¹² For ^(A)the word of God is living and ^(B)active, ^(C)sharper than any ^(D)two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and ^(E)discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

12 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church.

Jesus and the Beloved Apostle

²⁰ Peter turned and saw ^(A)the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, ^(B)the one who also had leaned back against him during the supper and had said, “Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?” ²¹ When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” ²² Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain ^(C)until ^(D)I come, what is that to you? ^(E)You follow me!” ²³ So the saying spread abroad among ^(F)the brothers^[a] that this disciple was not to die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he was not to die, but, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you?”

²⁴ This is the disciple ^(G)who is bearing witness about these things, and who has written these things, and ^(H)we know ^(I)that his testimony is true.

²⁵ Now ^(J)there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that ^(K)the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

³³ And he took with him ^(A)Peter and James and John, and began ^(B)to be greatly distressed and troubled.

The Request of James and John

^35 (A)And James and John, ^(B)the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us ^(C)whatever we ask of you.”

The Transfiguration

^2 (A)And after six days Jesus took with him ^(B)Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was ^(C)transfigured before them,

³⁷ And he allowed no one to follow him except ^(A)Peter and James and ^(B)John the brother of James.
