Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

24 So when Pilate saw that he was gaining nothing, but rather that (A)a riot was beginning, he took water and (B)washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of (C)this man's blood;[a] (D)see to it yourselves.” 25 And all the people answered, (E)“His blood be on us and (F)on our children!” 26 Then he released for them Barabbas, and having (G)scourged[b] Jesus, delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

27 (H)Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the (I)governor's headquarters,[c] and they gathered the whole (J)battalion[d] before him. 28 And they stripped him and put (K)a scarlet robe on him, 29 and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they (L)mocked him, saying, “Hail, (M)King of the Jews!” 30 And (N)they spit on him and took the reed and struck him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and (O)led him away to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

32 (P)(Q)As they went out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name. They compelled this man to (R)carry his cross. 33 (S)And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull), 34 (T)they offered him wine to drink, mixed with (U)gall, but when he tasted it, he would not drink it. 35 And when they had crucified him, (V)they divided his garments among them by casting lots. 36 Then they sat down and (W)kept watch over him there. 37 And over his head they put the charge against him, which read, “This is Jesus, (X)the King of the Jews.” 38 Then two (Y)robbers were crucified with him, (Z)one on the right and one on the left. 39 And (AA)those who passed by (AB)derided him, (AC)wagging their heads 40 and saying, (AD)“You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself! (AE)If you are (AF)the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 So also the chief priests, with the scribes and elders, mocked him, saying, 42 (AG)“He saved others; (AH)he cannot save himself. (AI)He is the King of Israel; let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 (AJ)He trusts in God; let God deliver him now, if he desires him. For he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 (AK)And the robbers who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

My Soul Thirsts for You

A Psalm of David, (A)when he was in the wilderness of Judah.

63 O God, you are my God; (B)earnestly I seek you;
    (C)my soul thirsts for you;
my flesh faints for you,
    as in (D)a dry and weary land where there is no water.
So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary,
    beholding (E)your power and glory.
Because your (F)steadfast love is better than life,
    my lips will praise you.
So I will bless you (G)as long as I live;
    in your (H)name I will (I)lift up my hands.

My soul will be (J)satisfied as with fat and rich food,
    and my mouth will praise you with joyful lips,
when I remember you (K)upon my bed,
    and meditate on you in (L)the watches of the night;
for you have been my help,
    and in (M)the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy.
My soul (N)clings to you;
    your right hand (O)upholds me.

But those who seek to destroy my life
    (P)shall go down into (Q)the depths of the earth;
10 they shall be given over to the power of the sword;
    they shall be a portion for jackals.
11 But (R)the king shall rejoice in God;
    all who (S)swear by him shall exult,
    (T)for the mouths of (U)liars will be stopped.
