⁶ Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”^(A)

¹⁴ The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God^(A) but considers them foolishness,^(B) and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial^(A)

³¹ Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me,^(B) for it is written:

²³ Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown^(A) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”^(B)

²⁴ “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.^{(C) 25} I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.^{(D) 26} Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.^{(E) 27} And there were many in Israel with leprosy^[a] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”^(F)

²⁸ All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. ²⁹ They got up, drove him out of the town,^(G) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff.

²⁷ As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”^(A)

²⁸ He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God^(B) and obey it.”^(C)

¹⁰ At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,

³² Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.^{(A) 33} As it is written:

⁶⁶ From this time many of his disciples^(A) turned back and no longer followed him.
