^16 (A)And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to ^(B)have ^(C)eternal life?”

The Rich Young Man

^17 (A)And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and ^(B)knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to ^(C)inherit eternal life?” ¹⁸ And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. ¹⁹ You know the commandments: ^(D)‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” ²⁰ And he said to him, “Teacher, ^(E)all these I have kept from my youth.” ²¹ And Jesus, ^(F)looking at him, ^(G)loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, ^(H)sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have ^(I)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” ^22 (J)Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

²³ And Jesus ^(K)looked around and said to his disciples, ^(L)“How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter ^(M)the kingdom of God!” ²⁴ And the disciples ^(N)were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, ^(O)“Children, ^(P)how difficult it is^[a] to enter ^(Q)the kingdom of God! ²⁵ It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter ^(R)the kingdom of God.” ²⁶ And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him,^[b] “Then who can be saved?” ²⁷ Jesus ^(S)looked at them and said, ^(T)“With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” ²⁸ Peter began to say to him, “See, ^(U)we have left everything and followed you.” ²⁹ Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, ^(V)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and ^(W)for the gospel, ³⁰ who will not receive a hundredfold ^(X)now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, ^(Y)with persecutions, and in ^(Z)the age to come eternal life.

^21 (A)keep yourselves in the love of God, ^(B)waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life.

¹⁵ that whoever believes ^(A)in him ^(B)may have eternal life.^[a]

²⁰ And we know that the Son of God has come and ^(A)has given us understanding, so that we may know ^(B)him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and ^(C)eternal life.

^2 (A)the life ^(B)was made manifest, and we have seen it, and ^(C)testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, ^(D)which was with the Father and ^(E)was made manifest to us—

⁴⁶ And these will go away ^(A)into eternal punishment, but the righteous ^(B)into ^(C)eternal life.”

⁷ so that ^(A)being justified by his grace we might become ^(B)heirs ^(C)according to the hope of eternal life.

The Rich Ruler

^18 (A)And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to ^(B)inherit eternal life?” ¹⁹ And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. ²⁰ You know the commandments: ^(C)‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” ²¹ And he said, ^(D)“All these I have kept from my youth.” ²² When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. ^(E)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have ^(F)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” ^23 (G)But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. ²⁴ Jesus, seeing that he had become sad, said, ^(H)“How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter ^(I)the kingdom of God! ²⁵ For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter ^(J)the kingdom of God.” ²⁶ Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” ²⁷ But he said, ^(K)“What is impossible with man is possible with God.” ²⁸ And Peter said, “See, ^(L)we have left our homes and followed you.” ²⁹ And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, ^(M)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers^[a] or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, ³⁰ who will not receive ^(N)many times more ^(O)in this time, and in ^(P)the age to come eternal life.”
