Feeding the Four Thousand(A)
8 In those days, (B)the multitude being very great and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him and said to them, 2 “I have (C)compassion on the multitude, because they have now continued with Me three days and have nothing to eat. 3 And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint on the way; for some of them have come from afar.”
4 Then His disciples answered Him, “How can one satisfy these people with bread here in the wilderness?”
5 (D)He asked them, “How many loaves do you have?”
And they said, “Seven.”
6 So He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground. And He took the seven loaves and gave thanks, broke them and gave them to His disciples to set before them; and they set them before the multitude. 7 They also had a few small fish; and (E)having blessed them, He said to set them also before them. 8 So they ate and were filled, and they took up seven large baskets of leftover fragments. 9 Now those who had eaten were about four thousand. And He sent them away, 10 (F)immediately got into the boat with His disciples, and came to the region of Dalmanutha.
The Pharisees Seek a Sign(G)
11 (H)Then the Pharisees came out and began to dispute with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven, testing Him. 12 But He (I)sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, (J)no sign shall be given to this generation.”
Beware of the Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod(K)
13 And He left them, and getting into the boat again, departed to the other side. 14 (L)Now [a]the disciples had forgotten to take bread, and they did not have more than one loaf with them in the boat. 15 (M)Then He charged them, saying, “Take heed, beware of the [b]leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”
16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have no bread.”
17 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “Why do you reason because you have no bread? (N)Do you not yet perceive nor understand? Is your heart [c]still hardened? 18 Having eyes, do you not see? And having ears, do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 (O)When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up?”
They said to Him, “Twelve.”
20 “Also, (P)when I broke the seven for the four thousand, how many large baskets full of fragments did you take up?”
And they said, “Seven.”
21 So He said to them, “How is it (Q)you do not understand?”
A Blind Man Healed at Bethsaida
22 Then He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a (R)blind man to Him, and begged Him to (S)touch him. 23 So He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town. And when (T)He had spit on his eyes and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything.
24 And he looked up and said, “I see men like trees, walking.”
25 Then He put His hands on his eyes again and made him look up. And he was restored and saw everyone clearly. 26 Then He sent him away to his house, saying, [d]“Neither go into the town, (U)nor tell anyone in the town.”
Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ(V)
27 (W)Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, “Who do men say that I am?”
28 So they answered, (X)“John the Baptist; but some say, (Y)Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.”
29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
Peter answered and said to Him, (Z)“You are the Christ.”
30 (AA)Then He strictly warned them that they should tell no one about Him.
Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection(AB)
31 And (AC)He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be (AD)rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be (AE)killed, and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. 33 But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He (AF)rebuked Peter, saying, “Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not [e]mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”
Take Up the Cross and Follow Him(AG)
34 When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, (AH)“Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 35 For (AI)whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. 36 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? 37 Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 (AJ)For whoever (AK)is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

8 Er waren veel mensen naar Jezus komen luisteren. Toen Hij zag dat zij geen eten meer hadden, riep Hij zijn leerlingen bij Zich. 2 ‘Ik heb met die mensen te doen,’ zei Hij. ‘Zij zijn hier al drie dagen en hebben niets meer te eten. 3 Ik kan ze zo niet naar huis laten gaan. Sommigen komen van heel ver. Ze zouden onderweg flauwvallen van de honger.’ 4 ‘Waar halen we hier ooit brood vandaan?’ vroegen zijn leerlingen. ‘Voor al die mensen! Hier woont immers niemand!’ 5 ‘Hoeveel broden hebben jullie bij je?’ vroeg Hij. 6 ‘Zeven,’ antwoordden zij. Hij zei dat iedereen op de grond moest gaan zitten. Daarna nam Hij de zeven broden, dankte God ervoor en brak ze in stukken. Zijn leerlingen brachten het brood naar de mensen. 7 Er waren ook nog een paar visjes. Hij dankte God ervoor en zei tegen zijn leerlingen dat ze die ook aan de mensen moesten geven. 8 Iedereen at tot hij genoeg had. Er bleef zelfs nog over. Zeven manden vol. 9 En er waren wel zoʼn vierduizend mensen!
10 Jezus stuurde de mensen naar huis. Direct daarna stapte Hij met zijn leerlingen in de boot en stak over naar Dalmanuta. 11 Er kwamen Farizeeën naar Jezus toe en gingen met Hem in debat. ‘Kunt U God laten bewijzen dat Hij U heeft gestuurd?’ vroegen zij. Zij wilden Hem op de proef stellen. 12 Met een diepe zucht zei Jezus: ‘Waarom wilt u een bewijs hebben? Dat krijgt u niet!’ 13 Hij draaide Zich om en liet hen staan. Hij stapte in de boot en ging naar de overkant van het meer. 14 Maar zijn leerlingen hadden vergeten eten te kopen. Het enige wat zij bij zich hadden, was één brood.
15 Onderweg waarschuwde Hij hen: ‘Pas op voor de gist van Herodes en de Farizeeën!’ 16 Zij dachten dat Hij dit zei omdat zij geen brood bij zich hadden. 17 Jezus wist wel wat er in hen omging en zei: ‘Waarom maken jullie je zorgen over brood? Begrijpen jullie het dan niet? Heb je het nu nog niet door? 18 Jullie hebben nu al zoveel gezien en zoveel gehoord! Het lijkt wel of het jullie niets heeft gedaan. 19 Zijn jullie alweer vergeten wat er gebeurde toen Ik vijf broden uitdeelde aan die vijfduizend mensen? Hoeveel manden hadden jullie nodig om het overschot op te halen?’ ‘Twaalf,’ antwoordden zij. 20 ‘En toen Ik zeven broden aan die vierduizend mensen gaf? Hoeveel bleef er toen over?’ 21 ‘Zeven manden,’ was hun antwoord. Jezus zei: ‘Begrijpen jullie het nu nog niet?’
De genezing van een blinde man
22 Ze kwamen in Betsaïda. Enkele mensen brachten een blinde man bij Jezus en vroegen of Hij hem wilde aanraken. 23 Hij pakte de blinde man bij de hand en nam hem mee buiten het dorp. Hij spuugde hem in de ogen, legde zijn handen erop en vroeg: ‘Ziet u al iets?’ 24 De man keek om zich heen en zei: ‘Ja, ik zie de mensen lopen. Maar, wat raar, het lijken net bomen.’ 25 Jezus legde zijn handen nog eens op de ogen van de man. Hierna kon hij weer normaal zien. Hij was genezen en zag alles duidelijk. 26 Jezus stuurde hem naar huis en zei: ‘Ga het dorp niet in.’
27 Later gingen Jezus en zijn leerlingen naar de dorpen rondom de stad Caesarea Filippi. Onderweg vroeg Hij: ‘Wat zeggen de mensen eigenlijk van Mij? Wie ben Ik volgens hen?’ 28 ‘Sommigen zeggen dat U Johannes de Doper bent,’ antwoordden de leerlingen. ‘Anderen dat U Elia bent of een andere profeet.’ 29 ‘En jullie dan?’ vroeg Hij. ‘Wat denken jullie van Mij? Wie ben Ik?’ 30 Petrus antwoordde: ‘U bent de Christus.’ Jezus zei dat zij dit aan niemand mochten vertellen. 31 Hij begon hun te vertellen over de verschrikkelijke dingen die Hij, de Mensenzoon, zou moeten doormaken. Hij zei dat de verantwoordelijke oudsten, priesters en bijbelgeleerden Hem zouden veroordelen, dat men Hem zelfs zou doden en dat Hij na drie dagen weer levend zou worden. 32 Omdat Hij hier ronduit met hen over sprak, nam Petrus Hem apart. ‘Zulke dingen moet U niet meer zeggen,’ zei hij. 33 Jezus keerde Zich om. Met zijn gezicht naar de andere leerlingen vermaande Hij Petrus: ‘Satan, maak dat je wegkomt! Jij bekijkt de zaak van de menselijke kant en niet van Gods kant!’
34 Hij riep zijn leerlingen en de vele mensen die waren toegestroomd bij Zich en zei: ‘Wie bij Mij wil horen, moet zichzelf niet belangrijk vinden. Hij moet zijn kruis opnemen en Mij volgen. 35 Want wie zijn leven wil behouden, zal het verliezen. Maar wie zijn leven vanwege Mij en voor Gods plan verliest, zal het behouden. 36 Wat hebt u eraan de hele wereld te winnen en uw leven te verspelen? 37 Wat kan een mens geven in ruil voor zijn leven? 38 Wie zich in deze tijd van ontrouw en misdaad voor Mij en mijn woorden schaamt, voor hem zal Ik, de Mensenzoon, Mij ook schamen als Ik met de heilige engelen in de heerlijkheid van mijn Vader kom.’

And some of them have come from far away.” 4 And his disciples answered him, “How can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” 5 And he asked them, “How many loaves do you have?” They said, (C)“Seven.” 6 And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and (D)having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. 7 And they had a few small fish. And (E)having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. 8 And (F)they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, (G)seven baskets full. 9 And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away. 10 And immediately he got into (H)the boat with his disciples and went to the district of (I)Dalmanutha.[a]
The Pharisees Demand a Sign
11 (J)The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, (K)seeking from him (L)a sign from heaven (M)to test him. 12 And (N)he sighed deeply (O)in his spirit and said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 And (P)he left them, got into the boat again, and went to the other side.
The Leaven of the Pharisees and Herod
14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15 And he cautioned them, saying, “Watch out; (Q)beware of (R)the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of (S)Herod.”[b] 16 And they began discussing with one another the fact that they had no bread. 17 And (T)Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you have no bread? (U)Do you not yet perceive (V)or understand? (W)Are your hearts hardened? 18 (X)Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember? 19 When I broke (Y)the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They said to him, “Twelve.” 20 “And (Z)the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” And they said to him, “Seven.” 21 And he said to them, “Do you not yet understand?”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22 And they came (AA)to Bethsaida. And some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him. 23 And (AB)he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village, and when (AC)he had (AD)spit on his eyes and (AE)laid his hands on him, he asked him, “Do you see anything?” 24 And he looked up and said, “I see people, but they look like trees, walking.” 25 Then Jesus[c] laid his hands on his eyes again; and he opened his eyes, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. 26 And he sent him to his home, saying, (AF)“Do not even enter the village.”
