Sadducees Ask About the Resurrection

²³The same day ^(A)Sadducees came to him, ^(B)who say that there is no resurrection, and they asked him a question, ²⁴saying, “Teacher, Moses said, ^(C)‘If a man dies having no children, his brother must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.’ ²⁵Now there were seven brothers among us. The first married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother. ²⁶So too the second and third, down to the seventh. ²⁷After them all, the woman died. ²⁸In the resurrection, therefore, of the seven, whose wife will she be? For they all had her.”

²⁹But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, ^(D)because you know neither the Scriptures nor ^(E)the power of God. ³⁰For in the resurrection they neither ^(F)marry nor ^(G)are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. ³¹And as for the resurrection of the dead, ^(H)have you not read what was said to you by God: ³²^(I)‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living.” ³³And when the crowd heard it, ^(J)they were astonished at his teaching.

The Great Commandment

³⁴^(K)But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced ^(L)the Sadducees, they gathered together. ³⁵^(M)And one of them, ^(N)a lawyer, asked him a question ^(O)to test him. ³⁶“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” ³⁷And he said to him, ^(P)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ³⁸This is the great and first commandment. ³⁹And ^(Q)a second is like it: ^(R)You shall love your neighbor as yourself. ⁴⁰^(S)On these two commandments depend ^(T)all the Law and the Prophets.”

Whose Son Is the Christ?

⁴¹^(U)Now while the Pharisees ^(V)were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, ⁴²saying, “What do you think about ^(W)the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, ^(X)“The son of David.” ⁴³He said to them, “How is it then that David, ^(Y)in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

⁴⁴^(Z)“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

⁴⁵If then David calls him Lord, ^(AA)how is he his son?” ⁴⁶^(AB)And no one was able to answer him a word, ^(AC)nor from that day did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.

The Steadfast Love of God Endures

To the choirmaster. A Maskil^[a] of David, when ^(A)Doeg, the Edomite, came and told Saul, “David has come to the house of Ahimelech.”

52 Why do you boast of evil, O mighty man?
    The steadfast love of God endures all the day.
²Your ^(B)tongue plots destruction,
    like ^(C)a sharp razor, you ^(D)worker of deceit.
³You love evil more than good,
    and ^(E)lying more than speaking what is right. Selah
⁴You love all words that devour,
    O deceitful tongue.

⁵But God will break you down forever;
    he will snatch and ^(F)tear you from your tent;
    he will uproot you from ^(G)the land of the living. Selah
⁶The righteous shall ^(H)see and fear,
    and shall ^(I)laugh at him, saying,
⁷“See the man who would not make
    God his refuge,
but ^(J)trusted in the abundance of his riches
    and sought refuge in his own destruction!”^[b]

⁸But I am like ^(K)a green olive tree
    in the house of God.
I trust in the steadfast love of God
    forever and ever.
⁹I will thank you forever,
    because you have done it.
I will wait for your name, ^(L)for it is good,
    in the presence of the ^(M)godly.
