⁵² Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For ^(A)all who take the sword will perish by the sword.

^(C)Here is a call for the endurance and faith of the saints.

¹⁹ Beloved, ^(A)never avenge yourselves, but leave it^[a] to the wrath of God, for it is written, ^(B)“Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.”

²¹ For ^(A)to this you have been called, ^(B)because Christ also suffered for you, ^(C)leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. ^22 (D)He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. ^23 (E)When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, ^(F)but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.

^9 (A)Do not repay evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary, ^(B)bless, for ^(C)to this you were called, that you may obtain a blessing.

^34 (A)Therefore ^(B)I send you ^(C)prophets and wise men and ^(D)scribes, ^(E)some of whom you will kill and crucify, and ^(F)some you will ^(G)flog in your synagogues and ^(H)persecute from town to town, ³⁵ so that on you may come all ^(I)the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous ^(J)Abel to the blood of ^(K)Zechariah the son of Barachiah,^[a] whom you murdered between ^(L)the sanctuary and ^(M)the altar. ³⁶ Truly, I say to you, ^(N)all these things will come upon this generation.

⁵ Because ^(A)you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword ^(B)at the time of their calamity, ^(C)at the time of their final punishment, ⁶ therefore, ^(D)as I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; ^(E)because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you.
