⁴² For ^(A)I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,

^15 (A)If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, ^16 (B)and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good^[a] is that? ¹⁷ So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

¹⁸ But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith ^(C)apart from your works, and I will show you my faith ^(D)by my works. ^19 (E)You believe that God is one; you do well. Even ^(F)the demons believe—and shudder! ²⁰ Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? ^21 (G)Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? ²² You see that ^(H)faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed ^(I)by his works; ²³ and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ^(J)“Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a ^(K)friend of God. ²⁴ You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

^8 (A)in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those ^(B)who do not know God and on those who ^(C)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.

²² If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be ^(A)accursed. Our Lord, come!^[a]

²³ that all may honor the Son, just as they ^(A)honor the Father. ^(B)Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

^30 (A)Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.

^20 (A)If anyone says, “I love God,” and ^(B)hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot^[a] love God ^(C)whom he has not seen.

¹⁴ We know that ^(A)we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. ^15 (B)Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that ^(C)no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

¹⁶ By this we know love, that ^(D)he laid down his life for us, and ^(E)we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers. ¹⁷ But ^(F)if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet ^(G)closes his heart against him, ^(H)how does God's love abide in him?

^21 (A)Whoever has my commandments and ^(B)keeps them, he it is who loves me. And ^(C)he who loves me ^(D)will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and ^(E)manifest myself to him.”
