Matthew 24:37-25:30

37 And as were the days of Noah, so shall be the [a]coming of the Son of man. 38 For as in those days which were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered into the ark, 39 and they knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall be the [b]coming of the Son of man. 40 Then shall two men be in the field; one is taken, and one is left: 41 two women shall be grinding at the mill; one is taken, and one is left. 42 Watch therefore: for ye know not on what day your Lord cometh. 43 [c]But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what watch the thief was coming, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be [d]broken through. 44 Therefore be ye also ready; for in an hour that ye think not the Son of man cometh.

45 Who then is the faithful and wise [e]servant, whom his lord hath set over his household, to give them their food in due season? 46 Blessed is that [f]servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing. 47 Verily I say unto you, that he will set him over all that he hath. 48 But if that evil [g]servant shall say in his heart, My lord tarrieth; 49 and shall begin to beat his fellow-servants, and shall eat and drink with the drunken; 50 the lord of that [h]servant shall come in a day when he expecteth not, and in an hour when he knoweth not, 51 and shall [i]cut him asunder, and appoint his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

25 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, who took their [j]lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 2 And five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 3 For the foolish, when they took their [k]lamps, took no oil with them: 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their [l]lamps. 5 Now while the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 6 But at midnight there is a cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come ye forth to meet him. 7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their [m]lamps. 8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our [n]lamps are going out. 9 But the wise answered, saying, Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you: go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 10 And while they went away to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage feast: and the door was shut. 11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. 13 Watch therefore, for ye know not the day nor the hour.

14 For it is as when a man, going into another country, called his own [o]servants, and delivered unto them his goods. 15 And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his several ability; and he went on his journey. 16 Straightway he that received the five talents went and traded with them, and made other five talents. 17 In like manner he also that received the two gained other two. 18 But he that received the one went away and digged in the earth, and hid his lord’s money. 19 Now after a long time the lord of those [p]servants cometh, and maketh a reckoning with them. 20 And he that received the five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: lo, I have gained other five talents. 21 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful [q]servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 22 And he also that received the two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: lo, I have gained other two talents. 23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful [r]servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will set thee over many things; enter thou into the joy of thy lord. 24 And he also that had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art a hard man, reaping where thou didst not sow, and gathering where thou didst not scatter; 25 and I was afraid, and went away and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, thou hast thine own. 26 But his lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful [s]servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I did not scatter; 27 thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back mine own with interest. 28 Take ye away therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him that hath the ten talents. 29 For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not, even that which he hath shall be taken away. 30 And cast ye out the unprofitable [t]servant into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

37 For [a]the (A)coming of the Son of Man will be (B)just like the days of Noah. 38 For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, (C)marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that (D)Noah entered the ark, 39 and they did not [b]understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the (E)coming of the Son of Man be. 40 Then there will be two men in the field; one [c]will be taken and one [d]will be left. 41 (F)Two women will be grinding at the [e](G)mill; one [f]will be taken and one [g]will be left.

Be Ready for His Coming

42 “Therefore (H)be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. 43 But [h]be sure of this, that (I)if the head of the house had known (J)at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be [i]broken into. 44 For this reason (K)you also must be ready; for (L)the Son of Man is coming at an hour when you do not think He will.

45 “(M)Who then is the (N)faithful and (O)sensible slave whom his [j]master (P)put in charge of his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 Blessed is that slave whom his [k]master finds so doing when he comes. 47 Truly I say to you that (Q)he will put him in charge of all his possessions. 48 But if that evil slave says in his heart, ‘My [l]master [m]is not coming for a long time,’ 49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; 50 the [n]master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, 51 and will [o]cut him in pieces and [p]assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be (R)weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Parable of Ten Virgins

25 “Then (S)the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their (T)lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were (U)prudent. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the (V)prudent took oil in flasks along with their lamps. 5 Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep. 6 But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ 7 Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish said to the prudent, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 But the (W)prudent answered, ‘No, there will not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 And while they were going away to make the purchase, the bridegroom came, and those who were (X)ready went in with him to (Y)the wedding feast; and (Z)the door was shut. 11 Later the other virgins also came, saying, ‘(AA)Lord, lord, open up for us.’ 12 But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 (AB)Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day nor the hour.

Parable of the Talents

14 “(AC)For it is just like a man (AD)about to go on a journey, who called his own slaves and entrusted his possessions to them. 15 To one he gave five [q](AE)talents, to another, two, and to another, one, each according to his own ability; and he (AF)went on his journey. 16 Immediately the one who had received the five (AG)talents went and traded with them, and gained five more talents. 17 In the same manner the one who had received the two talents gained two more. 18 But he who received the one talent went away, and dug a hole in the ground and hid his [r]master’s money.

19 “Now after a long time the master of those slaves *came and *(AH)settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received the five (AI)talents came up and brought five more talents, saying, ‘Master, you entrusted five talents to me. See, I have gained five more talents.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (AJ)faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will (AK)put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your [s]master.’

22 “Also the one who had received the two (AL)talents came up and said, ‘Master, you entrusted two talents to me. See, I have gained two more talents.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (AM)faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’

24 “And the one also who had received the one (AN)talent came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you scattered no seed. 25 And I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the ground. See, you have what is yours.’

26 “But his master answered and said to him, ‘You wicked, lazy slave, you knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I scattered no seed. 27 Then you ought to have put my money [t]in the bank, and on my arrival I would have received my money back with interest. 28 Therefore take away the talent from him, and give it to the one who has the ten talents.’

29 “(AO)For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30 Throw out the worthless slave into (AP)the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

37 As it was in the days of Noah,(A) so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage,(B) up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.(C) 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left.(D) 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.(E)

42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.(F) 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming,(G) he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready,(H) because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

45 “Who then is the faithful and wise servant,(I) whom the master has put in charge of the servants in his household to give them their food at the proper time? 46 It will be good for that servant whose master finds him doing so when he returns.(J) 47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge of all his possessions.(K) 48 But suppose that servant is wicked and says to himself, ‘My master is staying away a long time,’ 49 and he then begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.(L) 50 The master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he is not aware of. 51 He will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.(M)

The Parable of the Ten Virgins

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like(N) ten virgins who took their lamps(O) and went out to meet the bridegroom.(P) 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise.(Q) 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.(R)

6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’(S)

9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet.(T) And the door was shut.

11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’

12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’(U)

13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.(V)

The Parable of the Bags of Gold(W)

14 “Again, it will be like a man going on a journey,(X) who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them. 15 To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag,[a] each according to his ability.(Y) Then he went on his journey. 16 The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more. 17 So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. 18 But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

19 “After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.(Z) 20 The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’

21 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(AA) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

22 “The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’

23 “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.(AB) Come and share your master’s happiness!’

24 “Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. 25 So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? 27 Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest.

28 “‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. 29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them.(AC) 30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(AD)
