³⁸ “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir.^(A) Come, let’s kill him^(B) and take his inheritance.’^(C)

¹⁴ “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’

¹⁸ But they saw him in the distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.^(A)

¹⁹ “Here comes that dreamer!^(B)” they said to each other. ²⁰ “Come now, let’s kill him and throw him into one of these cisterns^(C) and say that a ferocious animal^(D) devoured him.^(E) Then we’ll see what comes of his dreams.”^(F)

² but in these last days^(A) he has spoken to us by his Son,^(B) whom he appointed heir^(C) of all things, and through whom^(D) also he made the universe.^(E)

⁷ “But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ ⁸ So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

²⁷ Indeed Herod^(A) and Pontius Pilate^(B) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,^(C) whom you anointed. ²⁸ They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen.^(D)

⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees^(A) called a meeting^(B) of the Sanhedrin.^(C)

“What are we accomplishing?” they asked. “Here is this man performing many signs.^{(D) 48} If we let him go on like this, everyone will believe in him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our temple and our nation.”

⁴⁹ Then one of them, named Caiaphas,^(E) who was high priest that year,^(F) spoke up, “You know nothing at all! ⁵⁰ You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”^(G)

⁵¹ He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation, ⁵² and not only for that nation but also for the scattered children of God, to bring them together and make them one.^{(H) 53} So from that day on they plotted to take his life.^(I)

³ Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled^(A) in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas,^{(B) 4} and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him.^(C)

²⁴ On hearing this report, the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests^(A) were at a loss, wondering what this might lead to.

²⁵ Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courts teaching the people.” ²⁶ At that, the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles. They did not use force, because they feared that the people^(B) would stone them.

²⁷ The apostles were brought in and made to appear before the Sanhedrin^(C) to be questioned by the high priest. ²⁸ “We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,”^(D) he said. “Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man’s blood.”^(E)
