Dinala si Jesus kay Pilato(A)
27 Kinaumagahan, nagpulong ang mga punong pari at mga pinuno ng bayan[a] kung paano nilang maipapapatay si Jesus. 2 Siya'y kanilang iginapos at dinala kay Pilato na gobernador.
Ang Pagkamatay ni Judas(B)
3 Nang(C) malaman ng taksil na si Judas na si Jesus ay nahatulang mamatay, nagsisi siya at isinauli sa mga punong pari at mga pinuno ng bayan ang tatlumpung pirasong pilak. 4 Sinabi niya, “Nagkasala ako! Ipinagkanulo ko ang dugo ng taong walang kasalanan.”
“Ano ang pakialam namin sa iyo? Bahala ka sa buhay mo!” sagot nila.
5 Inihagis ni Judas sa loob ng Templo ang tatlumpung pirasong pilak, at pagkaalis doon, siya'y nagbigti.
6 Pinulot ng mga punong pari ang mga pirasong pilak. Sinabi nila, “Labag sa Kautusan na ilagay ang salaping ito sa kabang-yaman ng Templo sapagkat bayad ito sa buhay ng isang tao.” 7 Nagkaisa sila na ang salaping iyon ay ibili ng bukid ng isang magpapalayok, upang gawing libingan ng mga dayuhan. 8 Mula noon hanggang ngayon, ang bukid na iyon ay tinatawag na “Bukid ng Dugo.”
9 Sa(D) gayon, natupad ang sinabi ni propeta Jeremias: “Kinuha nila ang tatlumpung pirasong pilak, ang halagang katumbas niya ayon sa mga Israelita, 10 at ginamit ito upang bilhin ang bukid ng isang magpapalayok, ayon sa iniutos sa akin ng Panginoon.”
Si Jesus sa Harap ni Pilato(E)
11 Iniharap si Jesus sa gobernador at siya'y tinanong nito, “Ikaw nga ba ang Hari ng mga Judio?”
Sumagot si Jesus, “Ikaw na ang may sabi.” 12 Ngunit nang paratangan siya ng mga punong pari at ng mga pinuno ng bayan, hindi siya umimik.
13 Kaya't sinabi sa kanya ni Pilato, “Hindi mo ba naririnig ang marami nilang paratang laban sa iyo?” 14 Ngunit hindi pa rin siya umimik kaya't labis na nagtaka ang gobernador.
Hinatulang Mamatay si Jesus(F)
15 Nakaugalian na ng gobernador na tuwing Paskwa ay magpalaya ng isang bilanggo na hinihiling ng taong-bayan. 16 Noon ay may isang kilalang bilanggo na kilala sa kasamaan na ang pangalan ay [Jesus] Barabbas.[b] 17 Nang magkatipon ang mga tao ay tinanong sila ni Pilato, “Sino ang ibig ninyong palayain ko, si Jesus Barabbas, o si Jesus na tinatawag na ‘Cristo’?” 18 Alam ni Pilato na naiinggit lamang sila kaya nila isinakdal si Jesus.
19 Bukod dito, nang si Pilato ay nakaupo sa hukuman, nagpasabi ang kanyang asawa, “Huwag kang makialam sa usapin ng taong iyan. Wala siyang kasalanan. Labis akong nahirapan dahil sa aking panaginip kagabi tungkol sa kanya.”
20 Ang mga tao nama'y hinikayat ng mga punong pari at ng mga pinuno ng bayan[c] na hilingin kay Pilato na si Barabbas ang palayain at si Jesus ay ipapatay. 21 Muli silang tinanong ng gobernador, “Sino sa dalawa ang nais ninyong palayain ko?”
“Si Barabbas!” sigaw ng mga tao.
22 Sinabi sa kanila ni Pilato, “Kung gayon, ano ang gagawin ko kay Jesus, na tinatawag na Cristo?”
At sumagot ang lahat, “Ipako siya sa krus!”
23 “Bakit? Ano ang nagawa niyang masama?” tanong ni Pilato.
Ngunit lalo pang lumakas ang kanilang sigawan, “Ipako siya sa krus!”
24 Nang(G) makita ni Pilato na wala siyang magagawa, at malamang pa'y magkagulo, nagpakuha siya ng tubig at naghugas ng kamay sa harap ng mga tao. “Wala akong pananagutan sa dugo[d] ng taong ito. Ito'y pananagutan ninyo!” sabi niya.
25 Sumagot naman ang mga tao, “Pananagutan namin at ng aming mga anak ang dugo[e] niya.”
26 Pinalaya nga ni Pilato si Barabbas at ipinahagupit naman si Jesus. Pagkatapos, ibinigay siya sa kanila upang ipako sa krus.
Hinamak ng mga Kawal si Jesus(H)
27 Si Jesus ay dinala ng mga kawal ng gobernador sa palasyo nito,
at nagkatipon ang buong batalyon sa paligid niya. 28 Siya'y hinubaran nila at sinuotan ng isang balabal na matingkad na pula. 29 Kumuha sila ng matitinik na baging, ginawa itong korona at ipinutong sa kanya. 32 Paglabas ng lungsod, nakita ng mga sundalo si Simon na taga-Cirene. Pilit nilang ipinapasan sa kanya ang krus ni Jesus. 33 Dumating sila sa lugar na tinatawag na Golgotha, na ang kahulugan ay “Pook ng Bungo.” 34 Binigyan(J) nila si Jesus ng alak na hinaluan ng apdo, ngunit nang matikman niya iyon ay hindi niya ininom.
35 Nang(K) maipako na siya sa krus, pinaghati-hatian ng mga kawal ang kanyang mga damit sa pamamagitan ng palabunutan, 36 naupo sila at siya'y binantayan. 37 Inilagay nila sa kanyang ulunan ang paratang laban sa kanya na may nakasulat na ganito, “Ito'y si Jesus na Hari ng mga Judio.” 38 At may dalawang magnanakaw na ipinako rin sa krus, isa sa gawing kanan at isa sa kaliwa.
39 Kinukutya(L) siya ng mga nagdaraan. Pailing-iling nilang 40 sinasabi,(M) “Di ba't ikaw ang gigiba ng Templo at muling magtatayo nito sa loob ng tatlong araw? Iligtas mo ngayon ang iyong sarili! Kung ikaw nga ang Anak ng Diyos, bumabâ ka sa krus!”
41 Kinutya rin siya ng mga punong pari, mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan at mga pinuno ng bayan.[f] Sinabi nila, 42 “Iniligtas niya ang iba ngunit hindi niya mailigtas ang sarili! Di ba siya ang Hari ng Israel? Bumabâ lang siya ngayon sa krus ay maniniwala na kami sa kanya! 43 Nananalig(N) siya sa Diyos, at sinasabi niyang siya ang Anak ng Diyos. Tingnan natin kung ililigtas siya ng Diyos!”
44 Nilait din siya ng mga magnanakaw na ipinakong kasama niya.
Ang Pagkamatay ni Jesus(O)
45 Mula sa tanghaling tapat hanggang sa ikatlo ng hapon ay nagdilim sa buong lupain. 46 Nang(P) mag-aalas tres na ng hapon, sumigaw si Jesus, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” na ang ibig sabihi'y “Diyos ko, Diyos ko, bakit mo ako pinabayaan?”
47 Ito'y narinig ng ilan sa mga nakatayo roon kaya't sinabi nila, “Tinatawag niya si Elias!” 48 May(Q) isang tumakbo kaagad at kumuha ng espongha, binasâ ito ng maasim na alak, inilagay sa dulo ng isang patpat at ipinasipsip kay Jesus.
49 Sinabi naman ng iba, “Hintay muna, tingnan natin kung darating si Elias upang iligtas siya!”
50 Muling sumigaw si Jesus nang malakas at siya'y nalagutan ng hininga.
51 Biglang(R) nahati ang tabing ng Templo, mula sa itaas hanggang sa ibaba. Nayanig ang lupa at nabiyak ang mga bato. 52 Nabuksan ang mga libingan at muling nabuhay ang maraming banal na namatay. 53 Lumabas sila ng libingan, at pagkatapos na muling mabuhay si Jesus, sila'y pumasok sa banal na lungsod at doo'y marami ang nakakita sa kanila.
54 Nasindak ang opisyal at ang mga kawal na nagbabantay kay Jesus nang maramdaman nila ang lindol at masaksihan ang lahat ng nangyari. Sabi nila, “Tunay na siya'y Anak ng Diyos!”
55 Naroon(S) din ang maraming mga babaing nakatanaw mula sa malayo. Sila'y sumunod kay Jesus mula pa sa Galilea, at naglingkod sa kanya. 56 Kabilang sa kanila si Maria Magdalena, si Maria na ina ni Santiago at ni Jose, at ang asawa ni Zebedeo.

Baka pumunta doon ang kanyang mga alagad at kunin ang bangkay at pagkatapos ay ipamalitang siya'y muling nabuhay. Ang pandarayang ito ay magiging masahol pa kaysa una.”
65 Sinabi sa kanila ni Pilato, “Kumuha kayo ng mga kawal at pabantayan ninyong mabuti ang libingan.”
66 Kaya pumunta nga sila roon at tiniyak na hindi mabubuksan ang libingan, nilagyan ng tatak ang batong panakip sa libingan, at pinabantayan ito sa kawal.

Judas' dood
27 Het werd ochtend. De leiders van de priesters en de leiders van het volk besloten dat Jezus gedood moest worden. 2 Ze boeiden Hem en brachten Hem naar Pontius Pilatus, de Romeinse bestuurder van Judea.[a]
3 Judas zag dat Jezus ter dood veroordeeld werd. Toen kreeg hij spijt dat hij Hem had verraden. Hij bracht de 30 zilverstukken terug naar de leiders van de priesters en de leiders van het volk. 4 Hij riep: "Ik heb verkeerd gedaan! Ik heb een onschuldig mens verraden!" Maar ze zeiden: "Wat kan ons dat schelen! Je moet zelf maar zien wat ervan komt!" 5 Judas gooide de 30 zilverstukken de tempel in. Toen liep hij weg en hing zichzelf op.
6 De leiders van de priesters namen de zilverstukken en zeiden: "We kunnen dat geld niet in de geldkist van de tempel doen. Want dit geld heeft bloed gekost." 7 Daarom besloten ze er de akker van de pottenbakker van te kopen. Daar zouden ze dan een begraafplaats voor buitenlanders van maken. 8 Daarom wordt dat stuk land nog steeds 'Bloedakker' genoemd. 9 Zo gebeurde wat vroeger al door de profeet Jeremia is gezegd: 'Ze namen de 30 zilverstukken. Dat was wat ze de man van het volk van Israël waard vonden. 10 Ze kochten daarmee de akker van de pottenbakker. Dit moest ik zeggen van de Heer God.'[b]
Jezus bij Pilatus
11 Toen werd Jezus naar stadhouder Pilatus gebracht. Pilatus ondervroeg Hem: "Ben Jij de koning van de Joden?"[c] Jezus zei: "U zegt het zelf." 12 De leiders van de priesters en de leiders van het volk vertelden waar ze Hem van beschuldigden. Maar Jezus antwoordde niets. 13 Toen zei Pilatus tegen Hem: "Hoor Je dan niet waar ze Je allemaal van beschuldigen?" 14 Maar Jezus antwoordde hem op geen enkele vraag. Daar was Pilatus erg verbaasd over.
15 Pilatus had de gewoonte om op het feest een gevangene vrij te laten. De mensen mochten zelf beslissen wie ze vrij wilden hebben. 16 Op dat moment zat er een gevaarlijk man gevangen: Barabbas. 17 Omdat ze nu toch bij hem waren, vroeg Pilatus aan de mensen: "Wie willen jullie dat ik deze keer vrijlaat: Barabbas, of Jezus die de Messias wordt genoemd?" 18 Want Pilatus wist dat ze Jezus gevangen hadden genomen omdat ze jaloers waren.
19 Terwijl hij daar zo zat om over Jezus recht te spreken, kreeg hij een bericht van zijn vrouw. Ze liet hem weten: "Bemoei je niet met deze onschuldige man. Want ik heb vannacht in een droom veel verdriet om Hem gehad." 20 Maar de leiders van de priesters en de leiders van het volk stookten de mensen op. Ze moesten Pilatus vragen om Barabbas vrij te laten en Jezus te laten doden. 21 Pilatus vroeg: "Wie van de twee moet ik van jullie vrijlaten?" Ze riepen: "Barabbas!" 22 Pilatus zei tegen hen: "Wat moet ik dan doen met Jezus die de Messias wordt genoemd?" Ze riepen allemaal: "Hij moet aan het kruis!" 23 Pilatus zei: "Wat heeft Hij dan voor kwaad gedaan?" Maar ze schreeuwden nog harder: "Aan het kruis met Hem!" 24 Pilatus zag dat niets hielp om Jezus vrij te krijgen. Het dreigde een hele rel te gaan worden. Hij liet een kom water brengen. Hij waste daarmee zijn handen als teken dat hij niet schuldig was aan de dood van Jezus. En hij zei: "Ik ben onschuldig aan de dood van deze man die onschuldig is. Jullie moeten zelf maar zien wat ervan komt." 25 Het hele volk riep: "Het kan ons niet schelen wat ervan komt. Wij en onze kinderen zullen de gevolgen dragen van zijn dood!" 26 Toen liet Pilatus Barabbas vrij. Maar Jezus gaf hij aan de soldaten. Ze moesten Hem eerst zweepslagen geven en Hem daarna kruisigen.
Jezus wordt bespot
27 De soldaten namen Jezus mee naar het gerechtsgebouw. Daar riepen ze alle soldaten erbij. 28 Ze trokken Hem zijn kleren uit en deden Hem een paarse mantel om. 29 Ze vlochten een kroon van doorntakken en zetten die op zijn hoofd. Ook gaven ze Hem een rieten stok als staf in de hand. Toen vielen ze voor Hem op hun knieën en zeiden spottend: "We groeten U, koning van de Joden!" 30 Ze bespuugden Hem, pakten de rieten stok en sloegen Hem ermee op zijn hoofd. 31 Toen ze er genoeg van hadden om Hem te bespotten en belachelijk te maken, deden ze Hem de mantel weer af. Ze trokken Hem zijn eigen kleren weer aan. Daarna namen ze Hem mee om Hem te kruisigen. 32 Onderweg dwongen ze een man om Jezus' kruis te dragen. Dat was Simon uit Cyrene.
Jezus aan het kruis
33 Ze kwamen bij de plek die Golgota heet. Dat betekent 'Schedelplaats'. 34 Ze wilden Jezus zure wijn gemengd met gal te drinken geven. Maar toen Hij proefde wat het was, wilde Hij het niet drinken. 35 Ze spijkerden Hem aan het kruis. Daarna gingen ze zitten dobbelen om zijn kleren te verdelen. Zo gebeurde wat de profeet vroeger had gezegd: 'Ze hebben mijn kleren onder elkaar verdeeld. Ze hebben er om geloot.' 36 Ze bleven daar zitten om Hem te bewaken. 37 Boven zijn hoofd hingen ze een bord waarop stond waarom Hij de doodstraf had gekregen. Er stond op: 'Jezus, de koning van de Joden.' 38 Naast Hem werden twee moordenaars gekruisigd. De één links en de ander rechts van Hem.
39 De mensen die voorbij kwamen, scholden Hem uit. 40 Ze schudden spottend hun hoofd en zeiden: "Hé, Jij die de tempel afbreekt en in drie dagen weer opbouwt! Red Jezelf, als Je de Zoon van God bent! Kom eens van dat kruis af!" 41 De leiders van de priesters, de wetgeleerden en de leiders van het volk en de Farizeeërs zeiden hetzelfde. 42 Ze zeiden ook: "Andere mensen heeft Hij gered, maar Zichzelf kan Hij niet redden! Hij is toch de koning van Israël? Laat Hij dan van het kruis afkomen! Dan zullen we in Hem geloven. 43 Hij vertrouwt toch zo op God? Laat God Hem dan nu redden als Hij echt van Hem houdt. Want Hij heeft toch gezegd dat Hij Gods Zoon is?" 44 Ook de moordenaars die tegelijk met Hem waren gekruisigd, zeiden zulke dingen tegen Hem.
45 Om ongeveer twaalf uur werd het helemaal donker in het hele land. Dat duurde tot ongeveer drie uur 's middags. 46 Toen riep Jezus luid: "Eli, eli, lama sabachtani!" Dat betekent: 'Mijn God, mijn God, waarom heeft U Mij verlaten?' 47 Een paar mensen die erbij stonden, zeiden: "Hoor, Hij roept Elia!" 48 Eén van de mensen liep naar Jezus toe. Hij doopte een spons in zure wijn, stak die op een stok en gaf Hem te drinken. 49 Maar anderen zeiden: "Niet doen. Laten we eens kijken of Elia Hem komt redden." 50 Maar Jezus gaf een luide schreeuw en stierf.
51 Op dat moment scheurde het gordijn in de tempel van boven naar beneden in tweeën.[d] De aarde beefde en de rotsen scheurden. 52 De graven gingen open en veel gestorven gelovigen werden weer levend. 53 Ze kwamen uit de graven. En nadat Jezus uit de dood was opgestaan, gingen ze naar de heilige stad Jeruzalem. Heel veel mensen hebben hen gezien.
54 De legerhoofdman en de soldaten die Jezus bewaakten, zagen de aardbeving en wat er allemaal gebeurde. Ze werden doodsbang en zeiden: "Ja, dit was écht Gods Zoon!"
55 Er stonden in de verte ook veel vrouwen toe te kijken. Ze hadden Jezus gevolgd uit Galilea, om Hem te dienen. 56 Ook Maria Magdalena, Maria de moeder van Jakobus en Jozef, en de moeder van de zonen van Zebedeüs waren er.
Jezus' begrafenis
57 Toen het avond was geworden, kwam er een man bij Pilatus. Hij was een leerling van Jezus en heette Jozef. Hij was een rijk man uit Arimatea. 58 Hij vroeg aan Pilatus of hij Jezus mocht begraven. Toen gaf Pilatus het bevel dat ze Jezus' lichaam aan deze Jozef moesten meegeven. 59 Jozef nam het lichaam en wikkelde het in linnen doeken. Hij had voor zichzelf een nieuw graf in de rotsen laten uithakken. Daar legde hij Jezus in. 60 Daarna rolde hij een grote steen voor de ingang van het graf en vertrok. 61 Maria Magdalena en de andere Maria gingen tegenover het graf zitten.
62 De volgende dag, de dag na de voorbereiding,[e] gingen de leiders van de priesters en de Farizeeërs samen naar Pilatus en zeiden: 63 "Heer, we bedachten dat die oplichter toen Hij nog leefde heeft gezegd: 'Na drie dagen zal Ik uit de dood opstaan.' 64 Wilt u daarom alstublieft het graf tot de derde dag laten bewaken. Anders komen zijn leerlingen Hem 's nachts nog weghalen. En dan zeggen ze tegen de mensen dat Hij uit de dood is opgestaan. Dat zou alles nog erger maken dan eerst." 65 Pilatus zei tegen hen: "Hier hebben jullie een paar soldaten. Ga en doe wat jullie willen." 66 Ze gingen weg, verzegelden de steen en zetten de soldaten op wacht bij het graf.

- Mattheüs 27:2 Israël was veroverd door de Romeinen en een soort provincie van het Romeinse Rijk geworden. Pilatus was de bestuurder van een deel van die provincie. De Joden mochten niet zelf iemand kruisigen. Dat mochten alleen de Romeinen. Daarom moesten ze Pilatus een reden geven om Hem de doodstraf te geven.

- Mattheüs 27:11 Voor verschil van mening over de Joodse godsdienst zou Pilatus Jezus niet laten doden. Maar wel als Jezus zou zeggen dat Hij een koning van de Joden was. Dat zou rebellie tegen de Romeinse keizer zijn. Daarom is dat de beschuldiging waarmee de Joden bij Pilatus komen.
- Mattheüs 27:51 Dat gordijn hing tussen de heilige kamer en de allerheiligste kamer. Niemand mocht de allerheiligste kamer binnengaan. Alleen de hogepriester mocht één keer per jaar naar binnen gaan om een offer te brengen voor vergeving van de ongehoorzaamheid van de mensen aan God. Lees Exodus 26:31-33 en Leviticus 16:2, 3 en 34.

Judas Hangs Himself
27 Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed.(A) 2 So they bound him, led him away and handed him over(B) to Pilate the governor.(C)
3 When Judas, who had betrayed him,(D) saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver(E) to the chief priests and the elders. 4 “I have sinned,” he said, “for I have betrayed innocent blood.”
“What is that to us?” they replied. “That’s your responsibility.”(F)
5 So Judas threw the money into the temple(G) and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.(H)
6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, “It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.” 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been called the Field of Blood(I) to this day. 9 Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:(J) “They took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10 and they used them to buy the potter’s field, as the Lord commanded me.”[a](K)

11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”(M)
“You have said so,” Jesus replied.
12 When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.(N) 13 Then Pilate asked him, “Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?”(O) 14 But Jesus made no reply,(P) not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.
15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the festival to release a prisoner(Q) chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[b] Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(R) 18 For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat,(S) his wife sent him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent(T) man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream(U) because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.(V)
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”(W) Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
24 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar(X) was starting, he took water and washed his hands(Y) in front of the crowd. “I am innocent of this man’s blood,”(Z) he said. “It is your responsibility!”(AA)
25 All the people answered, “His blood is on us and on our children!”(AB)
26 Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged,(AC) and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus(AD)
27 Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium(AE) and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28 They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him,(AF) 29 and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. “Hail, king of the Jews!” they said.(AG) 30 They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.(AH) 31 After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.(AI)
The Crucifixion of Jesus(AJ)
32 As they were going out,(AK) they met a man from Cyrene,(AL) named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross.(AM) 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”).(AN) 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall;(AO) but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(AP) 36 And sitting down, they kept watch(AQ) over him there. 37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him,(AR) one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads(AS) 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days,(AT) save yourself!(AU) Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!”(AV) 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel!(AW) Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe(AX) in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him(AY) now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.
The Death of Jesus(AZ)
45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness(BA) came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli,[c] lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).[d](BB)
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar,(BC) put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.(BD)
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple(BE) was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split(BF) 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and[e] went into the holy city(BG) and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding(BH) Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”(BI)
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs.(BJ) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,[f] and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(BK)
The Burial of Jesus(BL)
57 As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. 58 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own new tomb(BM) that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting there opposite the tomb.
The Guard at the Tomb
62 The next day, the one after Preparation Day, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. 63 “Sir,” they said, “we remember that while he was still alive that deceiver said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(BN) 64 So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, his disciples may come and steal the body(BO) and tell the people that he has been raised from the dead. This last deception will be worse than the first.”
65 “Take a guard,”(BP) Pilate answered. “Go, make the tomb as secure as you know how.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by putting a seal(BQ) on the stone(BR) and posting the guard.(BS)

2 And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,
4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that.
5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself.
6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.
8 Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.

63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.
64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.
65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.
66 So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

Jesus Faces Pilate(K)

Taking the Place of Barabbas(P)
15 (Q)Now at the feast the governor was accustomed to releasing to the multitude one prisoner whom they wished. 16 And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called [b]Barabbas. 17 Therefore, when they had gathered together, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that they had handed Him over because of (R)envy.
19 While he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent to him, saying, “Have nothing to do with that just Man, for I have suffered many things today in a dream because of Him.”
