⁸ And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.”

¹⁹ For ^(A)the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, ^(B)“He catches the wise in their craftiness,” ²⁰ and again, ^(C)“The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.”

^20 (A)So they ^(B)watched him and sent spies, who ^(C)pretended to be sincere, that they might ^(D)catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of ^(E)the governor. ²¹ So they asked him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach rightly, and ^(F)show no partiality,^[a] but truly teach ^(G)the way of God.

⁵ eighty men arrived from ^(A)Shechem and ^(B)Shiloh and ^(C)Samaria, with ^(D)their beards shaved and ^(E)their clothes torn, and ^(F)their bodies gashed, ^(G)bringing grain offerings and incense to present at the temple of the Lord. ⁶ And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah came out from ^(H)Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he came. As he met them, he said to them, “Come in to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.” ⁷ When they came into the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and cast them into a cistern.

⁴⁸ Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” ⁴⁹ And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, ^(A)Rabbi!” And he kissed him.
