Giving to the Needy

6 “Beware of ^(A)practicing your righteousness before other people in order ^(B)to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.

^5 (A)They do all their deeds ^(B)to be seen by others. For they make ^(C)their phylacteries broad and ^(D)their fringes long,

^43 (A)for they loved the glory that comes from man more than the glory that comes from God.

¹⁰ For ^(A)God is not unjust so as to overlook ^(B)your work and the love that you have shown for his name in ^(C)serving the saints, as you still do.

²⁸ So you also ^(A)outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of ^(B)hypocrisy and lawlessness.

^29 (C)“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, ³⁰ saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’

¹⁵ And he said to them, “You are those who ^(A)justify yourselves before men, but ^(B)God knows your hearts. For what is exalted among men ^(C)is an abomination in the sight of God.

^12 (A)It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh ^(B)who would force you to be circumcised, and only ^(C)in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ.

⁴ so that your giving may be in secret. ^(A)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

The Lord's Prayer

⁵ “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love ^(B)to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. ^(C)Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. ⁶ But when you pray, ^(D)go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. ^(E)And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

^31 (A)And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for ^(B)with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain.
