No sooner had he stepped out of the boat than a man with an unclean spirit came up to him from the tombs.[a] The man had been living in the tombs, and no one could restrain him any longer, not even with chains. For he had frequently been bound with shackles and chains, but he had snapped the chains and smashed the shackles to pieces, and no one had sufficient strength to subdue him.

When Jesus got out of the boat,(A) a man with an impure spirit(B) came from the tombs to meet him. This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him.
