¹⁴ Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.

³¹ “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever the law says,^(A) it says to those who are under the law,^(B) so that every mouth may be silenced^(C) and the whole world held accountable to God.^(D)

⁴ Not at all! Let God be true,^(A) and every human being a liar.^(B) As it is written:

Fasting

¹⁶ “When you fast,^(A) do not look somber^(B) as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

⁶ But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father,^(A) who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

¹⁸ “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar^(A) king of Babylon drove his army in a hard campaign against Tyre; every head was rubbed bare^(B) and every shoulder made raw.^(C) Yet he and his army got no reward from the campaign he led against Tyre. ¹⁹ Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to give Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king^(D) of Babylon, and he will carry off its wealth. He will loot and plunder^(E) the land as pay for his army.^{(F) 20} I have given him Egypt^(G) as a reward for his efforts because he and his army did it for me, declares the Sovereign Lord.^(H)

³⁰ The Lord said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in accomplishing what is right in my eyes and have done to the house of Ahab all I had in mind to do, your descendants will sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”^{(A) 31} Yet Jehu was not careful^(B) to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins^(C) of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.
