25 »Entonces el reino de los cielos será semejante(A) a diez vírgenes que tomando sus lámparas(B) , salieron a recibir al novio. 2 Y cinco de ellas eran insensatas, y cinco prudentes(C). 3 Porque las insensatas, al tomar sus lámparas, no tomaron aceite consigo, 4 pero las prudentes(D)tomaron aceite en frascos juntamente con sus lámparas. 5 Al tardarse el novio, a todas les dio sueño y se durmieron. 6 Pero a medianoche se oyó[a]un clamor: “¡Aquí está el novio! Salgan a recibirlo.”
7 »Entonces todas aquellas vírgenes se levantaron y arreglaron sus lámparas. 8 Y las insensatas dijeron a las prudentes: “Dennos de su aceite, porque nuestras lámparas se apagan”. 9 Pero las prudentes(E)respondieron: “No, no sea que no haya suficiente para nosotras y para ustedes; vayan más bien a los que venden y compren para ustedes”. 10 Mientras ellas iban a comprar, vino el novio, y las que estaban preparadas(F)entraron con él al banquete de bodas(G), y se cerró la puerta(H). 11 Después vinieron también las otras vírgenes, diciendo: “Señor, señor, ábrenos(I)”. 12 Pero él respondió: “En verdad les digo que no las conozco”. 13 Velen[b], pues no saben ni el día ni la hora[c](J).
Parábola de los talentos
14 »(K) Porque el reino de los cielos es como un hombre que al emprender un viaje(L) , llamó a sus siervos y les encomendó sus bienes. 15 Y a uno le dio cinco talentos (108 kilos de plata)(M), a otro dos y a otro uno, a cada uno conforme a su capacidad; y se fue de viaje(N). 16 El que había recibido los cinco talentos(O), enseguida fue y negoció con ellos y ganó otros cinco talentos. 17 Asimismo el que había recibido los dos talentos (43.2 kilos) ganó otros dos. 18 Pero el que había recibido uno, fue y cavó en la tierra y escondió el dinero de su señor.
19 »Después de mucho tiempo vino* el señor de aquellos siervos, y arregló* cuentas con ellos(P) . 20 Y llegando el que había recibido los cinco talentos(Q), trajo otros cinco talentos, diciendo: “Señor, usted me entregó cinco talentos; mire, he ganado otros cinco talentos”. 21 Su señor le dijo: “Bien, siervo bueno y fiel; en lo poco fuiste fiel, sobre mucho te pondré; entra en el gozo de tu señor(R)”. 22 Llegando también el de los dos talentos(S), dijo: “Señor, usted me entregó dos talentos; mire, he ganado otros dos talentos”. 23 Su señor le dijo: “Bien, siervo bueno y fiel; en lo poco fuiste fiel, sobre mucho te pondré; entra en el gozo de tu señor(T)”.
24 »Pero llegando también el que había recibido un talento (21.6 kilos)(U) , dijo: “Señor, yo sabía que usted es un hombre duro, que siega donde no sembró y recoge donde no ha esparcido, 25 y tuve miedo, y fui y escondí su talento en la tierra; mire, aquí tiene lo que es suyo”. 26 Pero su señor le dijo: “Siervo malo y perezoso, sabías que siego donde no sembré, y que recojo donde no esparcí. 27 Debías entonces haber puesto mi dinero en el banco[d], y al llegar yo hubiera recibido mi dinero[e]con intereses. 28 Por tanto, quítenle el talento y dénselo al que tiene los diez talentos (216 kilos de plata)”.
29 »Porque a todo el que tiene, más se le dará, y tendrá en abundancia; pero al que no tiene, aun lo que tiene se le quitará(V) . 30 Y al siervo inútil, échenlo en las tinieblas de afuera; allí será el llanto y el crujir de dientes(W).
El juicio final
31 »Pero cuando el Hijo del Hombre venga en Su gloria, y todos los ángeles con Él(X) , entonces Él se sentará en el trono de Su gloria(Y) ; 32 y serán reunidas delante de Él todas las naciones; y separará a unos de otros, como el pastor separa las ovejas de los cabritos(Z). 33 Y pondrá las ovejas a Su derecha(AA)y los cabritos a la izquierda(AB).
34 »Entonces el Rey dirá a los de Su derecha: “Vengan, benditos de Mi Padre, hereden el reino preparado para ustedes(AC) desde la fundación del mundo(AD) . 35 Porque tuve hambre, y ustedes me dieron de comer(AE); tuve sed, y me dieron de beber; fui extranjero, y me recibieron(AF); 36 estaba desnudo, y me vistieron(AG); enfermo, y me visitaron(AH); en la cárcel, y vinieron a Mí(AI)”. 37 Entonces los justos le responderán, diciendo: “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento y te dimos de comer, o sediento y te dimos de beber? 38 ¿Y cuándo te vimos como extranjero y te recibimos, o desnudo y te vestimos? 39 ¿Cuándo te vimos enfermo o en la cárcel y vinimos a Ti?”. 40 El Rey les responderá(AJ): “En verdad les digo que en cuanto lo hicieron a uno de estos hermanos Míos, aun a los más pequeños, a Mí lo hicieron(AK)”.
41 »Entonces dirá también a los de Su izquierda: “Apártense de Mí(AL) , malditos, al fuego eterno(AM) que ha sido preparado para el diablo y sus ángeles(AN) . 42 Porque tuve hambre, y ustedes no me dieron de comer; tuve sed, y no me dieron de beber; 43 fui extranjero, y no me recibieron; estaba desnudo, y no me vistieron; enfermo, y en la cárcel, y no me visitaron”. 44 Entonces ellos también responderán: “Señor, ¿cuándo te vimos hambriento o sediento, o como extranjero, o desnudo, o enfermo, o en la cárcel, y no te servimos?”. 45 Él entonces les responderá: “En verdad les digo que en cuanto ustedes no lo hicieron a uno de los más pequeños de estos, tampoco a Mí lo hicieron”. 46 Estos irán al castigo eterno(AO), pero los justos a la vida eterna(AP)».

25 “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like (A)ten virgins who took their lamps[a] and went to meet (B)the bridegroom.[b] 2 Five of them were foolish, and five were (C)wise. 3 For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them, 4 but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. 5 As the bridegroom (D)was delayed, they all became drowsy and slept. 6 But (E)at midnight there was a cry, ‘Here is the bridegroom! 14 (O)“For (P)it will be like a man (Q)going on a journey, who called his servants[c] and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five (R)talents,[d] to another two, to another one, (S)to each according to his ability. Then he (T)went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and (U)dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now (V)after a long time the master of those servants came and (W)settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and (X)faithful servant.[e] (Y)You have been faithful over a little; (Z)I will set you over much. The Final Judgment
31 (AK)“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, (AL)then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 Before him (AM)will be gathered (AN)all the nations, and (AO)he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates (AP)the sheep from the goats. 33 And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34 Then (AQ)the King will say to (AR)those on his right, ‘Come, you (AS)who are blessed by my Father, (AT)inherit (AU)the kingdom (AV)prepared for you (AW)from the foundation of the world. 35 For (AX)I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you (AY)gave me drink, (AZ)I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 (BA)I was naked and you clothed me, (BB)I was sick and you (BC)visited me, (BD)I was in prison and you came to me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 And (BE)the King will answer them, (BF)‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these (BG)my brothers,[f] you did it to me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, (BH)‘Depart from me, you (BI)cursed, into (BJ)the eternal fire prepared for (BK)the devil and his angels. 42 For (BL)I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, naked and you did not clothe me, sick and in prison and you did not visit me.’ 44 Then they also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to you?’ 45 Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, (BM)you did not do it to me.’ 46 And these will go away (BN)into eternal punishment, but the righteous (BO)into (BP)eternal life.”

3 Les folles, en prenant leurs lampes, ne prirent point d'huile avec elles;
4 mais les sages prirent, avec leurs lampes, de l'huile dans des vases.
5 Comme l'époux tardait, toutes s'assoupirent et s'endormirent.
6 Au milieu de la nuit, on cria: Voici l'époux, allez à sa rencontre!
7 Alors toutes ces vierges se réveillèrent, et préparèrent leurs lampes.
8 Les folles dirent aux sages: Donnez-nous de votre huile, car nos lampes s'éteignent.
9 Les sages répondirent: Non; il n'y en aurait pas assez pour nous et pour vous; allez plutôt chez ceux qui en vendent, et achetez-en pour vous.

Come out to meet him!’ 7 Then all the virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ 9 The wise ones replied, ‘No, for there may not be enough for both us and you. You had better go to the merchants and buy some.’
10 “While they went off to purchase it, the bridegroom arrived, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. Then the door was locked. 11 Afterward, the other virgins returned, and they cried out, ‘Lord! Lord! Open the door for us!’ 12 But he replied,‘Amen, I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13 Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
14 The Parable of the Talents.[c]“Again, the kingdom of heaven will be like a man going on a journey who summoned his servants and entrusted his property to them. 15 To one he gave five talents,[d] to another two talents, to a third one talent—to each according to his ability. Then he set forth on his journey.
16 “The servant who had received the five talents promptly went to invest them and gained five more. 17 In the same manner, the servant who had received the two talents gained two more. 18 But the servant who had received the one talent went off and dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.
19 “After a long period of time, the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them. 20 The one who had received the five talents came forward, bringing an additional five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you gave me five talents. Behold, I have gained five more.’ 21 His master said to him,‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give you much greater responsibilities. Come and share your master’s joy.’
22 “Next, the one who had received the two talents also came forward and said, ‘Master, you gave me two talents. Behold, I have gained two more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. Since you have been faithful in small matters, I will give you much greater responsibilities. Come and share your master’s joy.’
24 “Then the one who had received the one talent came forward and said, ‘Master, I knew that you were a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter seed. 25 Therefore, out of fear I went off and hid your talent in the ground. Behold, I give it back to you.’
26 “His master replied, ‘You wicked and lazy servant. So you knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered! 27 Then you should have deposited my money with the bankers, and on my return I would have gotten back my money with interest.
28 “ ‘Therefore, take the talent from him and give it to the one with the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he does have will be taken away. 30 As for this worthless servant, cast him outside into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
31 The Solemn Judgment at the End of Time.[e]“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will place the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me; 36 I was naked and you clothed me; I was ill and you took care of me; I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will say to him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and give you something to eat, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? 39 When did we see you ill or in prison and come to visit you?’ 40 And the King will answer, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brethren of mine, you did for me.’
41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you did not give me anything to eat; I was thirsty and you did not give me anything to drink; 43 I was a stranger and you did not welcome me; I was naked and you did not give me any clothing; I was ill and in prison and you did not visit me.’
44 “Then they will ask him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison and not minister to you?’ 45 He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you failed to do for one of the least of these brethren of mine, you failed to do for me.’ 46 And they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous will enter eternal life.”

- Matthew 25:1 The parable of the ten virgins illustrates a fundamental thought: we must wait with watchful perseverance for the coming of Christ glorified, likened to the arrival of a bridegroom. In the dazzling nuptial ceremony of Palestine, the bride awaited the bridegroom while merrymaking with friends. Around midnight the bridegroom would come accompanied by lamps. After an initial explosion of joy, the cortège would return to the house of the bridegroom, where the banquet would be celebrated.
- Matthew 25:1 Then: at the time of the Second Coming.
- Matthew 25:14 The parable of the talents completes the preceding one. The Christian religion is not a simple passive expectation. It demands a complete commitment. One must make fruitful the gifts given by God while awaiting the Lord’s glorious return.
- Matthew 25:15 Talents: a talent was equivalent to 6000 denarii, that is, to the salary for 6000 days of work.
- Matthew 25:31 This passage constitutes the conclusion of the eschatological discourse with the description of the Last Judgment. In the second part of the great discourse (Mt 24:37), the individual judgment was repeatedly indicated. Now there comes before us the supreme Judge, Jesus Christ in glory, who at the end of time will judge all peoples, without distinction between Jew and Gentile, and will separate the good from the wicked in accord with everyone’s works.
