27 Men när det hade blivit morgon, fattade alla översteprästerna och folkets äldste det beslutet angående Jesus, att de skulle döda honom.
2 Och de läto binda honom och förde honom bort och överlämnade honom åt Pilatus, landshövdingen.
3 När då Judas, som hade förrått honom, såg att han var dömd, ångrade han sig och bar de trettio silverpenningarna tillbaka till översteprästerna och de äldste
4 och sade: »Jag har syndat därigenom att jag har förrått oskyldigt blod.» Men de svarade: »Vad kommer det oss vid? Du får själv svara därför.»
5 Då kastade han silverpenningarna i templet och gick sin väg. Sedan gick han bort och hängde sig.
6 Men översteprästerna togo silverpenningarna och sade: »Det är icke lovligt att lägga dem i offerkistan, eftersom det är blodspenningar.»
7 Och sedan de hade fattat sitt beslut, köpte de för dem Krukmakaråkern till begravningsplats för främlingar.
8 Därför kallas den åkern ännu i dag Blodsåkern.
9 Så fullbordades det som var sagt genom profeten Jeremias, när han sade: »Och jag tog de trettio silverpenningarna -- priset för den man vilkens värde hade blivit bestämt, den som israelitiska män hade värderat --
10 och jag gav dem till betalning för Krukmakaråkern, i enlighet med Herrens befallning till mig.»
11 Men Jesus ställdes fram inför landshövdingen. Och landshövdingen frågade honom och sade: »Är du judarnas konung?» Jesus svarade honom: »Du säger det själv.»
12 Men när översteprästerna och de äldste framställde sina anklagelser mot honom, svarade han intet.
13 Då sade Pilatus till honom: »Hör du icke huru mycket de hava att vittna mot dig?»
14 Men han svarade honom icke på en enda fråga, så att landshövdingen mycket förundrade sig.
15 Nu var det sed att landshövdingen vid högtiden gav folket en fånge lös, vilken de ville.
16 Och man hade då en beryktad fånge, som hette Barabbas.
17 När de nu voro församlade, frågade Pilatus dem: »Vilken viljen I att jag skall giva eder lös, Barabbas eller Jesus, som kallas Messias?»
18 Han visste nämligen att det var av avund som man hade dragit Jesus inför rätta.
19 Och medan han satt på domarsätet, hade hans hustru sänt bud till honom och låtit säga: »Befatta dig icke med denne rättfärdige man; ty jag har i natt lidit mycket i drömmen för hans skull.»
20 Men översteprästerna och de äldste hade övertalat folket att begära Barabbas och låta förgöra Jesus.
21 När alltså landshövdingen nu frågade dem och sade: »Vilken av de två viljen I att jag skall giva eder lös?», så svarade de: »Barabbas.»
22 Då frågade Pilatus dem: »Vad skall jag då göra med Jesus, som kallas Messias?» De svarade alla: »Låt korsfästa honom.»
23 Men han frågade: »Vad ont har han då gjort?» Då skriade de ännu ivrigare: »Låt korsfästa honom.»
24 När nu Pilatus såg att han intet kunde uträtta, utan att larmet blev allt starkare, lät han hämta vatten och tvådde sina händer i folkets åsyn och sade: »Jag är oskyldig till denne mans blod. I fån själva svara därför.»
25 Och allt folket svarade och sade: »Hans blod komme över oss och över våra barn.»
26 Då gav han dem Barabbas lös; men Jesus lät han gissla och utlämnade honom sedan till att korsfästas.
27 Då togo landshövdingens krigsmän Jesus med sig in i pretoriet och församlade hela den romerska vakten omkring honom.
28 Och de togo av honom hans kläder och satte på honom en röd mantel
29 och vredo samman en krona av törnen och satte den på hans huvud, och i hans högra hand satte de ett rör. Sedan böjde de knä inför honom och begabbade honom och sade: »Hell dig, judarnas konung!»
30 Och de spottade på honom och togo röret och slogo honom därmed i huvudet.
31 Och när de så hade begabbat honom, klädde de av honom manteln och satte på honom hans egna kläder och förde honom bort till att korsfästas.
32 Då de nu voro på väg ditut, träffade de på en man från Cyrene, som hette Simon. Honom tvingade de att gå med och bära hans kors.
33 Och när de hade kommit till en plats som kallades Golgata (det betyder huvudskalleplats),
34 räckte de honom vin att dricka, blandat med galla; men då han hade smakat därpå, ville han icke dricka det.
35 Och när de hade korsfäst honom, delade de hans kläder mellan sig genom att kasta lott om dem.
36 Sedan sutto de där och höllo vakt om honom.
37 Och över hans huvud hade man satt upp en överskrift, som angav vad han var anklagad för, och den lydde så: »Denne är Jesus, judarnas konung.»
38 Med honom korsfästes då ock två rövare, den ene på högra sidan och den andre på vänstra.
39 Och de som gingo där förbi bespottade honom och skakade huvudet
40 och sade: »Du som bryter ned templet och inom tre dagar bygger upp det igen, hjälp dig nu själv, om du är Guds Son, och stig ned från korset.»
41 Sammalunda talade ock översteprästerna, jämte de skriftlärde och de äldste, begabbande ord och sade:
42 »Andra har han hjälpt; sig själv kan han icke hjälpa. Han är ju Israels konung; han stige nu ned från korset, så vilja vi tro på honom.
43 Han har satt sin förtröstan på Gud, må nu han frälsa honom, om han har behag till honom, han har ju sagt: 'Jag är Guds Son.'»
44 På samma sätt smädade honom också rövarna som voro korsfästa med honom.
45 Men vid sjätte timmen kom över hela landet ett mörker, som varade ända till nionde timmen.
46 Och vid nionde timmen ropade Jesus med hög röst och sade: »Eli, Eli, lema sabaktani?»; det betyder: »Min Gud, min Gud, varför har du övergivit mig?»
47 Men när några av dem som stodo där borde detta, sade de: »Han kallar på Elias.»
48 Och strax skyndade en av dem fram och tog en svamp och fyllde den med ättikvin och satte den på ett rör och gav honom att dricka.
49 Men de andra sade: »Låt oss se om Elias kommer och hjälper honom.»
50 Åter ropade Jesus med hög röst och gav upp andan.
51 Och se, då rämnade förlåten i templet i två stycken, uppifrån och ända ned, och jorden skalv, och klipporna rämnade,
52 och gravarna öppnades, och många avsomnade heligas kroppar stodo upp.
53 De gingo ut ur sina gravar och kommo efter hans uppståndelse in i den heliga staden och uppenbarade sig för många.
54 Men när hövitsmannen och de som med honom höllo vakt om Jesus sågo jordbävningen och det övriga som skedde, blevo de mycket förskräckta och sade: »Förvisso var denne Guds Son.»
55 Och många kvinnor som hade följt Jesus från Galileen och tjänat honom, stodo där på avstånd och sågo vad som skedde.
56 Bland dessa voro Maria från Magdala och den Maria som var Jakobs och Joses' moder, så ock Sebedeus' söners moder.
57 Men när det hade blivit afton, kom en rik man från Arimatea, vid namn Josef, som ock hade blivit en Jesu lärjunge;
58 denne gick till Pilatus och utbad sig att få Jesu kropp. Då bjöd Pilatus att man skulle lämna ut den åt honom.
59 Och Josef tog hans kropp och svepte den i en ren linneduk
60 och lade den i den nya grav som han hade låtit hugga ut åt sig i klippan; och sedan han hade vältrat en stor sten för ingången till graven, gick han därifrån.
61 Men Maria från Magdala och den andra Maria voro där, och de sutto gent emot graven.
62 Följande dag, som var dagen efter tillredelsedagen, församlade sig översteprästerna och fariséerna och gingo till Pilatus
63 och sade: »Herre, vi hava dragit oss till minnes att den villoläraren sade, medan han ännu levde: 'Efter tre dagar skall jag uppstå.'
64 Bjud fördenskull att man skyddar graven intill tredje dagen, så att hans lärjungar icke komma och stjäla bort honom, och sedan säga till folket att han har uppstått från de döda. Då bliver den sista villan värre än den första.»
65 Pilatus svarade dem: »Där haven I vakt; gån åstad och skydden graven så gott I kunnen.»
66 Och de gingo åstad och skyddade graven, i det att de icke allenast satte ut vakten, utan ock förseglade stenen.

27 Y VENIDA la mañana, entraron en consejo todos los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y los ancianos del pueblo, contra Jesús, para entregarle á muerte.
2 Y le llevaron atado, y le entregaron á Poncio Pilato presidente.
3 Entonces Judas, el que le había entregado, viendo que era condenado, volvió arrepentido las treinta piezas de plata á los príncipes de los sacerdotes y á los ancianos,
4 Diciendo: Yo he pecado entregando la sangre inocente. Mas ellos dijeron: ¿Qué se nos da á nosotros? Viéraslo tú.
5 Y arrojando las piezas de plata en el templo, partióse; y fué, y se ahorcó.
6 Y los príncipes de los sacerdotes, tomando las piezas de plata, dijeron: No es lícito echarlas en el tesoro de los dones, porque es precio de sangre.
7 Mas habido consejo, compraron con ellas el campo del alfarero, por sepultura para los extranjeros.
8 Por lo cual fué llamado aquel campo, Campo de sangre, hasta el día de hoy.
9 Entonces se cumplió lo que fué dicho por el profeta Jeremías, que dijo: Y tomaron las treinta piezas de plata, precio del apreciado, que fué apreciado por los hijos de Israel;
10 Y las dieron para el campo del alfarero, como me ordenó el Señor.
11 Y Jesús estuvo delante del presidente; y el presidente le preguntó, diciendo: ¿Eres tú el Rey de los judíos? Y Jesús le dijo: Tú lo dices.
12 Y siendo acusado por los príncipes de los sacerdotes, y por los ancianos, nada respondió.
13 Pilato entonces le dice: ¿No oyes cuántas cosas testifican contra ti?
14 Y no le respondió ni una palabra; de tal manera que el presidente se maravillaba mucho,
15 Y en el día de la fiesta acostumbraba el presidente soltar al pueblo un preso, cual quisiesen.
16 Y tenían entonces un preso famoso que se llamaba Barrabás.
17 Y juntos ellos, les dijo Pilato: ¿Cuál queréis que os suelte? ¿á Barrabás ó á Jesús que se dice el Cristo?
18 Porque sabía que por envidia le habían entregado.
19 Y estando él sentado en el tribunal, su mujer envió á él, diciendo: No tengas que ver con aquel justo; porque hoy he padecido muchas cosas en sueños por causa de él.
20 Mas los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los ancianos, persuadieron al pueblo que pidiese á Barrabás, y á Jesús matase.
21 Y respondiendo el presidente les dijo: ¿Cuál de los dos queréis que os suelte? Y ellos dijeron: á Barrabás.
22 Pilato les dijo: ¿Qué pues haré de Jesús que se dice el Cristo? Dícenle todos: Sea crucificado.
23 Y el presidente les dijo: Pues ¿qué mal ha hecho? Mas ellos gritaban más, diciendo: Sea crucificado.
24 Y viendo Pilato que nada adelantaba, antes se hacía más alboroto, tomando agua se lavó las manos delante del pueblo, diciendo: Inocente soy yo de la sangre de este justo veréislo vosotros.
25 Y respondiendo todo el pueblo, dijo: Su sangre sea sobre nosotros, y sobre nuestros hijos.
26 Entonces les soltó á Barrabás: y habiendo azotado á Jesús, le entregó para ser crucificado.
27 Entonces los soldados del presidente llevaron á Jesús al pretorio, y juntaron á él toda la cuadrilla;
28 Y desnudándole, le echaron encima un manto de grana;
29 Y pusieron sobre su cabeza una corona tejida de espinas, y una caña en su mano derecha; é hincando la rodilla delante de él, le burlaban, diciendo: ¡Salve, Rey de los Judíos!
30 Y escupiendo en él, tomaron la caña, y le herían en la cabeza.
31 Y después que le hubieron escarnecido, le desnudaron el manto, y le vistieron de sus vestidos, y le llevaron para crucificarle.
32 Y saliendo, hallaron á un Cireneo, que se llamaba Simón: á éste cargaron para que llevase su cruz.
33 Y como llegaron al lugar que se llamaba Gólgotha, que es dicho, El lugar de la calavera,
34 Le dieron á beber vinagre mezclado con hiel: y gustando, no quiso beberlo
35 Y después que le hubieron crucificado, repartieron sus vestidos, echando suertes: para que se cumpliese lo que fué dicho por el profeta: Se repartieron mis vestidos, y sobre mi ropa echaron suertes.
36 Y sentados le guardaban allí.
37 Y pusieron sobre su cabeza su causa escrita: ESTE ES JESUS EL REY DE LOS JUDIOS.
38 Entonces crucificaron con él dos ladrones, uno á la derecha, y otro á la izquierda.
39 Y los que pasaban, le decían injurias, meneando sus cabezas,
40 Y diciendo: Tú, el que derribas el templo, y en tres días lo reedificas, sálvate á ti mismo: si eres Hijo de Dios, desciende de la cruz.
41 De esta manera también los príncipes de los sacerdotes, escarneciendo con los escribas y los Fariseos y los ancianos, decían:
42 A otros salvó, á sí mismo no puede salvar: si es el Rey de Israel, descienda ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en él.
43 Confió en Dios: líbrele ahora si le quiere: porque ha dicho: Soy Hijo de Dios.
44 Lo mismo también le zaherían los ladrones que estaban crucificados con él.
45 Y desde la hora de sexta fueron tinieblas sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora de nona.
46 Y cerca de la hora de nona, Jesús exclamó con grande voz, diciendo: Eli, Eli, ¿lama sabachtani? Esto es: Dios mío, Dios mío, ¿por qué me has desamparado?
47 Y algunos de los que estaban allí, oyéndolo, decían: á Elías llama éste.
48 Y luego, corriendo uno de ellos, tomó una esponja, y la hinchió de vinagre, y poniéndola en una caña, dábale de beber.
49 Y los otros decían: Deja, veamos si viene Elías á librarle.
50 Mas Jesús, habiendo otra vez exclamado con grande voz, dió el espíritu.
51 Y he aquí, el velo del templo se rompió en dos, de alto á bajo: y la tierra tembló, y las piedras se hendieron;
52 Y abriéronse los sepulcros, y muchos cuerpos de santos que habían dormido, se levantaron;
53 Y salidos de los sepulcros, después de su resurrección, vinieron á la santa ciudad, y aparecieron á muchos.
54 Y el centurión, y los que estaban con él guardando á Jesús, visto el terremoto, y las cosas que habían sido hechas, temieron en gran manera, diciendo: Verdaderamente Hijo de Dios era éste.
55 Y estaban allí muchas mujeres mirando de lejos, las cuales habían seguido de Galilea á Jesús, sirviéndole:
56 Entre las cuales estaban María Magdalena, y María la madre de Jacobo y de José, y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo.
57 Y como fué la tarde del día, vino un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, el cual también había sido discípulo de Jesús.
58 Este llegó á Pilato, y pidió el cuerpo de Jesús: entonces Pilato mandó que se le diese el cuerpo.
59 Y tomando José el cuerpo, lo envolvió en una sábana limpia,
60 Y lo puso en su sepulcro nuevo, que había labrado en la peña: y revuelta una grande piedra á la puerta del sepulcro, se fué.
61 Y estaban allí María Magdalena, y la otra María, sentadas delante del sepulcro.
62 Y el siguiente día, que es después de la preparación, se juntaron los príncipes de los sacerdotes y los Fariseos á Pilato,
63 Diciendo: Señor, nos acordamos que aquel engañador dijo, viviendo aún: Después de tres días resucitaré.
64 Manda, pues, que se asegure el sepulcro hasta el día tercero; porque no vengan sus discípulos de noche, y le hurten, y digan al pueblo: Resucitó de los muertos. Y será el postrer error peor que el primero.
65 Y Pilato les dijo: Tenéis una guardia: id, aseguradlo como sabéis.
66 Y yendo ellos, aseguraron el sepulcro, sellando la piedra, con la guardia.

Jesus Handed Over to Pontius Pilate(A)
27 When morning came, (B)all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death. 2 And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and (C)delivered Him to [a]Pontius Pilate the governor.
Judas Hangs Himself(D)
3 (E)Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was remorseful and brought back the thirty (F)pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.”
And they said, “What is that to us? You see to it!”
5 Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and (G)departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood.” 7 And they consulted together and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8 Therefore that field has been called (H)the Field of Blood to this day.
9 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, (I)“And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, 10 and (J)gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”
Jesus Faces Pilate(K)
11 Now Jesus stood before the governor. (L)And the governor asked Him, saying, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
Jesus said to him, (M)“It is as you say.” 12 And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, (N)He answered nothing.
13 Then Pilate said to Him, (O)“Do You not hear how many things they testify against You?” 14 But He answered him not one word, so that the governor marveled greatly.
Taking the Place of Barabbas(P)
15 (Q)Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. 16 And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called [b]Barabbas. 17 Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of (R)envy.
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”
20 (S)But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas and destroy Jesus. 21 The governor answered and said to them, “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?”
They said, (T)“Barabbas!”
22 Pilate said to them, “What then shall I do with Jesus who is called Christ?”
They all said to him, “Let Him be crucified!”
23 Then the governor said, (U)“Why, what evil has He done?”
But they cried out all the more, saying, “Let Him be crucified!”
24 When Pilate saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a [c]tumult was rising, he (V)took water and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, “I am innocent of the blood of this [d]just Person. You see to it.”
25 And all the people answered and said, (W)“His blood be on us and on our children.”
26 Then he released Barabbas to them; and when (X)he had [e]scourged Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(Y)
27 (Z)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the [f]Praetorium and gathered the whole [g]garrison around Him. 28 And they (AA)stripped Him and (AB)put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 (AC)When they had [h]twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then (AD)they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, (AE)and led Him away to be crucified.
The King on a Cross(AF)
32 (AG)Now as they came out, (AH)they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. Him they compelled to bear His cross. 33 (AI)And when they had come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, Place of a Skull, 34 (AJ)they gave Him [i]sour wine mingled with gall to drink. But when He had tasted it, He would not drink.
35 (AK)Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, [j]that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet:
(AL)“They divided My garments among them,
And for My clothing they cast lots.”
36 (AM)Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. 37 And they (AN)put up over His head the accusation written against Him:
THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.
38 (AO)Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right and another on the left.
39 And (AP)those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, (AQ)“You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! (AR)If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”
41 Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the [k]scribes and elders, said, 42 “He (AS)saved others; Himself He cannot save. [l]If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe [m]Him. 43 (AT)He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
44 (AU)Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.
Jesus Dies on the Cross(AV)
45 (AW)Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. 46 And about the ninth hour (AX)Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, (AY)“My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”
47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, (AZ)filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.
49 The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”
50 And Jesus (BA)cried out again with a loud voice, and (BB)yielded up His spirit.
51 Then, behold, (BC)the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 (BD)So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, (BE)“Truly this was the Son of God!”
55 And many women (BF)who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to Him, were there looking on from afar, 56 (BG)among whom were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and [n]Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.
Jesus Buried in Joseph’s Tomb(BH)
57 Now (BI)when evening had come, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus. 58 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be given to him. 59 When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and (BJ)laid it in his new tomb which he had hewn out of the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the door of the tomb, and departed. 61 And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting [o]opposite the tomb.
Pilate Sets a Guard
62 On the next day, which followed the Day of Preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees gathered together to Pilate, 63 saying, “Sir, we remember, while He was still alive, how that deceiver said, (BK)‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore command that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest His disciples come [p]by night and steal Him away, and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead.’ So the last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard; go your way, make it as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure, (BL)sealing the stone and setting the guard.

Judas Hangs Himself
27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(A) 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(B) to Pilate the governor.(C)
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)
Jesus Before Pilate(L)
11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(M)
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)
32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(AZ)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)
The Burial of Jesus(BL)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)

Jesús es entregado a Pilato
27 Cuando llegó la mañana, todos los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos del pueblo celebraron consejo(A) para dar muerte a Jesús. 2 Y después de atar a Jesús, lo llevaron y lo entregaron(B) a Pilato, el gobernador(C).
Muerte de Judas
3 Entonces Judas(D), el que lo había entregado, viendo que Jesús había sido condenado, sintió remordimiento y devolvió las treinta monedas de plata (30 siclos: 432 gramos de plata)(E) a los principales sacerdotes y a los ancianos, 4 «He pecado entregando sangre inocente», dijo Judas. «A nosotros, ¿qué? ¡Allá tú[a](F)!», dijeron ellos.
5 Y arrojando las monedas de plata en el santuario(G), Judas se marchó; y fue y se ahorcó(H). 6 Los principales sacerdotes tomaron las monedas de plata, y dijeron: «No es lícito ponerlas en el tesoro del templo, puesto que es precio de sangre». 7 Y después de discutirlo, compraron con ellas el Campo del Alfarero para sepultura de los extranjeros. 8 Por eso ese campo se ha llamado Campo de Sangre(I) hasta hoy. 9 Entonces se cumplió lo anunciado[b] por medio del profeta Jeremías, cuando dijo: «(J)Y tomaron[c] las treinta monedas de plata, el precio de aquel cuyo precio había sido fijado por los israelitas; 10 y las dieron[d] por el Campo del Alfarero, como el Señor me había ordenado».
Jesús ante Pilato
11 (K)Jesús fue llevado delante del gobernador[e], y este[f] lo interrogó: «¿Eres Tú el Rey de los judíos(L)?». «Tú lo dices(M)», le contestó Jesús. 12 Al ser acusado por los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos, nada respondió(N). 13 Entonces Pilato le dijo*: «¿No oyes cuántas cosas testifican contra Ti?». 14 Jesús no le respondió ni a una sola pregunta[g], por lo que el gobernador estaba muy asombrado(O).
Jesús o Barrabás
15 (P)Ahora bien, en cada fiesta, el gobernador acostumbraba soltar un preso al pueblo, el que ellos quisieran. 16 Tenían entonces un preso famoso, llamado Barrabás. 17 Por lo cual, cuando ellos se reunieron, Pilato les dijo: «¿A quién quieren que les suelte: a Barrabás o a Jesús, llamado el Cristo(Q)?». 18 Porque él sabía que lo habían entregado por envidia. 19 Y estando Pilato sentado en el tribunal(R), su mujer le mandó aviso, diciendo: «No tengas nada que ver con ese Justo(S), porque hoy he sufrido mucho en sueños(T) por causa de Él».
20 Pero los principales sacerdotes y los ancianos persuadieron a las multitudes que pidieran a Barrabás y que dieran muerte a Jesús(U). 21 El gobernador les preguntó de nuevo: «¿A cuál de los dos quieren que les suelte?». Ellos respondieron: «A Barrabás». 22 Pilato les dijo*: «¿Qué haré entonces con Jesús, llamado el Cristo(V)?». «¡Sea crucificado!», dijeron* todos. 23 Pilato preguntó: «¿Por qué? ¿Qué mal ha hecho?». Pero ellos gritaban aún más: «¡Sea crucificado!».
24 Viendo Pilato que no conseguía nada, sino que más bien se estaba formando un tumulto(W), tomó agua y se lavó las manos delante de la multitud, diciendo: «Soy inocente de la sangre(X) de este Justo[h](Y). ¡Allá ustedes[i](Z)!». 25 Todo el pueblo contestó: «¡Caiga Su sangre sobre nosotros(AA) y sobre nuestros hijos!». 26 Entonces les soltó a Barrabás, y después de hacer azotar a Jesús, lo entregó para que fuera crucificado(AB).
Los soldados se burlan de Jesús
27 (AC)Entonces los soldados del gobernador llevaron a Jesús al Pretorio[j](AD), y reunieron alrededor de Él a toda la tropa[k](AE) romana. 28 Después de quitarle la ropa, le pusieron encima un manto escarlata(AF). 29 Y tejiendo una corona de espinas, la pusieron sobre Su cabeza(AG), y una caña[l] en Su mano derecha; y arrodillándose delante de Él, le hacían burla, diciendo: «¡Salve, Rey de los judíos(AH)!». 30 Le escupían(AI), y tomaban la caña y lo golpeaban en la cabeza. 31 Después de haberse burlado de Él, le quitaron el manto, le pusieron Sus ropas y lo llevaron para ser crucificado(AJ).
32 (AK)Y cuando salían, hallaron a un hombre de Cirene(AL) llamado Simón, al cual[m] obligaron a que llevara Su cruz.
La crucifixión
33 (AM)Cuando llegaron a un lugar llamado Gólgota, que significa Lugar de la Calavera(AN), 34 Le dieron a beber vino mezclado con hiel(AO); pero después de probarlo, no lo quiso beber(AP).
35 Y habiendo crucificado a Jesús, se repartieron Sus vestidos echando suertes[n](AQ); 36 y sentados, lo custodiaban allí(AR). 37 Pusieron sobre Su cabeza la acusación contra Él, que decía[o]: «ESTE ES JESÚS, EL REY DE LOS JUDÍOS(AS)».
38 Entonces fueron crucificados* con Él dos ladrones, uno a la derecha y otro a la izquierda. 39 Los que pasaban lo injuriaban, meneando la cabeza(AT) 40 y diciendo: «Tú que destruyes el templo y en tres días lo reedificas(AU), sálvate a Ti mismo. Si Tú eres el Hijo de Dios, desciende de la cruz(AV)».
41 De igual manera, también los principales sacerdotes, junto con los escribas y los ancianos, burlándose de Él, decían: 42 «A otros salvó; a Él mismo no puede salvarse[p](AW). Rey de Israel es(AX); que baje ahora de la cruz, y creeremos en Él. 43 En Dios confía; que lo libre ahora si Él lo quiere(AY); porque ha dicho: “Yo soy el Hijo de Dios”». 44 En la misma forma lo injuriaban también los ladrones que habían sido crucificados con Él(AZ).
Muerte de Jesús
45 (BA)Desde la hora sexta[q] hubo oscuridad sobre toda la tierra hasta la hora novena[r]. 46 Y alrededor de la hora novena[s], Jesús exclamó a gran voz, diciendo: «Elí, Elí, ¿lema sabactani?». Esto es: «Dios Mío, Dios Mío, ¿por qué me has abandonado(BB)?».
47 Algunos de los que estaban allí, al oírlo, decían: «Este llama a Elías». 48 Al instante, uno de ellos corrió, y tomando una esponja, la empapó en vinagre, y poniéndola en una caña, le dio a beber(BC). 49 Pero los otros dijeron: «Deja, veamos si Elías lo viene a salvar[t]».
50 Entonces Jesús, clamando otra vez a gran voz, exhaló el espíritu(BD).
51 (BE)En ese momento el velo del templo se rasgó en dos, de arriba abajo(BF), y la tierra tembló(BG) y las rocas se partieron; 52 y los sepulcros se abrieron, y los cuerpos de muchos santos que habían dormido(BH) resucitaron; 53 y saliendo de los sepulcros, después de la resurrección de Jesús, entraron en la santa ciudad(BI) y se aparecieron a muchos.
54 El centurión y los que estaban con él custodiando a Jesús(BJ), cuando vieron el terremoto(BK) y las cosas que sucedían, se asustaron mucho, y dijeron: «En verdad este era Hijo de Dios[u](BL)». 55 Y muchas mujeres(BM) que habían seguido a Jesús desde Galilea para servirle(BN), estaban allí, mirando de lejos. 56 Entre ellas estaban María Magdalena, María la madre de Jacobo y de José(BO), y la madre de los hijos de Zebedeo(BP).
Sepultura de Jesús
57 (BQ)Al atardecer, vino un hombre rico de Arimatea, llamado José, que también se había convertido en discípulo de Jesús. 58 Este se presentó a Pilato y le pidió el cuerpo de Jesús. Entonces Pilato ordenó que se lo entregaran. 59 Tomando José el cuerpo, lo envolvió en un lienzo limpio de lino, 60 y lo puso en su propio sepulcro nuevo que él había excavado en la roca. Después de rodar una piedra grande(BR) a la entrada del sepulcro, se fue. 61 María Magdalena estaba allí, y la otra María(BS), sentadas frente al sepulcro.
Guardias en la tumba
62 Al día siguiente, que es el día después de la preparación[v](BT), se reunieron ante Pilato los principales sacerdotes y los fariseos, 63 y le dijeron[w]: «Señor, nos acordamos que cuando aquel engañador aún vivía, dijo: “Después de tres días resucitaré[x](BU)”. 64 Por eso, ordene usted que el sepulcro quede asegurado hasta el tercer día, no sea que vengan Sus discípulos, se lo roben, y digan al pueblo: “Él ha resucitado de entre los muertos”; y el último engaño será peor que el primero».
65 Pilato les dijo: «Una guardia(BV) tienen; vayan, asegúrenlo como ustedes saben». 66 Y fueron y aseguraron el sepulcro; y además de poner la guardia(BW), sellaron(BX) la piedra(BY).
