Gesù consegnato nelle mani di Pilato

27 (A)Poi, venuta la mattina, tutti i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani del popolo tennero consiglio contro Gesù per farlo morire. 2 E, legatolo, lo portarono via e lo consegnarono a [Ponzio] Pilato, il governatore.

Vano rimorso di Giuda

3 (B)Allora Giuda, che l’aveva tradito, vedendo che Gesù era stato condannato, si pentì e riportò i trenta sicli d’argento ai capi dei sacerdoti e agli anziani, 4 dicendo: «Ho peccato, consegnandovi sangue innocente». Ma essi dissero: «Che c’importa? Pensaci tu». 5 Ed egli, buttati i sicli nel tempio, si allontanò e andò a impiccarsi. 6 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti, presi quei sicli, dissero: «Non è lecito metterli nel tesoro delle offerte[a], perché sono prezzo di sangue». 7 E, tenuto consiglio, comprarono con quel denaro il campo del vasaio perché servisse per la sepoltura degli stranieri. 8 Perciò quel campo, fino al giorno d’oggi, è stato chiamato «Campo di sangue». 9 Allora si adempì quello che era stato detto dal profeta Geremia: «E presero i trenta sicli d’argento, il prezzo di colui che era stato venduto, come era stato valutato dai figli d’Israele, 10 e li diedero per il campo del vasaio, come me l’aveva ordinato il Signore»[b].

Gesù davanti a Pilato

11 (C)Gesù comparve davanti al governatore e il governatore lo interrogò, dicendo: «Sei tu il re dei Giudei?» Gesù [gli] disse: «Tu lo dici». 12 E, accusato dai capi dei sacerdoti e dagli anziani, non rispose nulla. 13 Allora Pilato gli disse: «Non senti quante cose testimoniano contro di te?» 14 Ma egli non gli rispose neppure una parola; e il governatore se ne meravigliava molto.

Gesù o Barabba?

15 (D)Ogni festa di Pasqua il governatore era solito liberare un carcerato, quello che la folla voleva. 16 Avevano allora un noto carcerato di nome Barabba[c]. 17 Essendo dunque radunati, Pilato domandò loro: «Chi volete che vi liberi, Barabba[d] o Gesù detto Cristo?» 18 Perché egli sapeva che glielo avevano consegnato per invidia. 19 Mentre egli sedeva in tribunale, la moglie gli mandò a dire: «Non aver nulla a che fare con quel giusto, perché oggi ho sofferto molto in sogno per causa sua». 20 Ma i capi dei sacerdoti e gli anziani persuasero la folla a chiedere Barabba e a far morire Gesù. 21 E il governatore si rivolse di nuovo a loro, dicendo: «Quale dei due volete che vi liberi?» E quelli dissero: «Barabba». 22 E Pilato a loro: «Che farò dunque di Gesù detto Cristo?» Tutti [gli] risposero: «Sia crocifisso». 23 Ma egli[e] riprese: «Che male ha fatto?» Ma quelli sempre più gridavano: «Sia crocifisso!» 24 Pilato, vedendo che non otteneva nulla ma che si sollevava un tumulto, prese dell’acqua e si lavò le mani in presenza della folla, dicendo: «Io sono innocente di questo sangue[f]; pensateci voi». 25 E tutto il popolo rispose: «Il suo sangue ricada su di noi e sui nostri figli».

26 Allora egli liberò loro Barabba; e, dopo aver fatto flagellare Gesù, lo consegnò perché fosse crocifisso.

Gesù coronato di spine

27 (E)Allora i soldati del governatore portarono Gesù nel pretorio[g] e radunarono attorno a lui tutta la coorte[h]. 28 E, spogliatolo, gli misero addosso un manto scarlatto[i]; 29 intrecciata una corona di spine, gliela posero sul capo e gli misero una canna nella mano destra e, inginocchiandosi davanti a lui, lo schernivano, dicendo: «Salve, re dei Giudei!» 30 E gli sputavano addosso, prendevano la canna e gli percuotevano il capo. 31 E, dopo averlo schernito, lo spogliarono del manto e lo rivestirono dei suoi abiti; poi lo condussero via per crocifiggerlo.

La crocifissione di Gesù

32 (F)Mentre uscivano, trovarono un uomo di Cirene, chiamato Simone, e lo costrinsero a portare la croce di Gesù. 33 E giunti a un luogo detto Golgota, che vuol dire «luogo del teschio», 34 gli diedero da bere del vino mescolato con fiele[j]; ma Gesù, assaggiatolo, non volle berne.

35 Poi, dopo averlo crocifisso, spartirono i suoi vestiti tirando a sorte[k]; 36 e, postisi a sedere, gli facevano la guardia.

37 Al di sopra del capo gli posero scritto il motivo della condanna: «Questo è Gesù, il re dei Giudei».

38 Allora furono crocifissi con lui due ladroni, uno a destra e l’altro a sinistra.

39 (G)E quelli che passavano di là lo ingiuriavano, scuotendo il capo e dicendo: 40 «Tu che distruggi il tempio e in tre giorni lo ricostruisci, salva te stesso! Se tu sei Figlio di Dio, scendi giù dalla croce!» 41 Così pure, i capi dei sacerdoti con gli scribi e gli anziani[l], beffandosi, dicevano: 42 «Ha salvato altri e non può salvare se stesso! È il re d’Israele[m]; scenda ora giù dalla croce, e noi crederemo in lui[n]. 43 Si è confidato in Dio: lo liberi ora, se lo gradisce,[o] poiché ha detto: “Sono Figlio di Dio”». 44 E nello stesso modo lo insultavano anche i ladroni crocifissi con lui.

Morte di Gesù

45 (H)Dall’ora sesta si fecero tenebre su tutto il paese, fino all’ora nona[p]. 46 E, verso l’ora nona, Gesù gridò a gran voce: «Elì, Elì, lamà sabactàni?», cioè: «Dio mio, Dio mio, perché mi hai abbandonato?»[q] 47 Alcuni dei presenti, udito ciò, dicevano: «Costui chiama Elia». 48 E subito uno di loro corse a prendere una spugna e, inzuppatala di aceto, la pose in cima a una canna e gli diede da bere. 49 Ma gli altri dicevano: «Lascia, vediamo se Elia viene a salvarlo».

50 E Gesù, avendo di nuovo gridato con gran voce, rese lo spirito.

51 (I)Ed ecco, la cortina del tempio si squarciò in due, da cima a fondo, la terra tremò, le rocce si schiantarono, 52 le tombe s’aprirono e molti corpi dei santi, che dormivano, risuscitarono; 53 e, usciti dai sepolcri dopo la risurrezione di lui, entrarono nella città santa e apparvero a molti.

54 Il centurione e quelli che con lui facevano la guardia a Gesù, visto il terremoto e le cose avvenute, furono presi da grande spavento e dissero: «Veramente costui era Figlio di Dio».

55 C’erano là molte donne che guardavano da lontano; esse avevano seguito Gesù dalla Galilea per assisterlo; 56 tra di loro erano Maria Maddalena, Maria, madre di Giacomo e di Giuseppe[r], e la madre dei figli di Zebedeo.

Seppellimento di Gesù

57 (J)Fattosi sera, venne un uomo ricco di Arimatea, chiamato Giuseppe, il quale era diventato anche lui discepolo di Gesù. 58 Questi, presentatosi a Pilato, chiese il corpo di Gesù. Allora Pilato comandò che [il corpo] gli fosse dato. 59 Giuseppe prese il corpo, lo avvolse in un lenzuolo pulito 60 e lo depose nella propria tomba nuova, che aveva fatto scavare nella roccia. Poi, dopo aver rotolato una grande pietra contro l’apertura del sepolcro, se ne andò. 61 Maria Maddalena e l’altra Maria erano lì, sedute di fronte al sepolcro.

Il sepolcro sigillato e custodito

62 (K)L’indomani, che era il giorno successivo alla Preparazione, i capi dei sacerdoti e i farisei si riunirono da Pilato, dicendo: 63 «Signore, ci siamo ricordati che quel seduttore, mentre viveva ancora, disse: “Dopo tre giorni risusciterò”. 64 Ordina dunque che il sepolcro sia sicuramente custodito fino al terzo giorno; perché i suoi discepoli non vengano [di notte] a rubarlo e dicano al popolo: “È risuscitato dai morti”; così l’ultimo inganno sarebbe peggiore del primo». 65 Pilato disse loro: «Avete delle guardie. Andate, assicurate la sorveglianza come credete». 66 Ed essi andarono ad assicurare il sepolcro, sigillando la pietra e mettendovi la guardia.

The important Jews take Jesus to stand in front of Pilate

27 Early the next morning, all the leaders of the priests and the important Jews met together. They decided how to make the Roman rulers kill Jesus. 2 They tied Jesus' hands and feet and then they took him to Pilate's house. They put him under the authority of Pilate, who was the Roman ruler.[a]

Judas dies

3 Judas heard that the Jewish leaders wanted the Roman rulers to kill Jesus. Judas was the man who had helped Jesus' enemies to take hold of him. Now he was very sorry about what he had done. So he took back the 30 silver coins to the leaders of the priests and the important Jews. 4 He said to them, ‘I have done the wrong thing. I helped you to take hold of a man who has done nothing wrong.’

They said to Judas, ‘That is not important to us. That is your problem.’

5 So Judas took the money and he threw it down on the floor in the temple. Then he went away. He hung himself from a rope so that he died.

6 The leaders of the priests picked up the coins. They said, ‘We used this money to catch and kill a man. So it is against our Law to use this same money for the temple.’ 7 They decided to use the money to buy a field. They wanted to use the field to bury foreign people who died in the city. The field had been called ‘The Pot-maker's Field’. 8 After this, it was called ‘The Field of Blood’. It is still called that even today. 9 So the words that the prophet Jeremiah wrote long ago now became true.[b] He had said, ‘Then they took the 30 silver coins. It was the amount of money the people of Israel had agreed to pay for the man. 10 They used this money to buy the pot-maker's field. The Lord God had told me to do this.’

Pilate asks Jesus some questions

11 Now Jesus stood in front of the Roman ruler, Pilate. The ruler asked Jesus, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’

Jesus replied, ‘You have said it.’

12 The leaders of the priests and the important Jews spoke against Jesus. They said that he had done many bad things. Jesus did not answer them. 13 So Pilate said to Jesus, ‘You hear what these men are saying against you. You should reply.’ 14 But Jesus did not reply to what the men were saying against him, not even to one thing. Pilate was very surprised about this.

15 Each year, at the time for the Passover festival, the Roman ruler would let one person go free out of the prison. The people could choose which person should go free. 16 At that time, there was a man called Barabbas in prison. Everyone knew about the bad things that he had done. 17 When the crowd came together at Pilate's house, Pilate asked them, ‘Who do you want me to let go free? Should Barabbas go free? Or should it be Jesus, who is called the Messiah?’ 18 Pilate knew why the Jewish leaders had brought Jesus to him. They were jealous because people liked Jesus so much.

19 Pilate was sitting on his special seat as a judge. Then his wife sent a message to him. She said, ‘Do not do anything to that man. He has done nothing wrong. Last night I had a dream about him. It gave me a lot of trouble in my mind.’

20 But the leaders of the priests and the important Jews talked to the crowds of people. They said, ‘You must ask Pilate to let Barabbas go free. Then he must tell the soldiers to kill Jesus.’

21 Pilate asked the people again, ‘Which of these two men should go free?’ The people answered, ‘Barabbas.’

22 Then Pilate asked the people, ‘So what should I do with Jesus, who is called the Messiah?’ The people all shouted, ‘Take him and kill him on a cross!’

23 So Pilate said, ‘Why should I kill him? What bad things has he done?’

But the people shouted even louder, ‘Kill him on a cross!’

24 Then Pilate knew that he could not do anything to make them quiet. He thought that the people would start to fight his soldiers. So he took a dish of water and he washed his hands in front of the people. He said, ‘It is not because of me that this man will die. You are the people who have caused it to happen.’

25 All the people answered Pilate, ‘Yes, God should punish us and our children, if we have done the wrong thing.’

26 Then Pilate let Barabbas go free, as the crowd wanted. But he said to his soldiers, ‘Hit Jesus many times with a whip. Then take him and fix him to a cross to die.’

27 Then Pilate's soldiers took Jesus into the yard of the ruler's house. All the other soldiers in their group were there. 28 They removed Jesus' clothes from him. They put a dark red coat on him. 29 They used some branches with thorns to make a crown for him. Then they put it on his head. They put a long stick in his right hand. They went down on their knees in front of him. They laughed at him and they said, ‘Hello, King of the Jews, you are great!’[c]

30 Then the soldiers spat into Jesus' face. They took the stick and they hit Jesus on his head with it many times. 31 After they had laughed at him, they took the special coat off him. They put his own clothes back on him. Then they took him out to the place where they would kill him on a cross.

The soldiers kill Jesus on a cross

32 When they were going to that place, they met a man called Simon. He came from the city of Cyrene. The Roman soldiers told Simon that he must carry Jesus' cross. 33 The soldiers took Jesus to the place that is called Golgotha. (Golgotha means the place of a skull.[d] )

34 They tried to give Jesus some wine to drink. They had mixed some medicine into the wine. Jesus tasted it, but he would not drink it. 35 Then the soldiers fixed Jesus onto the cross. They took his clothes for themselves. They played a game to find out who would receive each piece of his clothes. 36 Then the soldiers sat down and they watched Jesus carefully. 37 Above his head they fixed a notice. This showed the reason why they were killing him. It said, ‘This man is Jesus, the king of the Jews.’ 38 Then the soldiers also fixed two robbers to crosses near to Jesus. One robber was at Jesus' right side, and one was at his left side.

39 The people who walked near there insulted Jesus. They laughed at him, 40 and they said, ‘You said that you could destroy the temple and then build it again in three days. If you really are the Son of God, save yourself. Come down from the cross.’

41 The leaders of the priests and the teachers of God's Law and the important Jews also laughed at him. 42 They said, ‘This man saved other people, did he? But he cannot save his own life! He says that he is the king of Israel. So he should come down from the cross now. Then we will believe in him. 43 He says that he trusts in God. So if God wants him, God should save him now. He did say that he is the Son of God.’ 44 Then the two robbers who were on the crosses next to Jesus also insulted him.

Jesus dies

45 It was now midday. The whole country became dark for three hours. 46 At about three o'clock in the afternoon, Jesus shouted loudly, ‘Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?’ That means, ‘My God, my God, why have you left me alone?’

47 Some people who were standing there heard him. They said to each other, ‘He is shouting to Elijah.’

48 One of these people ran quickly and he brought a piece of cloth. He poured cheap wine on it, and he put it on the end of a stick. He lifted it up to Jesus so that he could drink the wine from it. 49 The other people said, ‘Wait! Now we will see if Elijah comes to save him.’

50 Then Jesus shouted again with a loud voice, and after that he died.

51 At that moment, the curtain inside the temple tore completely into two parts. It tore from the top down to the bottom. The ground shook and rocks broke into pieces. 52 Places in the ground where people had buried dead bodies opened up. Many of God's people who had died now became alive again. 53 After Jesus became alive again, those people came up out of those places. They went into God's city, Jerusalem. Many people saw them there.

54 The captain and his soldiers had been watching Jesus. They saw the ground shaking. They saw everything that had happened. They were very frightened and they said, ‘It must be true! This man really was the Son of God.’

55 There were also many women there. They were standing a long way away and they were watching these events. They had come with Jesus from Galilee to help him. 56 Mary from Magdala was there. Mary the mother of James and Joses, and Mary the mother of Zebedee's sons, were also there.

Joseph from Arimathea buries Jesus' body

57 That evening a rich man who came from a town called Arimathea went to Pilate. The man's name was Joseph, and he had become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Joseph asked Pilate for the dead body of Jesus. Pilate told his soldiers to give Jesus' body to Joseph. 59 So Joseph took Jesus' body. He put a clean piece of linen cloth around it. 60 Then he put the body in a large hole in a rock. He had made the hole for his own body when he died. After he put Jesus' body there, he rolled a very big stone across the front of the hole to shut it. Then he went away. 61 Mary from Magdala and Mary the mother of James were there. They were sitting where they could see the hole in the rock where Joseph had put Jesus' body.

Soldiers watch the place where Joseph had buried Jesus

62 The next day was the Jewish day of rest. The leaders of the priests and the Pharisees met together with Pilate. 63 They said to him, ‘Sir, that man told lies. When he was still living, he said, “Three days after I die, I will become alive again.” We know that is what he said. 64 So you should tell some soldiers to watch the place where Joseph put Jesus' body. They should watch there for the next three days. Then his disciples cannot come to take his body away. If they did that, then they could say to the people, “God has caused Jesus to become alive again.” This will be worse than the lies that Jesus told when he was alive.’

65 Pilate said to them, ‘OK. You may take a group of soldiers to watch the place. Let them fix the rock well, so that nobody can open it.’ 66 So the Jewish leaders and the soldiers went to the place where Joseph had put Jesus' body. They fixed the big stone that closed the front of the hole with a seal. Then they would know if someone had moved it. The soldiers stayed there to watch the place very carefully.

Judas Hangs Himself

27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(A) 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(B) to Pilate the governor.(C)

3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”

“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)

5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)

6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)

Jesus Before Pilate(L)

11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(M)

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.

15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.

19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”

20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)

21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.

“Barabbas,” they answered.

22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.

They all answered, “Crucify him!”

23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)

25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)

26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.

The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)

27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)

The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)

32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.

38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus(AZ)

45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)

47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”

48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”

50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)

51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.

54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)

55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)

The Burial of Jesus(BL)

57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.

The Guard at the Tomb

62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”

65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)
