L both] the soul and the body in ·hell [L Gehenna; 5:22]. 29 Two sparrows are sold [L Are not two sparrows sold…?] for only a penny [C Greek: assarion; a copper coin of very low value], but not even one of them can ·die [L fall to the ground] ·without your Father’s knowing it [or apart from your Father’s will]. 30 God even ·knows [numbers; counts] how many hairs are on your head. 31 So don’t be afraid. 32 “All those who ·stand before others and say they believe in me [L confess/acknowledge me before people], I will ·say before my Father in heaven that they belong to me [L confess/acknowledge them before my Father in heaven]. 33 But all who ·stand before others and say they do not believe in me [L deny/disown me before people] I will ·say before my Father in heaven that they do not belong to me [L also deny/disown them before my Father in heaven].
Divisions Within Households(D)
34 “Don’t ·think [suppose] that I came to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 [L For] I have come ·so that
‘a son will be [L to turn a man] against his father,
a daughter ·will be against [against] her mother,
a daughter-in-law ·will be against [against] her mother-in-law.
36 A person’s enemies will be members of his own ·family [household; Mic. 7:6].’
Conditions and Rewards of Discipleship(E)
37 “·Those who love [L The one who loves…] their father or mother more than they love me are not worthy ·to be my followers [L of me]. Those who love their son or daughter more than they love me are not worthy ·to be my followers [L of me]. 38 Whoever ·is not willing to carry the [L does not take up his] cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Those who ·try to hold on to [cling to; seek to preserve; L find] their lives will ·give up true life [lose them]. 9 “Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L)— 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)
16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.
21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)
24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!
26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? “‘a man against his father,
a daughter against her mother,

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)
40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)

10 And when he had called unto him his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;
3 Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the publican; James the son of Alphaeus, and Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus;
4 Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.
5 These twelve Jesus sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go not into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7 And as ye go, preach, saying, The kingdom of heaven is at hand.
8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give.
9 Provide neither gold, nor silver, nor brass in your purses,
10 Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat.
11 And into whatsoever city or town ye shall enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there abide till ye go thence.
12 And when ye come into an house, salute it.
13 And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
14 And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
15 Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.
16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues;
18 And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.
19 But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak.
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.
21 And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.
22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.
25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.
27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.
28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.
