10 Och han kallade till sig sina tolv lärjungar och gav dem makt över orena andar, till att driva ut dem, så ock makt att bota alla slags sjukdomar och allt slags skröplighet.

Och dessa äro de tolv apostlarnas namn: först Simon, som kallas Petrus, och Andreas, hans broder; vidare Jakob, Sebedeus' son, och Johannes, hans broder;

Filippus och Bartolomeus; Tomas och Matteus, publikanen; Jakob, Alfeus' son, och Lebbeus;

Simon ivraren och Judas Iskariot, densamme som förrådde honom.

Dessa tolv sände Jesus ut; och han bjöd dem och sade: »Ställen icke eder färd till hedningarna, och gån icke in i någon samaritisk stad,

utan gån hellre till de förlorade fåren av Israels hus.

Och där I gån fram skolen I predika och säga: 'Himmelriket är nära.'

Boten sjuka, uppväcken döda, gören spetälska rena, driven ut onda andar. I haven fått för intet; så given ock för intet.

Skaffen eder icke guld eller silver eller koppar i edra bälten,

10 icke någon ränsel för eder färd, ej heller dubbla livklädnader, ej heller skor eller stav; ty arbetaren är värd sin mat.

11 Men när I haven kommit in i någon stad eller by, så utforsken vilken därinne som är värdig, och stannen hos honom, till dess I lämnen den orten.

12 Och när I kommen in i ett hus, så hälsen det.

13 Om då det huset är värdigt, så må den frid I tillönsken det komma däröver; men om det icke är värdigt, då må den frid I tillönsken det vända tillbaka till eder.

14 Och om man på något ställe icke tager emot eder och icke hör på edra ord, så gån ut ur det huset eller den staden, och skudden stoftet av edra fötter.

15 Sannerligen säger jag eder: För Sodoms och Gomorras land skall det på domens dag bliva drägligare än för den staden.

16 Se, jag sänder eder åstad såsom får mitt in ibland ulvar. Varen fördenskull kloka såsom ormar och menlösa såsom duvor.

17 Tagen eder till vara för människorna; ty de skola draga eder inför domstolar, och i sina synagogor skola de gissla eder;

18 och I skolen föras fram också inför landshövdingar och konungar, för min skull, till ett vittnesbörd för dem och för hedningarna.

19 Men när man drager eder inför rätta, gören eder då icke bekymmer för huru eller vad I skolen tala; ty vad I skolen tala skall bliva eder givet i den stunden.

20 Det är icke I som skolen tala, utan det är eder Faders Ande som skall tala i eder.

21 Och den ene brodern skall då överlämna den andre till att dödas, ja ock fadern sitt barn; och barn skola sätta sig upp mot sina föräldrar och skola döda dem.

22 Och I skolen bliva hatade av alla, för mitt namns skull. Men den som är ståndaktig intill änden, han skall bliva frälst. --

23 När de nu förfölja eder i en stad, så flyn till en annan; och om de också där förfölja eder, så flyn till ännu en annan. Ty sannerligen säger jag eder: I skolen icke hava hunnit igenom alla Israels städer, förrän Människosonen kommer.

24 Lärjungen är icke förmer än sin mästare, ej heller är tjänaren förmer än sin herre.

25 Det må vara lärjungen nog, om det går honom såsom hans mästare, och tjänaren, om det går honom såsom hans herre. Om de hava kallat husbonden för Beelsebul, huru mycket mer skola de icke så kalla hans husfolk!

26 Frukten alltså icke för dem; ty intet är förborgat, som icke skall bliva uppenbarat, och intet är fördolt, som icke skall bliva känt.

27 Vad jag säger eder i mörkret, det skolen säga i ljuset, och vad I hören viskas i edert öra, det skolen I predika på taken.

28 Och frukten icke för dem som väl kunna dräpa kroppen, men icke hava makt att dräpa själen, utan frukten fastmer honom som har makt att förgöra både själ och kropp i Gehenna. --

29 Säljas icke två sparvar för en skärv? Och icke en av dem faller till jorden utan eder Faders vilja.

30 Men på eder äro till och med huvudhåren allasammans räknade.

31 Frukten alltså icke; I ären mer värda än många sparvar.

32 Därför, var och en som bekänner mig inför människorna, honom skall ock jag kännas vid inför min Fader, som är i himmelen.

33 Men den som förnekar mig inför människorna, honom skall ock jag förneka inför min Fader, som är i himmelen.

34 I skolen icke mena att jag har kommit för att sända frid på jorden. Jag har icke kommit för att sända frid, utan svärd.

35 Ja, jag har kommit för att uppväcka söndring, så att 'sonen sätter sig upp mot sin fader och dottern mot sin moder och sonhustrun mot sin svärmoder,

36 och envar får sitt eget husfolk till fiender'.

37 Den som älskar fader eller moder mer än mig, han är mig icke värdig, och den som älskar son eller dotter mer än mig, han är mig icke värdig;

38 och den som icke tager sitt kors på sig och efterföljer mig, han är mig icke värdig.

39 Den som finner sitt liv, han skall mista det, och den som mister sitt liv, för min skull, han skall finna det. --

40 Den som tager emot eder, han tager emot mig, och den som tager emot mig, han tager emot honom som har sänt mig.

41 Den som tager emot en profet, därför att det är en profet, han skall få en profets lön; och den som tager emot en rättfärdig man, därför att det är en rättfärdig man, han skall få en rättfärdig mans lön.

42 Och den som giver en av dessa små allenast en bägare friskt vatten att dricka, därför att det är en lärjunge -- sannerligen säger jag eder: Han skall ingalunda gå miste om sin lön.»

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(A)(B)(C)(D)(E)

10 Jesus called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out impure spirits(F) and to heal every disease and sickness.(G)

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon (who is called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.(H)

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: “Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.(I) Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.(J) As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven(K) has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy,[a] drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.

“Do not get any gold or silver or copper to take with you in your belts(L) 10 no bag for the journey or extra shirt or sandals or a staff, for the worker is worth his keep.(M) 11 Whatever town or village you enter, search there for some worthy person and stay at their house until you leave. 12 As you enter the home, give it your greeting.(N) 13 If the home is deserving, let your peace rest on it; if it is not, let your peace return to you. 14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet.(O) 15 Truly I tell you, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah(P) on the day of judgment(Q) than for that town.(R)

16 “I am sending you out like sheep among wolves.(S) Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.(T) 17 Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils(U) and be flogged in the synagogues.(V) 18 On my account you will be brought before governors and kings(W) as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. 19 But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it.(X) At that time you will be given what to say, 20 for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father(Y) speaking through you.

21 “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents(Z) and have them put to death.(AA) 22 You will be hated by everyone because of me,(AB) but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.(AC) 23 When you are persecuted in one place, flee to another. Truly I tell you, you will not finish going through the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.(AD)

24 “The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master.(AE) 25 It is enough for students to be like their teachers, and servants like their masters. If the head of the house has been called Beelzebul,(AF) how much more the members of his household!

26 “So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known.(AG) 27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. 28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One(AH) who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care.[b] 30 And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered.(AI) 31 So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.(AJ)

32 “Whoever acknowledges me before others,(AK) I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven.(AL)

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn

“‘a man against his father,
    a daughter against her mother,
a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law(AM)
36     a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[c](AN)

37 “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.(AO) 38 Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.(AP) 39 Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.(AQ)

40 “Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me,(AR) and anyone who welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(AS) 41 Whoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.”(AT)

Jesus Sends Out His Apostles

10 Jesus called his 12 followers together. He gave them power to drive out evil spirits and to heal every kind of disease and sickness. These are the names of the 12 apostles: Simon (also called Peter) and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew, the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot. Judas is the one who turned against Jesus.

These 12 men he sent out with the following order: “Don’t go to the non-Jewish people. And don’t go into any town where the Samaritans live. But go to the people of Israel. They are like sheep that are lost. When you go, preach this: ‘The kingdom of heaven is coming soon.’ Heal the sick. Give dead people life again. Heal those who have harmful skin diseases. Force demons to leave people. I give you these powers freely. So help other people freely. Don’t carry any money with you—gold or silver or copper. 10 Don’t carry a bag. Take for your trip only the clothes and sandals you are wearing. Don’t take a walking stick. A worker should be given the things he needs.

11 “When you enter a city or town, find some worthy person there and stay in his home until you leave. 12 When you enter that home, say, ‘Peace be with you.’ 13 If the people there welcome you, let your peace stay there. But if they don’t welcome you, take back the peace you wished for them. 14 And if a home or town refuses to welcome you or listen to you, then leave that place. Shake its dust off your feet.[a] 15 I tell you the truth. On the Judgment Day it will be worse for that town than for the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah.[b]

Jesus Warns His Apostles

16 “Listen! I am sending you out, and you will be like sheep among wolves. So be as smart as snakes. But also be like doves and do nothing wrong. 17 Be careful of people. They will arrest you and take you to court. They will whip you in their synagogues. 18 Because of me you will be taken to stand before governors and kings. You will tell them and the non-Jewish people about me. 19 When you are arrested, don’t worry about what to say or how you should say it. At that time you will be given the things to say. 20 It will not really be you speaking. The Spirit of your Father will be speaking through you.

21 “Brothers will turn against their own brothers and give them over to be killed. Fathers will turn against their own children and give them to be killed. Children will fight against their own parents and have them killed. 22 All people will hate you because you follow me. But the person who continues strong until the end will be saved. 23 When you are treated badly in one city, go to another city. I tell you the truth. You will not finish going through all the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.

24 “A student is not better than his teacher. A servant is not better than his master. 25 A student should be satisfied to become like his teacher. A servant should be satisfied to become like his master. If the head of the family is called Beelzebul, then the other members of the family will be called worse names!

Fear God, Not People

26 “So don’t be afraid of those people. Everything that is hidden will be shown. Everything that is secret will be made known. 27 I tell you these things in the dark, but I want you to tell them in the light. I speak these things only to you, but you should tell them to everyone. 28 Don’t be afraid of people. They can only kill the body. They cannot kill the soul. The only one you should fear is the One who can destroy the body and the soul in hell. 29 When birds are sold, two small birds cost only a penny. But not even one of the little birds can die without your Father’s knowing it. 30 God even knows how many hairs are on your head. 31 So don’t be afraid. You are worth much more than many birds.

Tell People About Your Faith

32 “If anyone stands before other people and says he believes in me, then I will say that he belongs to me. I will say this before my Father in heaven. 33 But if anyone stands before people and says he does not believe in me, then I will say that he does not belong to me. I will say this before my Father in heaven.

34 “Don’t think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 I have come to make this happen:

‘A son will be against his father,
    a daughter will be against her mother,
a daughter-in-law will be against her mother-in-law.
36     A person’s enemies will be members of his own family.’ Micah 7:6

37 “Whoever loves his father or mother more than he loves me is not worthy to be my follower. Whoever loves his son or daughter more than he loves me is not worthy to be my follower. 38 Whoever is not willing to die on a cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever tries to hold on to his life will give up true life. Whoever gives up his life for me will hold on to true life. 40 Whoever accepts you also accepts me. And whoever accepts me also accepts the One who sent me. 41 Whoever meets a prophet and accepts him will receive the reward of a prophet. And whoever accepts a good man because that man is good will receive the reward of a good man. 42 Whoever helps one of these little ones because they are my followers will truly get his reward. He will get his reward even if he only gave my follower a cup of cold water.”
