⁹ “What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.

²⁰ And Isaiah boldly says,

²¹ But concerning Israel he says,

The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means!^(C) I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham,^(D) from the tribe of Benjamin.^{(E) 2} God did not reject his people,^(F) whom he foreknew.^(G) Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: ³ “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”^[c]?^{(H) 4} And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”^{[d](I) 5} So too, at the present time there is a remnant^(J) chosen by grace.^{(K) 6} And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works;^(L) if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

⁷ What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain.^(M) The elect among them did, but the others were hardened,^{(N) 8} as it is written:

¹¹ Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all!^(S) Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles^(T) to make Israel envious.^{(U) 12} But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles,^(V) how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!

Israel’s Unbelief

³⁰ What then shall we say?^(A) That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;^{(B) 31} but the people of Israel, who pursued the law as the way of righteousness,^(C) have not attained their goal.^{(D) 32} Why not? Because they pursued it not by faith but as if it were by works. They stumbled over the stumbling stone.^{(E) 33} As it is written:

²⁷ But those enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and kill them in front of me.’”

⁴³ “Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from you^(A) and given to a people who will produce its fruit.

²³ They arranged to meet Paul on a certain day, and came in even larger numbers to the place where he was staying. He witnessed to them from morning till evening, explaining about the kingdom of God,^(A) and from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets^(B) he tried to persuade them about Jesus.^{(C) 24} Some were convinced by what he said, but others would not believe.^{(D) 25} They disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit spoke the truth to your ancestors when he said^(E) through Isaiah the prophet:

²⁸ “Therefore I want you to know that God’s salvation^(H) has been sent to the Gentiles,^(I) and they will listen!”

⁴⁶ Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.^(A) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.^{(B) 47} For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

⁴⁸ When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;^(E) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

¹⁵ So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? ¹⁶ He will come and kill those tenants^(A) and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

⁴¹ As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it^{(A) 42} and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. ⁴³ The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side.^{(B) 44} They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls.^(C) They will not leave one stone on another,^(D) because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming^(E) to you.”
