16 Och fariséerna och sadducéerna kommo dit och ville sätta honom på prov; de begärde att han skulle låta dem se något tecken från himmelen.
2 Men han svarade och sade till dem: »Om aftonen sägen I: 'Det bliver klart väder, ty himmelen är röd',
3 och om morgonen: 'Det bliver oväder i dag, ty himmelen är mulen och röd.' Ja, om himmelens utseende förstån I att döma, men om tidernas tecken kunnen I icke döma.
4 Ett ont och trolöst släkte är detta! Det åstundar ett tecken, men intet annat tecken skall givas det än Jonas' tecken.» Och så lämnade han dem och gick sin väg.
5 När sedan lärjungarna foro åstad, över till andra stranden, hade de förgätit att taga med sig bröd.
6 Och Jesus sade till dem: »Sen till, att I tagen eder till vara för fariséernas och sadducéernas surdeg.»
7 Då talade de med varandra och sade: »Det är därför att vi icke hava tagit med oss bröd.»
8 Men när Jesus märkte detta, sade han: »I klentrogne, varför talen I eder emellan om att I icke haven bröd med eder?
9 Förstån I ännu ingenting? Och kommen I icke ihåg de fem bröden åt de fem tusen, och huru många korgar I då togen upp?
10 Ej heller de sju bröden åt de fyra tusen, och huru många korgar I då togen upp?
11 Huru kommer det då till, att I icke förstån att det ej var om bröd som jag talade till eder? Tagen eder till vara för fariséernas och sadducéernas surdeg.»
12 Då förstodo de att det icke var för surdeg i bröd som han hade bjudit dem att taga sig till vara, utan för fariséernas och sadducéernas lära.
13 Men när Jesus kom till trakten av Cesarea Filippi, frågade han sina lärjungar och sade: »Vem säger folket Människosonen vara?»
14 De svarade: »Somliga säga Johannes döparen, andra Elias, andra åter Jeremias eller en annan av profeterna.»
15 Då frågade han dem: »Vem sägen då I mig vara?»
16 Simon Petrus svarade och sade: »Du är Messias, den levande Gudens Son.»
17 Då svarade Jesus och sade till honom: »Salig är du, Simon, Jonas' son; ty kött och blod har icke uppenbarat detta för dig, utan min Fader, som är i himmelen.
18 Så säger ock jag dig att du är Petrus; och på denna klippa skall jag bygga min församling, och dödsrikets portar skola icke bliva henne övermäktiga.
19 Jag skall giva dig himmelrikets nycklar: allt vad du binder på jorden, det skall vara bundet i himmelen; och allt vad du löser på jorden, det skall vara löst i himmelen.»
20 Därefter förbjöd han lärjungarna att för någon säga att han var Messias.
21 Från den tiden begynte Jesus förklara för sina lärjungar, att han måste gå till Jerusalem och lida mycket av de äldste och översteprästerna och de skriftlärde, och att han skulle bliva dödad, men att han på tredje dagen skulle uppstå igen.
22 Då tog Petrus honom avsides och begynte ivrigt motsäga honom och sade: »Bevare dig Gud, Herre! Ingalunda får detta vederfaras dig.»
23 Men han vände sig om och sade till Petrus: »Gå bort, Satan, och stå mig icke i vägen; du är för mig en stötesten, ty dina tankar äro icke Guds tankar, utan människotankar.»
24 Därefter sade Jesus till sina lärjungar: »Om någon vill efterfölja mig, så försake han sig själv och tage sitt kors på sig: så följe han mig.
25 Ty den som vill bevara sitt liv, han skall mista det; men den som mister sitt liv, för min skull, han skall finna det.
26 Och vad hjälper det en människa, om hon vinner hela världen, men förlorar sin själ? Eller vad kan en människa giva till lösen för sin själ?
27 Människosonen skall komma i sin Faders härlighet med sina änglar, och då skall han vedergälla var och en efter hans gärningar.
28 Sannerligen säger jag eder: Bland dem som här stå finnas några som icke skola smaka döden, förrän de få se Människosonen komma i sitt rike.»

De religiösa ledarna begär ett tecken från himlen
16 En dag kom fariseerna och saddukeerna för att sätta Jesus på prov och krävde att han med under och tecken skulle bevisa sitt gudomliga uppdrag.
2-3 Han svarade: Ni är bra på att spå väder: röd himmel på kvällen betyder vackert väder på morgonen, men röd himmel på morgonen betyder dåligt väder hela dagen. Men det som i dag sker framför ögonen på er kan ni inte bedöma.
4 Detta onda, gudlösa folk kräver alltid tecken från Gud, men det kommer inte att få se något annat tecken än det profeten Jona fick se. Sedan lämnade Jesus dem och gick därifrån.
Jesus varnar för felaktig undervisning
5 När de kom fram till andra sidan sjön upptäckte lärjungarna att de hade glömt att ta med sig mat.
6 Var försiktiga, varnade Jesus dem. Se upp med den jäst som fariseerna och saddukeerna har.
7 De trodde att han sa detta därför att de hade glömt att ta med sig bröd.
8 Jesus förstod naturligtvis vad de tänkte och sa till dem: Vilken svag tro ni har! Varför är ni så oroliga för att ni inte har någon mat?
9 Ska ni aldrig lära er att förstå detta? Kommer ni inte alls ihåg de fem tusen jag mättade med fem brödstycken och de korgar som blev över?
10 Eller de fyra tusen jag mättade och all mat som blev över?
11 Hur kan ni ens tro att jag talade om mat? Men jag säger till er igen: Se upp med fariseernas och saddukeernas jäst.
12 Då förstod de äntligen att han med jäst menade fariseernas och saddukeernas falska undervisning.
Petrus erkänner Jesus som Messias
13 När Jesus kom till Caesarea Filippi frågade han sina lärjungar: Vem säger människorna att jag är?
14 De svarade: En del säger Johannes döparen, andra Elia, andra Jeremia eller någon annan av profeterna.
15 Då frågade han: Vem tror ni att jag är?
16 Simon Petrus svarade: Du är Messias, den levande Gudens Son.
17 Du kan verkligen känna dig lycklig, Simon, Jonas son, sa Jesus. Min Far i himlen har själv uppenbarat detta för dig. Ingen kommer till insikt om det själv.
18 Du är Petrus, en klippa, och på den klippan kommer jag att bygga min församling. Inte ens helvetets makter ska kunna besegra den.
19 Och jag ska ge dig himmelrikets nycklar. De dörrar du låser på jorden ska låsas i himlen. Och de dörrar du öppnar på jorden kommer att öppnas i himlen!
20 Sedan förbjöd han lärjungarna att berätta för andra att han var Messias.
Jesus förutsäger för första gången att han ska dö
21 Från den tiden började Jesus öppet tala med sina lärjungar om vad som skulle hända med honom: I Jerusalem, sa han, kommer jag att torteras och dödas av de judiska ledarna. Men tre dagar senare ska jag uppstå till livet igen.
22 Petrus tog honom då åt sidan för att protestera mot detta. Han sa: Himlen förbjude att detta sker, Herre! Det får inte hända dig!
23 Jesus vände sig då till Petrus och sa: Gå bort ifrån mig, Satan! Du försöker att få mig på fall. Du tänker som människor, men Guds tankar förstår du inte.
24 Sedan sa Jesus till sina lärjungar: Den som vill bli min efterföljare får inte längre tänka på sig själv, utan måste villigt ta sitt kors på sig och följa mig.
25 Och den som till varje pris vill behålla sitt liv kommer att förlora det, men den som vågar sitt liv för mig kommer att vinna det för alltid.
26 Vad vinner en människa om hela världen blir hennes, samtidigt som hon förlorar det eviga livet? Inte med något kan hon få det tillbaka.
27 Människosonen ska komma med sina änglar i sin Fars härlighet och döma varje människa för vad hon gjort.
28 Och en del av er som står här just nu kommer att leva och se honom i hans rike.

The Demand for a Sign(A)
16 The Pharisees and Sadducees(B) came to Jesus and tested him by asking him to show them a sign from heaven.(C)
2 He replied, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ 3 and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times.[a](D) 4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.”(E) Jesus then left them and went away.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5 When they went across the lake, the disciples forgot to take bread. 6 “Be careful,” Jesus said to them. “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”(F)
7 They discussed this among themselves and said, “It is because we didn’t bring any bread.”
8 Aware of their discussion, Jesus asked, “You of little faith,(G) why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? 9 Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(H) 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many basketfuls you gathered?(I) 11 How is it you don’t understand that I was not talking to you about bread? But be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread, but against the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.(J)
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(K)
13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(L) others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”(M)
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”(N)
17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,(O) but by my Father in heaven.(P) 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b](Q) and on this rock I will build my church,(R) and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys(S) of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.”(T) 20 Then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone(U) that he was the Messiah.
Jesus Predicts His Death(V)
21 From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem(W) and suffer many things(X) at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(Y) and that he must be killed(Z) and on the third day(AA) be raised to life.(AB)
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!”
23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!(AC) You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.(AD) 25 For whoever wants to save their life[f] will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.(AE) 26 What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? 27 For the Son of Man(AF) is going to come(AG) in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.(AH)
28 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Some People Doubt Jesus’ Authority(A)
16 The Pharisees and Sadducees came to Jesus. They wanted to test him. So they asked him to show them a miracle as a sign from God.
2 Jesus answered, “When you people see the sunset, you know what the weather will be. If the sky is red, you say we will have good weather. 3 And in the morning, if the sky is dark and red, you say that it will be a rainy day. These are signs of the weather. You see these signs in the sky and know what they mean. In the same way, you see the things that are happening now. These are also signs, but you don’t know their meaning. 4 It is the evil and sinful people who want to see a miracle as a sign from God. But no miracle will be done to prove anything to them. The only sign will be the miracle that happened to Jonah.[a]” Then Jesus went away from there.
Jesus’ Followers Misunderstand Him(B)
5 Jesus and his followers went across the lake. But the followers forgot to bring bread. 6 Jesus said to the followers, “Be careful! Guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
7 The followers discussed the meaning of this. They said, “Did Jesus say this because we forgot to bring bread?”
8 Jesus knew that they were talking about this. So he asked them, “Why are you talking about not having bread? Your faith is small. 9 Do you still not understand? Remember the five loaves of bread that fed the 5000 people and the many baskets you filled with the bread that was left? 10 And remember the seven loaves of bread that fed the 4000 people and the many baskets you filled that time? 11 So how could you think that I am concerned about bread? I am telling you to be careful and guard against the yeast of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
12 Then the followers understood what Jesus meant. He was not telling them to guard against the yeast used in bread. He was telling them to guard against the teaching of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.
Peter Says Jesus Is the Messiah(C)
13 Jesus went to the area of Caesarea Philippi. He said to his followers, “Who do people say I am[b]?”
14 They answered, “Some people say you are John the Baptizer. Others say you are Elijah. And some say you are Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 Then Jesus said to his followers, “And who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
17 Jesus answered, “You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah. No one taught you that. My Father in heaven showed you who I am. 18 So I tell you, you are Peter.[c] And I will build my church on this rock. The power of death[d] will not be able to defeat my church. 19 I will give you the keys to God’s kingdom. When you speak judgment here on earth, that judgment will be God’s judgment. When you promise forgiveness here on earth, that forgiveness will be God’s forgiveness.”[e]
20 Then Jesus warned his followers not to tell anyone he was the Messiah.
Jesus Says He Must Die(D)
21 From that time Jesus began telling his followers that he must go to Jerusalem. He explained that the older Jewish leaders, the leading priests, and the teachers of the law would make him suffer many things. And he told his followers that he must be killed. Then, on the third day, he would be raised from death.
22 Peter took Jesus away from the other followers to talk to him alone. He began to criticize him. He said, “God save you from those sufferings, Lord! That will never happen to you!”
23 Then Jesus said to Peter, “Get away from me, Satan[f]! You are not helping me! You don’t care about the same things God does. You care only about things that people think are important.”
24 Then Jesus said to his followers, “If any of you want to be my follower, you must stop thinking about yourself and what you want. You must be willing to carry the cross that is given to you for following me. 25 Any of you who try to save the life you have will lose it. But you who give up your life for me will find true life. 26 It is worth nothing for you to have the whole world if you yourself are lost. You could never pay enough to buy back your life. 27 The Son of Man will come again with his Father’s glory and with his angels. And he will reward everyone for what they have done. 28 Believe me when I say that there are some people standing here who will see the Son of Man coming with his kingdom before they die.”
