God’s Commandments, Man’s Traditions

(A)And the Pharisees and some of the scribes *gathered around Him when they had come (B)from Jerusalem, and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with (C)defiled hands, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they [a]carefully wash their hands, thus observing the (D)tradition of the elders; and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they [b]wash themselves; and there are many other things which they have received in order to observe, such as the washing of (E)cups and pitchers and copper pots.) And the Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the (F)tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with (G)defiled hands?” And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:

(H)This people honors Me with their lips,
But their heart is far away from Me.
(I)But in vain do they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commands of men.’

Leaving the commandment of God, you hold to the (J)tradition of men.”

And He was also saying to them, “You are good at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your (K)tradition. 10 For Moses said, ‘(L)Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘(M)He who speaks evil of father or mother, is to [c]be put to death’; 11 but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever you might benefit from me is (N)Corban (that is to say, [d]given to God),’ 12 you no longer leave him to do anything for his father or his mother; 13 thus invalidating the word of God by your (O)tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.”

The Heart of Man

14 And after He called the crowd to Him again, He began saying to them, “Listen to Me, all of you, and understand: 15 there is nothing outside the man which can defile him if it goes into him; but the things which proceed out of the man are what defile the man. 16 [e][And if anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”]

17 And when He had left the crowd and entered (P)the house, (Q)His disciples were asking Him about the parable. 18 And He *said to them, “Are you lacking understanding in this way as well? Do you not [f]perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside cannot defile him, 19 because it does not go into his heart, but into his stomach, and goes to the sewer?” (Thus He declared (R)all foods (S)clean.) 20 And He was saying, (T)That which proceeds out of the man, that is what defiles the man. 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed the evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, adulteries, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, [g](U)envy, slander, [h]pride, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things proceed from within and defile the man.”

A Gentile Woman’s Faith

24 (V)Now Jesus stood up and went away from there to the region of (W)Tyre[i]. And when He had entered a house, He was wanting no one to know of it; [j]yet He could not escape notice. 25 But after hearing of Him, a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit immediately came and fell at His feet. 26 Now the woman was a [k]Greek, of Syrophoenician descent. And she kept asking Him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And He was saying to her, “Let the children be satisfied first, for it is not [l]good to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 28 But she answered and *said to Him, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs under the table feed on the children’s crumbs.” 29 And He said to her, “Because of this [m]answer go; the demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And going back to her home, she found the child [n]lying on the bed, the demon having left.

The Deaf Hear, the Mute Speak

31 (X)And again He went out from the region of (Y)Tyre, and came through Sidon to (Z)the Sea of Galilee, within the region of the (AA)Decapolis. 32 And they *brought to Him one who was deaf and spoke with difficulty, and they *pleaded with Him to (AB)lay His hand on him. 33 (AC)And Jesus took him aside from the crowd, by himself, and put His fingers into his ears, and after (AD)spitting, He touched his tongue; 34 and looking up to heaven with a (AE)sigh, He *said to him, “Ephphatha!” that is, “Be opened!” 35 And his ears were opened, and the [o]impediment of his tongue [p]was removed, and he began speaking plainly. 36 And (AF)He gave them orders not to tell anyone; but the more He was ordering them, the more widely they (AG)continued to proclaim it. 37 And they were utterly astonished, saying, “He has done all things well; He makes even the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”

Chapter 7

Traditions That Falsify the Law of God.[a] When the Pharisees, along with some scribes who had come from Jerusalem, gathered around Jesus, they noted that some of his disciples were eating with defiled hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and in fact all Jews, do not eat without thoroughly washing their hands, thereby observing the tradition of the elders. And on coming from the marketplace they do not eat without first washing. In addition, there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and jugs and bronze kettles and tables.[b]

Therefore, the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not follow the tradition of the elders but eat with unclean hands?” He answered, “How rightly Isaiah prophesied about you hypocrites, as it is written:

‘This people honors me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me;
in vain do they worship me,
    teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’

You thrust aside the commandment of God in order to preserve the traditions of men.”[c]

Then he said to them, “How cleverly you have set aside the commandment of God to preserve your own tradition! 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and ‘Whoever curses father or mother will be put to death.’ 11 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: “Anything I might have used for your support is Corban” ’[d] (that is, dedicated to God), 12 then he is forbidden by you from that very moment to do anything for his father or mother. 13 You nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other things just like that.”

14 Clean and Unclean.[e] Then he called the people to him and said to them: “Listen to me, all of you, and understand. 15 There is nothing that goes into a person from outside that can defile him. The things that come out of a person are what defile him. [ 16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear!]”[f]

17 When he had gone into the house, away from the crowds, his disciples questioned him about the parable. 18 He said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not realize that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, 19 since it enters not into the heart but into the stomach and is discharged into the sewer?” Thus, he pronounced all foods clean.

20 Then he went on, “It is what comes out of a person that defiles. 21 For from within, from the human heart, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, 22 adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, arrogance, and folly. 23 All these evils come from within, and they defile a person.”

24 The Faith of a Gentile Woman.[g] He moved on from that place to the region of Tyre. He went into a house and did not want anyone to know he was there, but he was not able to avoid being recognized. 25 Almost immediately, a woman whose daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit heard about him and hastened to fall down at his feet. 26 The woman was a Gentile of Syrophoenician origin, and she begged him to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 Jesus said to her, “Let the children be fed first. For it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” 28 She replied, “Yes, Lord; but even the dogs under the table eat the scraps from the children.” 29 Then Jesus said to her, “For saying this, you may go. The demon has gone out of your daughter.” 30 And when she returned home, she found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

31 Jesus Heals a Deaf Man.[h] Returning from the region of Tyre, Jesus traveled by way of Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, and into the region of the Decapolis. 32 Thereupon people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 He took him aside, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue. 34 Then, looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha!” which means, “Be opened!” 35 At once, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened, and he spoke properly.

36 Then he ordered them not to tell anyone, but the more he ordered them not to do so, the more widely they proclaimed it. 37 Their astonishment was beyond measure. “He has done all things well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf able to hear and the mute able to speak.”

Mark 7:1 Jesus reproaches the teachers, who insist upon “traditions” that they themselves have sometimes invented, with a legalism that allows them to have a good conscience, even as they disregard the essential demands of the Law (Ex 20:12; 21:17; Lev 20:9; Isa 29:13). See also note on Mt 15:2ff.
  2. Mark 7:4 Moses had prescribed a few ablutions for priests when they prepared for service at the altar (Ex 30:17-21). However, Rabbinic tradition had gone beyond the spirit of this prescription and arbitrarily extended it. Jesus condemns this Pharisaic formalism and censures his opponents who out of love for their traditions had nullified the more important commandments of the Law. His disciples—like the great majority of the common people—paid little attention to these prescriptions of the Pharisees. And tables: found only in some early manucripts.
  3. Mark 7:8 The commandment of God . . . the traditions of men: Jesus makes a clear contrast between the two. The commandment of God is found in Scripture and is binding; the traditions of men (also known as the tradition of the elders: v. 3) are not found in Scripture and are not binding.
  4. Mark 7:11 Corban: an Aramaic word meaning “offered to God.”
  5. Mark 7:14 Jesus settles the question of clean and unclean foods that was erecting a barrier between Jews and pagans and was troubling Jews who had converted to Christianity (see Acts 10:11, 15; Rom 14:14-23; 1 Tim 4:3-4; Tit 1:15). See also note on Mt 15:10-20.
  6. Mark 7:16 This verse is lacking in some of the most ancient manuscripts; it was probably added here from Mk 4:9 or 4:23.

  8. Mark 7:31 The miracle of the deaf mute is omitted by the other evangelists. This man may also have been a pagan, for the population of the Decapolis was mostly pagan. The various gestures that Jesus performs on the man had the sole purpose of strengthening his faith. Mark might have recounted them in detail to foreshadow the future Christian Sacraments.

Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

17 And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

18 And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

19 Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20 And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

24 And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

26 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

27 But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

28 And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

29 And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

30 And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

33 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;

34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

35 And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

36 And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

37 And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

傳統與誡命

你們離棄了神的命令,而拘守人的傳統[i]。」 耶穌又對他們說:「你們為了要守住你們的傳統,竟然棄絕了神的命令! 10 摩西吩咐過

『你要孝敬你的父母』[j],又說
『咒罵父親或母親的人,必須處死。』[k]

11 你們卻說『如果一個人對父親或母親說:我本該給你的,已經做了「各爾板」——這意思是「聖殿奉獻」, 12 就准許這個人可以不再為父母做什麼了。』 13 這樣,你們就藉著所繼承的傳統,廢棄了神的話語[l]。你們還做很多類似這樣的事。」 14 耶穌又[m]召來眾人,對他們說:「你們每個人都當聽我說,也當領悟: 15 從人外面進到他裡面的,沒有一樣能使人[n]汙穢;相反,從人裡面出來的,才會使人汙穢。 16 凡是有耳可聽的,就應當聽![o]

17 耶穌離開人群,一進了房子,他的門徒們就問他這比喻的意思。 18 耶穌說:「你們也是這樣無知嗎?你們難道不明白一切從外面進到人裡面的,不能使人汙穢嗎? 19 因為這些東西不是進到人的心裡,而是進入肚子,然後排到廁所裡去。」耶穌這樣就使一切食物都潔淨。 20 他接著說:「從人裡面出來的,那才使人汙穢。 21 因為從裡面,就是從人心裡發出種種惡念:淫亂、偷竊、殺人、 22 通姦、貪心、惡意、欺詐、好色、嫉妒、毀謗、驕傲、愚妄, 23 這一切邪惡都是從人裡面出來的,而且使人汙穢。」

外邦婦人的信心

24 耶穌起身離開那地方到提爾西頓[p]地區。他進了一戶人家,本來不願意任何人知道,卻還是不能避開眾人。 25 有一個婦人,她的女兒有汙靈附著。這婦人一聽說耶穌的事,就趕來俯伏在他的腳前。 26 這婦人是希臘人,出生在敘利亞腓尼基。她請求耶穌把鬼魔從她女兒身上趕出去。 27 耶穌對她說:「應該先讓兒女吃飽,因為拿兒女的餅扔給小狗,是不合宜的。」

28 婦人回答說:「主啊[q]!連桌子底下的小狗,也吃得到孩子們的碎渣!」

29 耶穌對她說:「憑你這句話,你可以回去了。鬼魔已經離開了你的女兒。」 30 婦人回到家,發現孩子[r]躺在床上,鬼魔已經離去了。

耶穌做事都美好

31 耶穌離開提爾地區,經過西頓,從德卡波利斯境內又來到加利利湖邊[s] 32 有人把一個又聾又啞的人帶到耶穌面前,懇求耶穌按手在他身上。 33 耶穌把他從人群中單獨帶到一邊去,用指頭伸進他的耳朵,吐唾沫來抹他的舌頭, 34 然後望天噓了一口氣,對他說:「以法達[t]!」——這意思是「開了吧」。 35 他的耳朵立刻開了,舌結也解了,說話也清楚了。 36 耶穌吩咐他們不要告訴任何人。但是,他越是吩咐,他們越是大大傳揚。

37 人們極其驚訝,說:「他所做的一切都好!他甚至使聾子聽見,使啞巴說話。」

Les pharisiens et quelques scribes, venus de Jérusalem, s'assemblèrent auprès de Jésus.

Ils virent quelques-uns de ses disciples prendre leurs repas avec des mains impures, c'est-à-dire, non lavées.

Or, les pharisiens et tous les Juifs ne mangent pas sans s'être lavé soigneusement les mains, conformément à la tradition des anciens;

et, quand ils reviennent de la place publique, ils ne mangent qu'après s'être purifiés. Ils ont encore beaucoup d'autres observances traditionnelles, comme le lavage des coupes, des cruches et des vases d'airain.

Et les pharisiens et les scribes lui demandèrent: Pourquoi tes disciples ne suivent-ils pas la tradition des anciens, mais prennent-ils leurs repas avec des mains impures?

Jésus leur répondit: Hypocrites, Ésaïe a bien prophétisé sur vous, ainsi qu'il est écrit: Ce peuple m'honore des lèvres, Mais son coeur est éloigné de moi.

C'est en vain qu'ils m'honorent, En donnant des préceptes qui sont des commandements d'hommes.

Vous abandonnez le commandement de Dieu, et vous observez la tradition des hommes.

Il leur dit encore: Vous anéantissez fort bien le commandement de Dieu, pour garder votre tradition.

10 Car Moïse a dit: Honore ton père et ta mère; et: Celui qui maudira son père ou sa mère sera puni de mort.

11 Mais vous, vous dites: Si un homme dit à son père ou à sa mère: Ce dont j'aurais pu t'assister est corban, c'est-à-dire, une offrande à Dieu,

12 vous ne le laissez plus rien faire pour son père ou pour sa mère,

13 annulant ainsi la parole de Dieu par votre tradition, que vous avez établie. Et vous faites beaucoup d'autres choses semblables.

14 Ensuite, ayant de nouveau appelé la foule à lui, il lui dit: Écoutez-moi tous, et comprenez.

15 Il n'est hors de l'homme rien qui, entrant en lui, puisse le souiller; mais ce qui sort de l'homme, c'est ce qui le souille.

16 Si quelqu'un a des oreilles pour entendre, qu'il entende.

17 Lorsqu'il fut entré dans la maison, loin de la foule, ses disciples l'interrogèrent sur cette parabole.

18 Il leur dit: Vous aussi, êtes-vous donc sans intelligence? Ne comprenez-vous pas que rien de ce qui du dehors entre dans l'homme ne peut le souiller?

19 Car cela n'entre pas dans son coeur, mais dans son ventre, puis s'en va dans les lieux secrets, qui purifient tous les aliments.

20 Il dit encore: Ce qui sort de l'homme, c'est ce qui souille l'homme.

21 Car c'est du dedans, c'est du coeur des hommes, que sortent les mauvaises pensées, les adultères, les impudicités, les meurtres,

22 les vols, les cupidités, les méchancetés, la fraude, le dérèglement, le regard envieux, la calomnie, l'orgueil, la folie.

23 Toutes ces choses mauvaises sortent du dedans, et souillent l'homme.

24 Jésus, étant parti de là, s'en alla dans le territoire de Tyr et de Sidon. Il entra dans une maison, désirant que personne ne le sût; mais il ne put rester caché.

25 Car une femme, dont la fille était possédée d'un esprit impur, entendit parler de lui, et vint se jeter à ses pieds.

26 Cette femme était grecque, syro-phénicienne d'origine. Elle le pria de chasser le démon hors de sa fille. Jésus lui dit:

27 Laisse d'abord les enfants se rassasier; car il n'est pas bien de prendre le pain des enfants, et de le jeter aux petits chiens.

28 Oui, Seigneur, lui répondit-elle, mais les petits chiens, sous la table, mangent les miettes des enfants.

29 Alors il lui dit: à cause de cette parole, va, le démon est sorti de ta fille.

30 Et, quand elle rentra dans sa maison, elle trouva l'enfant couchée sur le lit, le démon étant sorti.

31 Jésus quitta le territoire de Tyr, et revint par Sidon vers la mer de Galilée, en traversant le pays de la Décapole.

32 On lui amena un sourd, qui avait de la difficulté à parler, et on le pria de lui imposer les mains.

33 Il le prit à part loin de la foule, lui mit les doigts dans les oreilles, et lui toucha la langue avec sa propre salive;

34 puis, levant les yeux au ciel, il soupira, et dit: Éphphatha, c'est-à-dire, ouvre-toi.

35 Aussitôt ses oreilles s'ouvrirent, sa langue se délia, et il parla très bien.

36 Jésus leur recommanda de n'en parler à personne; mais plus il le leur recommanda, plus ils le publièrent.

37 Ils étaient dans le plus grand étonnement, et disaient: Il fait tout à merveille; même il fait entendre les sourds, et parler les muets.
