In those days, when much people [when much company of people] was with Jesus, and had not what they should eat, when his disciples were called together, he said to them [he saith to them],

I have ruth on the people, for lo! now the third day they abide me, and they have not what to eat; [I have ruth on the company of people, for lo! now by three days they sustain, or abide, me, and have not what they shall eat;]

and if I let them go [and if I leave them] fasting into their houses, they shall fail in the way; for some of them came from far.

And his disciples answered to him, Whereof shall a man be able to fill them with loaves here in wilderness?

And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? Which said, Seven.

And he commanded the people to sit down on the earth. And he took the seven loaves, and did thankings, and brake, and gave to his disciples, that they should set forth. And they setted forth to the people [And they set forth to the company].

And they had a few small fishes; and he blessed them, and commanded, that they were set forth [and he blessed them, and commanded to be set forth].

And they ate, and were fulfilled; and they took up that that was left of [the] remnants, seven baskets. [And they ate, and were filled; and they took up that left of reliefs, seven baskets.]

And they that ate, were as four thousand of men; and he let them go [and he left them].

10 And at once he went up into a boat, with his disciples, and came into the coasts of Dalmanutha. [And anon he went up into a boat, with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.]

11 And the Pharisees went out, and began to dispute with him, and asked a token of him from heaven, and tempted him.[a]

12 And he sorrowing within in spirit, said, What seeketh this generation a token? Truly I say to you, a token shall not be given to this generation.[b]

13 And he left them, and went up again into a boat, and went over the sea.

14 And they forgot to take bread, and they had not with them but one loaf in the boat.

15 And he commanded them, and said [saying], See ye, and beware of the sourdough of the Pharisees, and of the sourdough of Herod.

16 And they thought, and said one to another, For we have not loaves. [And they thought one to another, saying, For we have not bread.]

17 And when this thing was known, Jesus said to them, What think ye, for ye have not loaves [Jesus saith to them, What think ye, for ye have not bread]? Yet ye know not, neither understand; yet ye have your heart blinded.

18 Ye having eyes, see not, and ye having ears, hear not; neither ye have mind,

19 when I brake five loaves among five thousand, and how many baskets [how many coffins] full of broken meat took ye up? They say to him, Twelve.

20 When also seven loaves among four thousand of men, how many baskets [full] of broken meat took ye up? And they say to him, Seven.[c]

21 And he said to them, How understand ye not yet?

22 And they came to Bethsaida, and they brought to him a blind man, and they prayed him, that he would touch him. [And they come to Bethsaida, and they bring to him a blind man, and prayed him, that he should touch him.]

23 And when he had taken the blind man's hand, he led him out of the street, and he spat into his eyes, and set [put] his hands on him; and he asked him [he asked him], if he saw any thing.

24 And he beheld, and said, I see men as trees walking.

25 Afterward again he set his hands on his eyes [Afterward again he put hands on his eyes], and he began to see, and he was restored, so that he saw clearly all things.

26 And he sent him into his house, and said [saying], Go into thine house; and if thou goest into the street, say to no man.

27 And Jesus entered [in] and his disciples into the castles of Caesarea of Philippi. And in the way he asked his disciples, and said to them [saying to them], Whom say men that I am?

28 Which answered to him, and said [saying], Some say, John Baptist; others say, Elias; and others say [but others say], as one of the prophets.

29 Then he saith to them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answered, and said to him [Peter answering, saith to him], Thou art Christ.

30 And he charged them, that they should not say of him to any man. [And he threatened them that they should not say to any man of him.]

31 And he began to teach them, that it behooveth man's Son to suffer many things, and to be reproved of the elder men, and of the highest priests, and of the scribes [and scribes], and to be slain, and after three days, to rise again.

32 And he spake openly the word. And Peter took him, and began to blame him, and said, Lord, be thou merciful to thee, for this shall not be.[d]

33 And he turned, and saw his disciples, and menaced Peter, and said [saying], Go after me, [thou] Satan; for thou savourest not those things [for thou understandest not those things] that be of God, but those things that be of men.

34 And when the people was called together, with his disciples, he said to them, If any man will come after me, deny he himself, and take his cross, and follow he me [deny he himself, and take his cross, and follow me].

35 For he that will make safe his life, shall lose it; and he that loseth his life for me, and for the gospel, shall make it safe. [Soothly who so will make his soul, that is, his life, safe, he shall lose it; forsooth he that shall lose his soul, that is, his life, for me and the gospel, shall make it safe.]

36 For what profiteth it to a man[e], if he win all the world, and do impairing to his [own] soul?

37 or what (ex)changing shall a man give for his soul?

38 But who that acknowledgeth me [Forsooth who that shall acknowledge me] and my words in this generation adulterous and sinful, also man's Son shall acknowledge him, when he shall come in the glory of his Father, with his angels.

The miracle of the seven loaves. The Pharisees ask for a sign. The leaven of the Pharisees and of Herod. The blind man receives his sight.

In the days when there was a great multitude, and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him and said to them, I have compassion on this people, because they have now been with me three days, and have nothing to eat. And if I send them away to their own houses without eating, they might faint on the way, because some of them have come from far. And his disciples answered him, Where could anyone obtain bread here in this remote place to satisfy all these? And he asked them, How many loaves do you have? They said, Seven.

And he directed the people to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, gave thanks, broke, and gave to his disciples to set before them. And they set them before the people. And they had a few small fishes, and he blessed them, and directed them also to be set before the people. And they ate and were filled. And they took up of the broken food that was left seven baskets full. And those who had eaten were in number about 4,000. And Jesus sent them away.

10 And shortly he entered into a boat with his disciples, and went into the region of Dalmanutha. 11 And the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, and testing him. 12 And he sighed in his spirit and said, Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I say to you, there will be no sign given to this generation.

13 And he left them and went into the boat again, and departed over the water.

14 And the disciples had forgotten to take bread with them, and had in the boat with them no more than one loaf. 15 And he charged them, saying, Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. 16 And they deliberated among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.

17 And when Jesus knew this, he said to them, Why are you troubled because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts still blinded? 18 Do you have eyes, but not see? And do you have ears, and not hear? Do you not remember? 19 When I broke five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up? They said to him, Twelve.

20 When I broke seven among four thousand, how many baskets of the leftover fragments did you take up? They said, Seven.

21 And he said to them, How is it that you do not understand?

22 And he came to Bethsaida, and people brought a blind man to him and asked him to touch him. 23 And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town, and spat in his eyes, and put his hands upon him, and asked him whether he could see anything. 24 And the man looked up and said, I see the people, for I see them walk, as if they were trees. 25 After that Jesus put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him see. And his sight was restored, and he saw every person clearly. 26 And Jesus sent him home to his house, saying, Do not go into the town, nor tell anyone in town about this.

27 And Jesus went out with his disciples into the towns around the city called Caesarea Philippi. And on the way he asked his disciples, saying, Who do people say that I am? 28 And they answered, Some say that you are John the Baptist, some say Elijah, and some, one of the prophets. 29 And he said to them, But who do you say that I am? Peter answered and said to him, You are the Christ. 30 And he charged them to tell no one of it.

31 And he began to teach them how the Son of man must suffer many things, and would be reproved by the elders and by the high priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days arise again. 32 And he spoke this word plainly. But Peter took him aside and began to chide him. 33 Then he turned around and looked on his disciples, and rebuked Peter, saying, Get behind me, Satan, for you savour not the things of God, but the things of men.

34 And he called the people to him with his disciples also, and said to them, Whoever would follow me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever would save his life, will lose it. But whoever loses his life for my sake and the sake of the gospel, shall save it. 36 What does it profit a man, if he should win all the world and lose his own soul? 37 Or what can a person give to redeem his soul? 38 Whosoever therefore is ashamed of me and of my words among this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

In (A)those days, when there was a very great multitude, and had nothing to eat, Jesus called his disciples to him, and said unto them,

I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with me three days, and have nothing to eat.

And if I send them away fasting to their own houses, they would [a]faint by the way: for some of them came from far.

Then his disciples answered him, Whence can a man satisfy these with bread here in the wilderness?

And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.

Then he commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, brake them, and gave to his disciples to set before them, and they did set them before the people.

They had also a few small fishes: and when he had given thanks, he commanded them also to be set before them,

So they did eat, and were sufficed, and they took up of the broken meat that was left, seven baskets full.

(And they that had eaten, were about four thousand) so he sent them away.

10 (B)And anon he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

11 (C)[b]And the Pharisees [c]came forth, and began to dispute with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, and tempting him.

12 Then he [d]sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, Why doth this generation seek a sign? Verily I say unto you, [e]a sign shall not be given unto this generation.

13 ¶ So he left them, and went into the ship again, and departed to the other side.

14 (D)And they had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the ship with them, but one loaf.

15 [f]And he charged them, saying, Take heed, and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

16 [g]And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is, because we have no bread.

17 And when Jesus knew it, he said unto them, Why reason you thus, because ye have no bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your hearts yet hardened?

18 Have ye eyes, and see not? and have ye ears, and hear not? and do ye not remember?

19 (E)When I brake the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of broken meat took ye up? They said unto him, Twelve.

20 And when I brake seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of the leavings of broken meat took ye up? And they said, Seven.

21 Then he said unto them, [h]How is it that ye understand not?

22 [i]And he came to Bethsaida, and they brought a blind man unto him, and desired him to touch him.

23 Then he took the blind by the hand, and led him out of the town, and spat in his eyes, and put his hands upon him, and asked him, if he saw ought.

24 And he looked up, and said, I [j]see men: for I see them walking like trees.

25 After that, he put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him [k]look again. And he was restored to his sight, and saw every man afar off clearly.

26 [l]And he sent him home to his house, saying, Neither go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

27 (F)[m]And Jesus went out, and his disciples into the towns of Caesarea Philippi. And by the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am?

28 And they answered, Some say, John Baptist: and some, Elijah: and some, one of the Prophets.

29 And he said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Then Peter answered, and said unto him, Thou art that Christ.

30 [n]And he sharply charged them, that concerning him they should tell no man.

31 [o]Then he began to teach them that the son of man must suffer many things, and should be reproved of the Elders, and of the high Priests, and of the Scribes, and be slain, and within three days rise again.

32 [p]And he spake that thing boldly. Then Peter took him aside, and began to rebuke him.

33 Then he turned back and looked on his disciples, and rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou [q]understandest not the things that are of God, but the things that are of men.

34 [r]And he called the people unto him with his disciples, and said unto them, (G)Whosoever will follow me, let him forsake himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

35 For whosoever will (H)save his life, shall lose it: but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the Gospel’s, he shall save it.

36 [s]For what shall it profit a man, though he should win the whole world, if he lose his soul?

37 Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

38 (I)For whosoever shall be ashamed of me, and of my words among this adulterous and sinful generation, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed also, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy Angels.
