The Triumphal Entry

11 And when they came near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples 2 and said to them, “Go into the village before you, and right away as you[a] enter into it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.[b] 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say[c] ‘The Lord has need of it, and will send it here again at once.’” 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those who were standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 So they told them, just as Jesus had said, and they allowed them to take it.[d] 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, and he sat on it. 8 And many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread[e] leafy branches they[f] had cut from the fields. 9 And those who went ahead and those who were following were shouting,

“Hosanna!
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord![g]
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!
    Hosanna in the highest heaven!”[h]

11 And he went into Jerusalem to the temple, and after[i] looking around at everything, because[j] the hour was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

A Barren Fig Tree Cursed

12 And on the next day as[k] they were departing from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 And when he[l] saw from a distance a fig tree that had leaves, he went to see if perhaps he would find anything on it. And when he[m] came up to it he found nothing except leaves, because it was not the season for figs. 14 And he responded and[n] said to it, “Let no one eat fruit from you any more forever!”[o] And his disciples heard it.[p]

The Cleansing of the Temple

15 And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered into the temple courts[q] and[r] began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple courts,[s] and overturned the tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who were selling doves. 16 And he did not permit anyone to carry objects[t] through the temple courts.[u] 17 And he began to teach[v] and was saying to them, “Is it not written,

‘My house will be called a house of prayer
    for all the nations,’[w]

but you have made it a cave of robbers!” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it,[x] and began considering[y] how they could destroy him. For they were afraid of him because the whole crowd was astounded by his teaching. 19 And when evening came they went out of the city.

The Barren Fig Tree Withered

20 And as they[z] passed by early in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 And Peter remembered and[aa] said to him, “Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered!” 22 And Jesus answered and[ab] said to them, “Have faith in God! 23 Truly I say to you that whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea!’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will happen, it will be done for him. 24 For this reason I say to you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it,[ac] and it will be done for you. 25 And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him,[ad] so that your Father who is in heaven will also forgive you your sins.”[ae]

Jesus’ Authority Challenged

27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as[af] he was walking in the temple courts,[ag] the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came up to him 28 and said to him, “By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority that you do these things?” 29 So Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question. Answer me and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 The baptism of John—was it from heaven or from men? Answer me!” 31 And they began to discuss[ah] this[ai] with one another, saying, “What should we say?[aj] If we say ‘From heaven,’ he will say, ‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘From men’”—they were afraid of the crowd, because they all looked upon John as truly a prophet.[ak] 33 And they replied to Jesus saying, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

11 (A)Quando furono giunti vicino a *Gerusalemme, a Betfage e *Betania, presso il *monte degli Ulivi, Gesú mandò due dei suoi discepoli, 2 dicendo loro: «Andate nel villaggio che è di fronte a voi; appena entrati, troverete legato un puledro d'asino, sopra il quale non è montato ancora nessuno; scioglietelo e conducetelo qui da me. 3 Se qualcuno vi dice: “Perché fate questo?” rispondete: “Il Signore ne ha bisogno, e lo rimanderà subito qua”».

4 Essi andarono e trovarono un puledro legato a una porta, fuori, sulla strada, e lo sciolsero. 5 Alcuni tra quelli che erano lí presenti dissero loro: «Che fate? Perché sciogliete il puledro?» 6 Essi risposero come Gesú aveva detto. 12 (B)Il giorno seguente, quando furono usciti da Betania, egli ebbe fame. 13 Veduto di lontano un fico, che aveva delle foglie, andò a vedere se vi trovasse qualche cosa; ma, avvicinatosi al fico, non vi trovò niente altro che foglie; perché non era la stagione dei fichi. 14 Gesú, rivolgendosi al fico, gli disse: «Nessuno mangi mai piú frutto da te!» E i suoi discepoli udirono.

15 Vennero a Gerusalemme e Gesú, entrato nel tempio, si mise a scacciare coloro che vendevano e compravano nel tempio; rovesciò le tavole dei cambiavalute e le sedie dei venditori di colombi; 16 e non permetteva a nessuno di portare oggetti attraverso il tempio. 17 E insegnava, dicendo loro: «Non è scritto: “La mia casa sarà chiamata casa di preghiera per tutte le genti[b]?” Ma voi ne avete fatto un covo di ladroni[c]».

18 I capi dei *sacerdoti e gli *scribi udirono queste cose e cercavano il modo di farlo morire. Infatti avevano paura di lui, perché tutta la folla era piena d'ammirazione per il suo insegnamento.

19 Quando fu sera, uscirono dalla città.

La preghiera e la fede; il perdono

20 (C)La mattina, passando, videro il fico seccato fin dalle radici. 21 *Pietro, ricordatosi, gli disse: «Maestro, vedi, il fico che tu maledicesti è seccato». 22 Gesú rispose e disse loro: «Abbiate fede in Dio! 23 In verità io vi dico che chi dirà a questo monte: “Togliti di là e gettati nel mare”, se non dubita in cuor suo, ma crede che quel che dice avverrà, gli sarà fatto. 24 Perciò vi dico: tutte le cose che voi domanderete pregando, credete che le avete ricevute, e voi le otterrete. 25 Quando vi mettete a pregare, se avete qualcosa contro qualcuno, perdonate; affinché il Padre vostro, che è nei cieli vi perdoni le vostre colpe. [26 Ma se voi non perdonate, neppure il Padre vostro che è nei cieli perdonerà le vostre colpe.]»

Dubbio sull'autorità di Gesú

27 (D)Poi vennero di nuovo a Gerusalemme; mentre egli passeggiava nel tempio, i capi dei sacerdoti, gli scribi e gli *anziani si avvicinarono a lui e gli dissero: 28 «Con quale autorità fai queste cose? O chi ti ha dato l'autorità di fare queste cose?» 29 Gesú disse loro: «Io vi farò una domanda; rispondetemi e vi dirò con quale autorità io faccio queste cose. 30 Il battesimo di *Giovanni veniva dal cielo o dagli uomini? Rispondetemi». 31 Essi ragionavano cosí tra di loro: «Se diciamo: “dal cielo”, egli dirà: “Perché dunque non gli credeste?” 32 Diremo invece: “dagli uomini?”…» Essi temevano il popolo, perché tutti pensavano che Giovanni fosse veramente *profeta. 33 Risposero a Gesú: «Non lo sappiamo». Perciò Gesú disse loro: «Neppure io vi dico con quale autorità faccio queste cose».

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(A)(B)

11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(C) at the Mount of Olives,(D) Jesus sent two of his disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(E) Untie it and bring it here. 3 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

4 They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(F) As they untied it, 5 some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” 6 They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. 7 When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. 9 Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna![a]”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[b](G)

10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(H)

11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(I)

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(J)(K)(L)

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(M) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[c]?(N) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[d]”(O)

18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(P) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(Q)

19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[e] went out of the city.(R)

20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(S) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[f] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(T) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(U) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(V) [26] [g]

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(W)

27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”

29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”

31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(X)

33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

Christ rides into Jerusalem. The fig tree dries up. The buyers and sellers are cast out of the temple. The Pharisees question Christ.

11 And when they came near Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany beside the Mount of Olives, he sent forth two of his disciples 2 and said to them, Go your ways into the town that is in front of you. And as soon as you have entered into it, you will find a colt tied, on which no man ever sat. Untie him and bring him here. 3 And if anyone asks you why you are doing this, say that the Lord has need of him, and straightaway he will send him here.

4 And they went their way and found a colt tied by the door outside, in a place where two roads met, and they untied him. 5 And some of the people standing there said to them, What are you doing, untying the colt? 6 And they answered just as Jesus had instructed, and the people let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on it, and he sat upon it. 8 And many spread their garments in the way. Others cut down branches of the trees and strew them in the way. 9 And those who went before, and those who followed, cried out, saying, Hosanna! Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the kingdom that comes in the name of him who is Lord of our father David: Hosanna in the highest!

11 And the Lord entered into Jerusalem and into the temple. And when he had looked round about upon everything, and now that evening time was come, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

12 And on the morrow, when they had left Bethany, he hungered. 13 And afar off he spotted a fig tree in leaf, and went to see whether he might find anything on it. But when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for the time of figs was not yet. 14 And Jesus spoke and said to it, Never may man eat fruit from you hereafter while the world stands. And his disciples heard it.

15 And they came to Jerusalem. And Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out the sellers and buyers in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money changers, and the stools of those who sold doves, 16 and would not suffer anyone to carry a vessel through the temple. 17 And he taught, saying to them, Is it not written: My house shall be called the house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of thieves! 18 And the scribes and high priests heard this, and sought how to destroy him. For they feared him, because all the people marvelled at his doctrine.

19 And when evening came, he went out of the city. 20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered away.

22 And Jesus answered and said to them, Have confidence in God. 23 Truly I say to you that whoever says to this mountain, Take yourself away and cast yourself into the sea, and who does not waver in his heart, but believes that those things which he says will come to pass – whatever he says will be done for him. 24 Therefore I say to you, whatever you ask when you pray, believe that you will have it, and it will be done for you. 25 And when you stand and pray, forgive, if you have anything against any person, so that your Father who is in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.

27 And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he walked in the temple, there came to him the high priests and the scribes and the elders, 28 and they said to him, By what authority do you do these things? And who gave you this authority, to do these things? 29 Jesus answered and said to them, I will also ask of you a certain thing. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 The baptism of John: was it from heaven, or of men? Answer me.

31 They thought in themselves, saying, If we say from heaven, he will say, Why then did you not believe him? 32 But if we say of men, then we fear the people. (For everyone counted John to be a very prophet.) 33 And they answered and said to Jesus, We don’t know. And Jesus answered and said to them, Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
