Dommen afsiges, og Jesus føres til Pilatus(A)

15 Så snart det blev lyst, afsagde det jødiske råd den officielle dom. Rådet bestod af ypperstepræsterne, de skriftlærde og en række andre ledere. Det blev besluttet, at Jesus skulle bindes og føres til den romerske guvernør, der hed Pilatus.

Da de ankom til den romerske garnisons hovedkvarter, spurgte Pilatus: „Er du jødernes konge?”

„Det kan man godt sige,” svarede Jesus.

Nu kom ypperstepræsterne frem med deres anklager. Pilatus vendte sig mod Jesus: „Hvorfor siger du ingenting? Du hører jo alt det, de anklager dig for.” Men Jesus svarede stadig ikke et ord, og det undrede Pilatus sig meget over.

Pilatus bliver presset til at lade Jesus korsfæste(B)

Der var tradition for, at Pilatus hvert år i anledning af påsken løslod en jødisk fange. Folket måtte selv vælge, hvem det skulle være. På det tidspunkt var der en mand ved navn Barabbas, som sad fængslet sammen med andre oprørere. De havde under opstanden begået mord.

Mængden begyndte nu at trænge ind på Pilatus. De ville have en fange frigivet, som de plejede. „Vil I have, at jeg skal frigive jødernes konge?” spurgte Pilatus. 10 Han var nemlig godt klar over, at det var af ren og skær misundelse, at ypperstepræsterne havde slæbt Jesus for retten.

11 Men ypperstepræsterne fik folkemængden overtalt til at bede om at få Barabbas sat fri.

12 „Hvad vil I så have, jeg skal gøre med den mand, som I kalder jødernes konge?” spurgte Pilatus. 13 „Korsfæst ham!” råbte de tilbage.

14 „Hvorfor det?” sagde Pilatus. „Hvad ondt har han gjort?”

Men de råbte blot endnu højere: „Korsfæst ham!”

15 Pilatus besluttede, at det var bedst at bøje sig for mængden, så han løslod Barabbas og gav ordre til, at Jesus skulle piskes og derefter korsfæstes.

De romerske soldater gør nar af jødernes konge(C)

16 Soldaterne førte Jesus ind i kasernen og kaldte hele garnisonen sammen. 17 De klædte ham ud som konge med en purpurrød kappe og en krone flettet af tornede grene på hovedet. 18 Så begyndte de at råbe: „Længe leve jødernes konge!” 19 Derefter slog de ham i hovedet med en kæp, spyttede på ham og kastede sig på knæ foran ham. 20 Da de til sidst blev trætte af at gøre nar af ham, trak de den røde kappe af ham og gav ham hans eget tøj på. Derefter førte de ham af sted for at korsfæste ham.

Jesus bliver korsfæstet og derefter hånet af de jødiske ledere(D)

21 En forbipasserende, Simon fra Kyrene, som var far til Alexander og Rufus, var netop på vej ind i byen. Ham tvang soldaterne til at bære Jesu kors.

22 De førte Jesus ud til det sted, som kaldes Golgata (det betyder „Hovedskalsstedet”). 23 Her ville soldaterne give ham vin med et bedøvelsesmiddel i, men han ville ikke have det. 24 Så naglede de ham til korset, og derefter gav de sig til at rafle om hans tøj.[a]

25 Klokken var omkring ni om formiddagen, da korsfæstelsen fandt sted. 26 På korset over Jesu hoved blev anbragt et skilt, der viste anklagen mod ham. Der stod: „Jødernes konge”.

27 Samme morgen blev også to forbrydere korsfæstet, og deres kors blev rejst på hver sin side af Jesus.[b]

29 Folk, der kom forbi, rystede på hovedet og hånede ham: „Nå, så det var dig, der ville rive templet ned og bygge det op igen inden tre dage! 30 Kom dog ned fra det kors og red dig selv!”

31 Også ypperstepræsterne og de skriftlærde hånede Jesus. „Den er god med ham,” sagde de til hinanden. „Andre har han reddet, men sig selv kan han ikke redde. 32 Og han skulle være ‚Messias, Israels konge’? Lad ham nu stige ned fra korset, så skal vi nok tro på ham!”

Også de to korsfæstede forbrydere hånede ham.

Jesus dør(E)

33 Ved tolvtiden blev der mørkt over hele landet, og mørket varede til klokken tre. 34 Klokken tre råbte Jesus højt: „Eloi, Eloi! Lema sabaktani?” Det betyder: „Min Gud! Min Gud! Hvorfor har du forladt mig?”[c]

35 Soldaterne, som stod vagt, forstod ikke, hvad han sagde, men nogle mente, han kaldte på Elias. 36 En af dem løb hen og hældte billig, sur vin på en svamp. Derefter anbragte han den på en stang og rakte den op til Jesus, for at han kunne drikke. „Lad os vente og se,” sagde han. „Måske kommer Elias og tager ham ned.”

37 Da udstødte Jesus et højt råb og udåndede.

38 I samme øjeblik blev forhænget foran indgangen til det allerhelligste rum i templet flænget i to dele fra øverst til nederst.

39 Da den romerske officer, der stod ved siden af korset, så alt det, der skete i forbindelse med Jesu død, udbrød han: „Den mand var virkelig en gudesøn!”[d]

40 Nogle kvinder stod på afstand og iagttog det hele. Blandt dem var Maria Magdalene, Salome, og den Maria, som var mor til Jakob den Lille og Joses. 41 De havde fulgt Jesus og sørget for mad til ham, da han gik rundt i Galilæa. Desuden var der en del andre kvinder fra Galilæa, som var fulgt med til Jerusalem.

Jesus lægges i graven(F)

42-43 Alt det her skete om fredagen, dagen før sabbatten. Sent om eftermiddagen tog Josef fra Arimatæa mod til sig, opsøgte Pilatus og bad om at få Jesu lig udleveret. Josef var et anset medlem af det jødiske råd og en mand, som ventede, at Guds rige skulle komme. 44 Pilatus undrede sig over, at Jesus allerede skulle være død. Han tilkaldte den officer, som havde haft ansvar for korsfæstelsen, og spurgte ham, om det var rigtigt. 45 Da officeren bekræftede det, fik Josef lov til at få Jesu lig udleveret. 46 Først gik han hen og købte et hvidt lagen, hvorefter han fik taget Jesus ned fra korset og svøbt ind i lagenet. Derpå blev liget lagt i en gravhule, som var hugget ud i en klippe, og der blev rullet en stor sten for indgangen. 47 Maria Magdalene og Maria, Joses’ mor, stod og så, hvor Jesus blev lagt.

Jesus Delivered to Pilate

15 (A)And as soon as it was morning, the chief priests (B)held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. And (C)they bound Jesus and (D)led him away and (E)delivered him over to (F)Pilate. (G)And Pilate asked him, (H)“Are you the King of the Jews?” And he answered him, (I)“You have said so.” And the chief priests accused him of many things. And Pilate again asked him, (J)“Have you no answer to make? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus (K)made no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Pilate Delivers Jesus to Be Crucified

(L)Now at the feast he used to release for them one prisoner for whom they asked. And among the rebels in prison, who had (M)committed murder (N)in the insurrection, there was a man called Barabbas. And the crowd came up and began to ask Pilate to do as he usually did for them. And he answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he perceived that (O)it was out of envy that the chief priests had delivered him up. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release for them Barabbas instead. 12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with (P)the man you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they cried out again, “Crucify him.” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? (Q)What evil has he done?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him.” 15 So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having (R)scourged[a] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (S)And the soldiers led him away inside (T)the palace (that is, (U)the governor's headquarters),[b] and they called together the whole (V)battalion.[c] 17 And they clothed him in (W)a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. 18 And they began to salute him, (X)“Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they were striking his head with a reed and (Y)spitting on him and (Z)kneeling down in homage to him. 20 And when they had (AA)mocked him, they stripped him of (AB)the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they (AC)led him out to crucify him.

The Crucifixion

21 (AD)And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 (AE)And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with (AF)myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and (AG)divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And (AH)it was the third hour[d] when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, (AI)“The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two (AJ)robbers, (AK)one on his right and one on his left.[e] 29 And (AL)those who passed by derided him, (AM)wagging their heads and saying, (AN)“Aha! (AO)You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, (AP)“He saved others; (AQ)he cannot save himself. 32 Let (AR)the Christ, (AS)the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may (AT)see and believe.” (AU)Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

The Death of Jesus

33 And when the sixth hour[f] had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.[g] 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus (AV)cried with a loud voice, (AW)“Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with (AX)sour wine, put it on a reed (AY)and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus (AZ)uttered a loud cry and (BA)breathed his last. 38 And (BB)the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 (BC)And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he[h] breathed his last, he said, (BD)“Truly this man was the Son[i] of God!”

40 There were also (BE)women looking on (BF)from a distance, among whom were (BG)Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and (BH)Salome. 41 When he was in Galilee, they followed him and (BI)ministered to him, and there were also many other women who (BJ)came up with him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (BK)And when evening had come, since it was (BL)the day of Preparation, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea, (BM)a respected member of the council, who (BN)was also himself looking for the kingdom of God, took courage and went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died.[j] And summoning (BO)the centurion, he asked him whether he was already dead. 45 And when he learned from (BP)the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. 46 And Joseph[k] bought (BQ)a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and (BR)laid him in a tomb (BS)that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled (BT)a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (BU)Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid.

Jesus Taken to Pilate

15 And as soon as morning came, after[a] formulating a plan, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes and the whole Sanhedrin, tied up Jesus, led him[b] away, and handed him[c] over to Pilate. And Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” And he answered him and[d] said, “You say so.” And the chief priests began to accuse[e] him of many things. So Pilate asked him again, saying, “Do you not answer anything? See how many charges[f] they are bringing against you!” But Jesus did not answer anything further, so that Pilate was astonished.

Pilate Releases Barabbas

Now at each feast he customarily released[g] for them one prisoner whom they requested. And the one named Barabbas[h] was imprisoned with the rebels who had committed murder in the rebellion. And the crowd came up and[i] began to ask him to do as he customarily did[j] for them. So Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?” 10 (For he realized that the chief priests had handed him over because of envy.) 11 But the chief priests incited the crowd so that he would release for them Barabbas[k] instead. 12 So Pilate answered and said to them again, “Then what do you want me to do with the one whom you call the king of the Jews?” 13 And they shouted again, “Crucify him!” 14 And Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” But they shouted even louder, “Crucify him!”

15 So Pilate, because he[l] wanted to satisfy[m] the crowd, released for them Barabbas. And after[n] he had Jesus flogged, he handed him[o] over so that he could be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.

17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,

18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!

19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.

20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.

36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.

37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.

38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.

39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.

40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.

42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

43 Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.
