But by the feast day he was wont to let go to them to them one of the men bound, whomever they asked.[a]

And there was one that was said Barabbas, that was bound with men of dissension, that had done manslaughter in sedition [that had done manslaying in dissension].

And when the people was gone up, he began to pray, as he evermore did to them. [And when the company had ascended, he began to pray, as he ever did to them.]

And Pilate answered to them, and said, Will ye that I let go to you the king of Jews?[b]

10 For he knew, that the high priests had taken him by envy. [Forsooth he knew that the highest priests had betaken him by envy.]

11 But the bishops stirred the people, that he should rather let go to them Barabbas.[c]

12 And again Pilate answered, and said to them, What then will ye that I shall do to the king of Jews?

13 And they again cried, Crucify him [Crucify him, that is, Put him on the cross].

14 But Pilate said to them, [Soothly] What evil hath he done? And they cried the more, Crucify him.

15 And Pilate, willing to make satisfaction to the people, let go to them Barabbas, and he betook to them Jesus, beaten with scourges[d], to be crucified.

At that feast it was Pilate’s custom to release to the people, at their pleasure, a prisoner – whomever they desired. And there was one named Barabbas, who lay bound with those who had made insurrection, and in the insurrection had committed murder. And the people called to Pilate and began to ask that he do as usual for them. Pilate answered them and said, Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? 10 For he knew that the high priests had delivered him out of envy. 11 But the high priests had moved the people to have Barabbas released to them instead.

12 And Pilate answered again and said to them, What will you have me do then with him whom you call the king of the Jews? 13 And they cried again, Crucify him! 14 Pilate said to them, What evil has he done? And they cried the more fervently, Crucify him!

15 And so Pilate, choosing to appease the people, released Barabbas to them, and delivered Jesus, when had scourged him, to be crucified.

Then there was one named Barabbas, which was bound with his fellows, that had made insurrection, who in the insurrection had committed murder.

And the people cried aloud, and began to desire that he would do as he had ever done unto them.

Then Pilate answered them, and said, Will ye that I let loose unto you the King of the Jews?

10 For he knew that the high Priests had delivered him of envy.

11 But the high Priests had moved the people to desire that he would rather deliver Barabbas unto them.

12 And Pilate answered, and said again unto them, What will ye then that I do with him, whom ye call the King of the Jews?

13 And they cried again, Crucify him.

14 Then Pilate said unto them, But what evil hath he done? And they cried the more fervently, Crucify him.

15 So Pilate willing to content the people, loosed them Barabbas, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, that he might be crucified.
