26 So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, “O Baal, [a]hear us!” But there was (A)no voice; no one answered. Then they [b]leaped about the altar which they had made.

27 And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry [c]aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28 So they cried aloud, and (B)cut themselves, as was their custom, with [d]knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. 29 And when midday was past, (C)they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was (D)no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention.

Then they called(A) on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response;(B) no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.”(C) 28 So they shouted louder and slashed(D) themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice.(E) But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.(F)

26 (A)And now I pray, O God of Israel, let Your word come true, which You have spoken to Your servant David my father.

27 “But (B)will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the (C)heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built! 28 Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O Lord my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You today: 29 that Your eyes may be open toward this [a]temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, (D)‘My name shall be (E)there,’ that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes (F)toward this place. 30 (G)And may You hear the supplication of Your servant and of Your people Israel, when they pray toward this place. Hear in heaven Your dwelling place; and when You hear, forgive.

31 “When anyone sins against his neighbor, and is forced to take (H)an oath, and comes and takes an oath before Your altar in this temple, 32 then hear in heaven, and act, and judge Your servants, (I)condemning the wicked, bringing his way on his head, and justifying the righteous by giving him according to his righteousness.

33 (J)“When Your people Israel are defeated before an enemy because they have sinned against You, and (K)when they turn back to You and confess Your name, and pray and make supplication to You in this temple, 34 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your people Israel, and bring them back to the land which You gave to their (L)fathers.

35 (M)“When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain because they have sinned against You, when they pray toward this place and confess Your name, and turn from their sin because You afflict them, 36 then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of Your servants, Your people Israel, that You may (N)teach them (O)the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on Your land which You have given to Your people as an inheritance.

37 (P)“When there is famine in the land, pestilence or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers; when their enemy besieges them in the land of their [b]cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is; 38 whatever prayer, whatever supplication is made by anyone, or by all Your people Israel, when each one knows the plague of his own heart, and spreads out his hands toward this temple: 39 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and forgive, and act, and give to everyone according to all his ways, whose heart You know (for You alone (Q)know the hearts of all the sons of men), 40 (R)that they may fear You all the days that they live in the land which You gave to our fathers.

41 “Moreover, concerning a foreigner, who is not of Your people Israel, but has come from a far country for Your name’s sake 42 (for they will hear of Your great name and Your (S)strong hand and Your outstretched arm), when he comes and prays toward this temple, 43 hear in heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, (T)that all peoples of the earth may know Your name and (U)fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that this temple which I have built is called by Your name.

44 “When Your people go out to battle against their enemy, wherever You send them, and when they pray to the Lord toward the city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name, 45 then hear in heaven their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their [c]cause.

46 “When they sin against You (V)(for there is no one who does not sin), and You become angry with them and deliver them to the enemy, and they take them captive (W)to the land of the enemy, far or near; 47 (X)yet when they [d]come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of those who took them captive, (Y)saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong, we have committed wickedness’; 48 and when they (Z)return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who led them away captive, and (AA)pray to You toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name: 49 then hear in heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their [e]cause, 50 and forgive Your people who have sinned against You, and all their transgressions which they have transgressed against You; and (AB)grant them compassion before those who took them captive, that they may have compassion on them 51 (for (AC)they are Your people and Your inheritance, whom You brought out of Egypt, (AD)out of the iron furnace), 52 (AE)that Your eyes may be open to the supplication of Your servant and the supplication of Your people Israel, to listen to them whenever they call to You. 53 For You separated them from among all the peoples of the earth to be Your inheritance, (AF)as You spoke by Your servant Moses, when You brought our fathers out of Egypt, O Lord God.”

26 And now, God of Israel, let your word that you promised(A) your servant David my father come true.

27 “But will God really dwell(B) on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven,(C) cannot contain(D) you. How much less this temple I have built! 28 Yet give attention to your servant’s prayer and his plea for mercy, Lord my God. Hear the cry and the prayer that your servant is praying in your presence this day. 29 May your eyes be open(E) toward(F) this temple night and day, this place of which you said, ‘My Name(G) shall be there,’ so that you will hear the prayer your servant prays toward this place. 30 Hear the supplication of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray(H) toward this place. Hear(I) from heaven, your dwelling place, and when you hear, forgive.(J)

Judge between your servants, condemning the guilty by bringing down on their heads what they have done, and vindicating the innocent by treating them in accordance with their innocence.(L)

33 “When your people Israel have been defeated(M) by an enemy because they have sinned(N) against you, and when they turn back to you and give praise to your name, praying and making supplication to you in this temple,(O) 34 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your people Israel and bring them back to the land you gave to their ancestors.

35 “When the heavens are shut up and there is no rain(P) because your people have sinned(Q) against you, and when they pray toward this place and give praise to your name and turn from their sin because you have afflicted them, 36 then hear from heaven and forgive the sin of your servants, your people Israel. Teach(R) them the right way(S) to live, and send rain(T) on the land you gave your people for an inheritance.

37 “When famine(U) or plague(V) comes to the land, or blight(W) or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers,(X) or when an enemy besieges them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, 38 and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel—being aware of the afflictions of their own hearts, and spreading out their hands(Y) toward this temple— 39 then hear(Z) from heaven, your dwelling place. Forgive(AA) and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since you know(AB) their hearts (for you alone know every human heart), 40 so that they will fear(AC) you all the time they live in the land(AD) you gave our ancestors.

41 “As for the foreigner(AE) who does not belong to your people Israel but has come from a distant land because of your name— 42 for they will hear(AF) of your great name and your mighty hand(AG) and your outstretched arm—when they come and pray toward this temple, 43 then hear from heaven, your dwelling place. Do whatever the foreigner asks of you, so that all the peoples of the earth may know(AH) your name and fear(AI) you, as do your own people Israel, and may know that this house I have built bears your Name.(AJ)

44 “When your people go to war against their enemies, wherever you send them, and when they pray(AK) to the Lord toward the city you have chosen and the temple I have built for your Name, 45 then hear from heaven their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause.(AL)

46 “When they sin against you—for there is no one who does not sin(AM)—and you become angry with them and give them over to their enemies, who take them captive(AN) to their own lands, far away or near; 47 and if they have a change of heart in the land where they are held captive, and repent and plead(AO) with you in the land of their captors and say, ‘We have sinned, we have done wrong, we have acted wickedly’;(AP) 48 and if they turn back(AQ) to you with all their heart(AR) and soul in the land of their enemies who took them captive, and pray(AS) to you toward the land you gave their ancestors, toward the city you have chosen and the temple(AT) I have built for your Name;(AU) 49 then from heaven, your dwelling place, hear their prayer and their plea, and uphold their cause. 50 And forgive your people, who have sinned against you; forgive all the offenses they have committed against you, and cause their captors to show them mercy;(AV) 51 for they are your people and your inheritance,(AW) whom you brought out of Egypt, out of that iron-smelting furnace.(AX)

52 “May your eyes be open(AY) to your servant’s plea and to the plea of your people Israel, and may you listen to them whenever they cry out to you.(AZ) 53 For you singled them out from all the nations of the world to be your own inheritance,(BA) just as you declared through your servant Moses when you, Sovereign Lord, brought our ancestors out of Egypt.”
