The Second Prediction of His Death

³⁰ Then^(A) they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but he did not want anyone to know it.^{(B) 31} For he was teaching^(C) his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man^(D) is going to be betrayed^[a] into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise^(E) three days later.”^{(F) 32} But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask him.^(G)

His Death and Resurrection Predicted

²¹ From^(A) then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day.^{(B) 22} Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “Oh no,^[a] Lord! This will never happen to you!”

²³ Jesus turned and told Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you’re not thinking about God’s concerns^[b] but human concerns.”^(C)

Take Up Your Cross

²⁴ Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.^{(D) 25} For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.^{(E) 26} For what will it benefit someone if he gains the whole world yet loses his life? Or what will anyone give in exchange for his life?^{(F) 27} For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father,^(G) and then he will reward each according to what he has done. ²⁸ Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”^(H)

The Second Prediction of His Death

²² As^(A) they were gathering together^[a] in Galilee, Jesus told them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men. ²³ They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised up.” And they were deeply distressed.

The Third Prediction of His Death

¹⁷ While going up to Jerusalem,^(A) Jesus took the twelve disciples aside privately and said to them on the way, ¹⁸ “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. The Son of Man will be handed over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death.^{(B) 19} They will hand him over to the Gentiles^(C) to be mocked, flogged,^[a] and crucified, and on the third day he will be raised.”^[b]

The Plot to Kill Jesus

26 When Jesus had finished saying all these things,^(A) he told his disciples, ² “You know^[a] that the Passover takes place after two days, and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.”^(B)

²² saying,^(A) “It is necessary that the Son of Man^(B) suffer many things^(C) and be rejected^(D) by the elders, chief priests, and scribes,^(E) be killed, and be raised the third day.”^(F)

Take Up Your Cross

²³ Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after^[a] me, let him deny himself,^(G) take up his cross daily,^[b] and follow me.^{(H) 24} For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.^{(I) 25} For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?^{(J) 26} For whoever is ashamed of me and my words,^(K) the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory^(L) and that of the Father and the holy angels.^{(M) 27} Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death^(N) until they see the kingdom of God.”^(O)
