12 For (A)the word of God is living and (B)active, (C)sharper than any (D)two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and (E)discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And (F)no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are (G)naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

12 For the word of God(A) is alive(B) and active.(C) Sharper than any double-edged sword,(D) it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.(E) 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.(F) Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to (A)the tradition of (B)the elders, (C)but eat with (D)defiled hands?” And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you (E)hypocrites, as it is written,

(F)“‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their heart is far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as (G)doctrines the commandments of men.’

You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.”

And he said to them, “You have a fine way of (H)rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! 10 For Moses said, (I)‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, (J)‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ 11 But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban”’ (that is, given to God)[a] 12 then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, 13 thus (K)making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”

  1. Mark 7:11 Or an offering

So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(A) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.’[a](B)

You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(C)

And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[b] your own traditions!(D) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[c](E) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[d](F) 11 But you say(G) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(H) by your tradition(I) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”
